OMG Rob, now I know why your son helped out. You have to have the fingers of a toddler to get to those lighter wirers. Love your videos I have the same Taco, standard also.
I want to add another USB data port in the center console of a 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR5. There is one on the dash from the factory but I wanted to add another USB data port. Can this be done?
YOU MISSED SOMETHING ROB, on the 2020 tacomas Toyota also removed the Aux port, if you see between your rear window button and your wireless charging bottom , there is only a USB port, in my 2019 for example I have a USB port AND an aux pot in the same slot.
Super confusing. Not too familiar with taps or what you used or connected it to. Not sure what both of the plugs on the usb harness attach to either. I’ve got everything hanging out of the truck and unplugged and I’m clueless haha
It went to a back up battery under the seat then back through the front to the driver fuse panel. You can see the install video here ua-cam.com/video/qRZmEozZA-4/v-deo.html
I wanted to but it was impossible to get a good shot of the cig adapter wiring. There's only 2 and 1 is black. The other option to tap into the fuse block will vary per individuals preference. Thanks for the suggestion
Hey rob. I noticed you’ve put so much different electrical stuff on your truck. Light bars, ditch pods. Are they all connected to your main battery? Do you have one one battery or have you doubled up on it? Do you have a second battery you hook up only your electronics to? If yes do you have a video on it
I have a single Odyssey battery. LEDs are very efficient so electrical load isn't too bad. I didn't do a video about it but it could be a topic I may touch about. dual battery systems get pricey but do have benefits.
I think with trucks now and day and having so many options and customizations it be a good topic to talk about. I was thinking of running a second battery in the future so I wouldn’t burn out my main one
Get a add a fuse like this (verify fuse type) amzn.to/2UCfH4p Then look for a switched circuit in your fuse box like ignition, radio or accessory. You can also tap your cigarette lighter plug which is what I did.
Rob great video. How do I identify the cigarette lighter wires and how do they tap into the supplied wiring on the Qualcomm unit. I'm going to use the t taps
@@RobDaman My AC panel popped out pretty easy and I only had to disconnect three plugs. Once that was out it was much easier to access the lighter wires. The positive was a single cord that was purple and white. I know it's five months since you posted but just in case anyone else is attempting this change.
@@bobbyburtonphotography did you tap into both the power and the ground? What gauge clamp did you need to use? I just got mine today and looking for tips. Thanks!
@@Natron413 I ran two wires, one to the positive and one to the negative. I forget the gauge size but it was small because the wires to the lighter were small. I'm considering redoing it though.
@@Natron413 I think the second time around I will probably add a piece of thicker wire to the smaller, and then use a butt connector, crimp, and heat shrink
Hey Rob , thanks for the vids! I'm hoping you can answer a question. I have added a USB port to the center console of my 07 FJ. I used a add-a-fuse to one of the "continuous power" extra fuse slots and ran the ground to the same spot the battery is grounded to. Everything seemed to work without any issues. However my key fob now will only unlock and lock the FJ if I am10 feet or closer to the FJ. I tried moving the add-a-fuse to the other "continuous power" slots and have the same results. When I disconnect the add-a-fuse the fob works across a parking lot. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks for taking the time!
ya. it's good for my qi samsung buds. if you're not streaming music or talking on the phone much the QI should suffice but I'm more of a power user (not while driving) so I like my battery charged faster. thanks for watching.
I just bought one for my 2015 Tacoma. It arrives tomorrow so I have not installed it yet. I was wondering if the LEDs are annoyingly bright at night. I have some black plastic port protectors I can plug in when I am not using the USB ports to block the light, but was hoping it would not be too bright at night. Thanks.
Hi, I didn't think they were too bright but they are bright. I have the usb plugged in most of the time so it's no bother to me. let me know how it works for you.
@@RobDaman I just received it and hooked it up to a 12v supply and turned out the lights. It is brighter than I would like, but not obnoxious. I have some black plastic USB port protectors and I will drill a 1/32 hole in the center of the protectors so it will let little light through so I can see them. These ports charge very nicely and I am happy with the performance. Thanks again for the video.

But if you do that you can not use car play and fast charger same time
Can I put this in the place of my Qi button on my auto? I could really use faster charging for the iPad.
yes. any of those slots you can replace. also mesocustoms sells a piece that adds even more openings.
Hey I was checking out your camera up there on the mirror. Where are you running the power cable to?

@@RobDaman Thanks. I actually found a thing that you can plug into the back of the mirror that allows you to use a USB. So I ended up buying that.

Use switched power like a windshield wiper fuse location. Continuous power shouldn't be tapped due potential battery drain.

Is it easy to find the cigarette lighter wire in order to tap into it? What color is it?
Red if I recall. Easy to find, hard to reach with bigger hands
How many watts is this usb port giving? I have a note 10 plus and i need at least 10w, preferably 25w
Top port is 2.5 amps at 5volts so that's over 10 watts. Powers and charges my s10+ no problem.
Has the fuse blown? I was wondering if I should just do add-a-fuse.
never blew the fuse. you can do the add a fuse for extra insurance. no harm doing that way.
Do you know the amps of the fuse? Thanks for the reply.
not off hand but a 5 or 10 should be fine. it's more to protect the wire from any shorts than anything else.
