Cicero was too sassy for one video

- It turns out my video on Cicero just wasn’t enough to capture the full scope of the man’s pettiness. The guy was known for some pretty banger quips and comebacks, a senator once insulted his background as a commoner by asking “Who is your father?” Cicer answered and clapped back “As for you sir, your mother has made that quite hard to determine”. He made 14 speeches sh*t-talking Mark Antony, although there was some justification there, but what really takes the cake: Cicero wrote an epic poem with the scope of the Odyssey or the Illiad… about himself. Everyone told him he was full of hot air… and so he wrote a second one!

The Roman republic was always run by egomaniacs it’s what makes it so fun to read about. The art of clapping back was something they refined to perfection.
I Feel like every country is run by egomaniacs.
@@SOL_INVICTVS_123 true, but every Roman basically had the subtly and manners of Donald Trump. Case in point, your mom jokes.
So nothing's changed in two millennia and change. Checks out.
May I have a few recommendations? Maybe a depository of all roman works?
They were literally black women
Cicero, Dante, and Napoleon. The writing fan fiction about yourself trifecta
Wait what? Napoleon wrote something?
@@Kuudere-Kun I must know of this.
@@Kuudere-Kun Before he got his command Napoleon wrote a bunch of self insert fan fiction. In one he punishes his unfaithful ex fiancé by dying on the front line.
In another, Le souper de Beaucaire, A soldier who totes isn’t Napoleon meets with a group of counter revolutionaries and convinces them they are wrong and dumb and then everybody claps. It’s apparently based on a real thing that happened but since it’s Napoleon, the master of self publishing, we have no way of knowing if it’s true.
Only one of those three's work is considered a masterpiece of humanity.
@@nowhereman6019 Dante's Comedy is truly the best self-insert fanfiction ever written.
Cicero wasn't too sassy for one video, he was too sassy for two books.
Today, the line about 'your mother' might be considered unparliamentary language.
Which is quite a shame.
If it's good enough for Shakespeare and Cicero, it' more than good enough for modern politicians.
The good 'ol days
Could definitely do without some of these language limitations lol
Nope.
It's a shame Cicero's epic about himself (IIRC it was called "de suis temporibus") has not survived. Apparently it wasn't very popular so not many people made copies. But the bits we can gleam from his letters where he asks his friend Atticus for feedback make it sound hilariously self-congratulatory. There's one letter where Cicero writes to Atticus something along the lines of "What was your favorite part of my book? Personally I really liked the part where ALL THE GODS DESCEND FROM THE HEAVENS AND DECLARE ME TO BE THE WISEST AND MOST JUST ROMAN WHO HAS EVER LIVED"
Which letter was that? I'm dying to know!
I like to imagine in a Cicero version of the Odyssey it's the Roman senate putting wax in their ears not to block out the calls of the Sirens... But to block out the 2 hour long speech Cicero wrote in honor of himself...
As petty as he was I love all the stories cicero left behind. When other people in power got angry, the solution was to start a civil war. When cicero was angry he would release some banger poetry that grills whoever he is mad at.
He was just Hamilton without the military background. 😂
And yet this man also wrote a bunch of essays on the nature of friendship! Cicero really was a fantastic writer, and he’s honestly just a hysterical historical character.
I would love a TV series sit com that is just the Roman senate debating various topics.
I would love to make that TV series
Someday...
Better Call Cecero
Man, I really wished he joined the Triumvirate, Caesar offered him twice, imagine that
"Why be one-in-three when you can just be me?"
@@Borderose cant believe im laughing at a joke about cicero im such a nerd 💀
He was too good for them.
Cicero was known for some very witty and true statements.
"The more laws, the less justice."
"So he wrote a sequel"💀💀💀
happy to see this hella early but fr jack rackam i just wanna say you are seriously dope and underappreciated, youre fire and i hope youre happy and doing good. Also you took the name of my rl favorite pirate so good choice. take care and know you are appreciated
Holy narcissism, Batman
Though you have to respect the "No sir, Fuck You." energy.
_This_ is the kind of personality it takes to truly excel in politics.
It is amazing how many books that Cicero wrote have survived time.
Seems I have a new goal in life
Cicero literally invented the “your mother” joke😂
the fact that your mom jokes and quips are very heavily present in accounts of ancient history will always be amazing to me
HE DID A YO MAMA JOKE
when he was to be executed he said something to the effect of "nothing you are doing is properly *sticks out neck* but at least do this properly"
I've been waiting for this sequel!! Should I expect a trilogy??
(Lol I need to learn from Cicero. Man is too petty I love it)
Sadly he was killed before being able to write it
I'd love to see Diogenes debate with Cicero
Diogenes would bring Cicero to his knees, shamelessly exposing the utter pettiness Cicero embodied.
"Cicero is stuck!"
Does this mean Cicero told the world’s first “yo mama” joke?
Technically yes. There are some older jokes but they are incomplete fragments.
The sheer animosity Cicero had for authority and still giving the respect deserved describes one of the many traits of the citizens of Cicero, IL. I should know for I am one.
Cicero is one of those irl Bugs Bunny types that it is a miracle he survived as long as he did.
The dude saved the republic TWICE and still found the time to write a self agrandizing epic AND found the philisophical concept of Natural Law. what a chad
I get that he was egotistical, but he was a really interesting guy. Thank you for making the video and this short about.
the man has got heads for days
That's not petty. That's just roasting someone
Roman: man you talk to much schitt!
