I think this about the early to mid 1970's ? it was sad to read of how most of them lost out when they were exposed to western culture with all its luxury. I dont think they lost faith, but how deep was it before they left Russia?

*If your faith in God is strong read this and tell me why life as a atheist is meaningless* First of all, I think it is reasonable to assume our 5 main senses are as close to objective reality as one can get. With that being said, I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting there to be purpose or meaning to one's life. I do not think it is the best way to achieve meaning in your life though. I respect everyone's opinion to believe what they choose provided they do not dismiss observable evidence. I may not agree with the reasons behind that choice, but I recognize your right to have it. I found that once I let go of my religious beliefs around the age of 12 I began to feel much more appreciative for the time I am given on this earth. It is no less inspiring to understand that we are sentient beings made of stardust. The unfathomable amount of time, and numerous monumental events that are responsible for us being here are not meaningless. It is that _eureka_ moment that is worth seeing reality through the eyes of reason, rather than faith. In my subjective opinion of course. I often find myself thinking about the beauty of our existence when I look through my telescope at many of the deep sky spectacles. How magnificent it is that we are able to construct complex thoughts to have this discussion, create art, and understand the world around us. To me, this is my purpose. I am here to exist and observe. To love and laugh. To give back to the earth by showing my appreciation. Caring for others as well as other creatures. To share ideas and search for enlightenment. Enlightenment meaning having a sense of understanding and awareness.
@@Rage-GB being a part of the universe does leave me with a sense of awe, but I wouldn't describe it as containing an eternal afterlife. Although the universe itself may be eternal. The fact that I get to experience something that would commonly be described as mundane is incredible to me. I do not take life for granted. It always amazes me how believer think that atheism is similar to nihilism. They are two very different things. You can be an atheist and still find meaning in your life. I reject the idea of God unless someone can provide me evidence to warrant belief in one. Our human form is complex and one does not need to invoke a God to explain it. However if you do, what makes that objectively better? How can you claim that you live a more meaningful life than someone without that belief?
@@Rage-GB the fact that you have found purpose in something is testament to how a process that began random can create a sense of meaning. The only difference is you reject that evidence and subscribe to the idea of a God to get your purpose. Evolution is only partly random as well. The mutation is random, but the adaptation is guided by our environment.
@@Rage-GB there are plenty of detrimental or "negative" mutations. It is not always necessarily so detrimental that you will not survive long enough to reproduce and pass on your Genes. For example there are many humans even today that have genes that will cause them to develop cancer. This is detrimental, but if they can reproduce before those genes cause their death they can still have some of their genes pass on. Life has been on earth for *billions* of years. That is an incredibly long amount of time. It takes you until you're about 30 years old to have lived one billion seconds. Think about that for a minute and you can easily understand how long life has had to adapt. Good mutations will always help you to adapt and survive but bad will not. So it may have taken an incredibly long amount of time but it is easy to understand how that build up would result in what we see today. Without evolution explain why God would do this. The laryngeal nerve begins in the brain and its endpoint is the larynx, though it does not go straight from point A to point B, as any decent engineer would have ensured. Instead, the nerve bypasses point A, goes down into the thorax, wraps around the right subclavian artery, then completes its journey back up into the larynx. This can be understood only through evolution. In fish-like ancestors, there would have been no such detour. The nerve would travel directly from the brain, past the heart, and to the gills as it does with most modern-day fish. However, since the neck began elongating and the heart began lowering into the chest, the nerve became caught on the wrong side of the heart. As the nerve stretched, natural selection gradually lengthened it in tiny increments, leaving it in the circuitous route we now see. As Richard Dawkins put it, “evolution cannot go back to the drawing board. Evolution has no foresight.”
@@Rage-GB I urge you to look into evolution with an open mind. If God is really the answer you should find no contradictions. If God is real either he created the world to appear as though evolution is real( why would he trick us) or evolution is a real phenomena and he created us through evolution and the scripture is wrong. One is incorrect but which one?

I know it seems easy to suggest I read the scripture and just accept it but I have read much of it and I still have very firm doubts. I know you will suggest we have freewill but I also do not see how that is possible. If God knew everything that was going to happen before it ever happened then wouldn't he know how each of us would act or think? If that is the case then he created Atheists knowing they would never be a to believe in him and therefore he damned them to eternal damnation long before they ever existed. I can't agree with that form of thinking. Nevertheless, best wishes to you and I hope you get the urge one day to look into evolution. Certainly god does not send someone to hell for questioning, right. You can repent for anything.