Cicero: bet-
He’s sounds flamboyant
Cicero made a 2,000 year old your mom joke
Cicero? More like SASSero
14 speeches!!!???
Poor Mark Anthony, he just wanted to sing salsa, Latin music and dance… As if breaking up with J Lo wasn't enough in his life…
Don’t forget that he was in the Dark Brotherhood, a league/family of assassins
God Cicero is amazing. My favorite.
Ancient petty people are so funny
Characters like Cicero is why late republic is soooo much more interesting than Empire Rome
I would love to see an alt reality where politics were competitive again beginnin with Augustus, instead of being dominated by just 1 man.
Crassus' grandson apparently got a Spoilia Opima, one of the rarest honors in Roman history. Even the last triumph outside of the imperial family!!
Marcus Furius Camillus (consul during Augustus' era) would've made a very interesting comeback to one of the must illustrious names in Roman history.
hell, cicero minor even banned Anthony from ever being named Marcus again. What happened to that!?
do NOT apologize for making multiple videos about the same topics
The worlds first yo mama joke
I bought a book on the works of Cicero so I hope to find some more witty comments in there. Jack would you consider doing a video on Charles the bad of Navarre?
I've never heard of him. I should really do my research on the history of Navarre.
As far as epithets go, "the bad" sounds quite damning, I'm not gonna lie.
I remember reading somewhere about a king of Portugal whose aunt was a countess or duchess somewhere in Provence. The lady coined for him the nickname "the useless" and led some sort of revolution to depose him in lieu of her other nephew, for what I recall.
@@edisonlima4647 while I am aware of what it really means, and some people that did get that nickname were really amazing, I can't stop myself from finding "the lame" funny
@@DarkLordOfSweden are you saying the Timur could have been given the epithet “Timur the Reddit mod”?
Every time I hear the word Cicero I think of the musical Chicago lol
"Your poetry shows you are so full of yourself!"
Cicero: So you read it.
Jesus! He’s like the Roman version of Lord Byron!
I love Cicero so much. I named my cat after him.
I love me some Cicero !
Damn. Cicero is one diss tracker
“Hello the Cicero, looks like there are slow.”
ayo he absolutely murdered that senator
Illuminating and vastly interesting, thank you.
MY BOY!!!!!!
Reminds me of that scene from HBO's Rome where the Senate clerk reads one of Cicero's Philippicae to Mark Antony. Cicero calls Antony a "drink-sodden, sex-addled wreck" and "Rome's Helen of Troy."
cicero was truly a Chad
There’s this Cicero version of the Drake meme where Cicero rebukes Catiline not by highlighting his disloyalty to the republican system, but by calling him a *homosexual.* I go to sleep every night praying that I find it again
I really dig this dude lol.
Aw sh!t man. Cicero CHILL!
I wonder if he regretted pissing off antony so much…
The elder scrolls: jokes
I Cato Sicarius---cough*cough*cough* I mean Cicero...😂😂😂
His soft, pink hands nailed to the Senate doors
I miss that series
Best roman politician
That last quip made me laugh hard.
Cicero fryman? Gordon frimen?
Guessing this is the inspiration for Cicero in Skyrim
This dude made a yo mama joke in BC
The original Chad! 🗿
I think I saw that guy in Skyrim...
dude. dude cmon. you cant fucking say that cicero made a damn self-insert epic poem and not. at least summarize it for us.
I guess you could say that's what my first video about him was, since it's all about his life
@@JackRackam awwww maaaaaan i was really hoping for some absolutely aristotle tier impossible baron munchausen bullshit :(
of course ciceros lame enough to write self insert about shit that actually sorta happened. I dont know why i expected anything more fun.
Dude literally just yo mama that senator
The C in Latin is pronounced is pronounced like a K. I’m not joking, look it up.
I wonder if this is where they got the character inspiration for skyrim's Cicero in the dark brotherhood
Cicero was Ron Paul but with a much larger ego and more eagerness to straight up Ad Hominem his opponents into submission.
In short, the USA needs a Cicero.
Absolutely based
Wow cicero looked a lot like andrei fursov
It's really upsetting to see how much time and effort you put into these videos because you should have like 10 mil subscribers
What about the night mother??? Where was she???
But Cicero was still a great senator
Politics is theatrics
cicero literally told a senator that he was doing his mom and i’m not sure how to feel about that
Im sorry, I know it doesn't matter and we have literally all been pronouncing it wrong forever now. But in the actual latin Cicero would be pronounced Kikero, since C didnt have an S sound like it does in modern english.
Makes sense
Sounds vaguely familiar but I don't know why. Anyways I'm off to build a statue of myself.
🅱️ig chickpea
Guy sounds pretty fucking based
Did he put his name in huge letters on the side's of buildings?
It's not pronounced Cicero, it's pronounced Kikero.
You could really do a video on Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the man who led Turkey to be the only central power to successfully fight for better terms.
Hot take, Cicero did not whit talk Mark Antony enough
Better call cecero
kickero btw
Based
I am GoD
Still hate the guy. I am a huge caesaran and marc antony fan. Cicero like many others at the time was a mad lad.
Pronounced "KEE kair oh" not "siss-arrow" in Roman Latin of the period
I wonder if his history is actually true or if someone decided to invent it along the way like has been done with some others.
do a video on Severus from Majorca. or Caitline conspiracy
