- I finally got my hands on the We R Memory Keepers Foil Quill and got to unbox it as well as see how easy it is to use. I feel like this might be one of the most controversial products I have unboxed and used. I am including the disclaimers from both Cricut and from We R Memory Keepers below. Watch as I unbox the Foil Quill and use it in my Cricut Air 2 machine to see if it is a product I recommend or if you need to steer clear of it.
Statement from We R Memory Keepers:
Will using the Foil Quill™with my cutting machine void its warranty? Unless your machine was purchased within the last year, it may already be out ofwarranty. If your machine is still under the manufacturer’s warranty and is somehow damaged by the Foil Quill after being used in accordance with its instruction manual, simply email our customer service team atacinfo@americancrafts.com for resolution.
Statement from Cricut:
Dear Cricut Retail Partners,
It has come to our attention that a new product named the Foil Quill™ has been introduced to the Craft/DIY market by the We R Memory Keepers brand. It appears the device is intended to be used with electronic cutting machines - including the Cricut® family of cutting machines. The device inserts (as it relates to Cricut machines) into the Alternative Tool Housing with a cord plugged into the Cricut’s USB port. The resulting electrical current heats the tip of the Foil Quill which then moves over a foil sheet adhering the foil to an underlayment - such as paper.
While Cricut embraces innovation and creativity, we want to take this opportunity to clarify some confusion that has arisen regarding this product. The Foil Quill device is not produced, endorsed by, or affiliated with Cricut in any way, yet the Cricut Maker® machine is prominently featured on the Foil Quill packaging, such that it could cause consumer confusion as to the source of the product. The prominent use of the Cricut Maker on the product packaging is not authorized by Cricut.
Unlike other third-party accessory products which essentially attempt to perform the same - or similar -function to a Cricut product, the Foil Quill employs the electronic cutter to apply heat. This represents an unknown “use case” for the Cricut machine using voltage and heat. When Cricut introduces a product or accessory (e.g. Knife Blade) it is subjected to thousands of hours of quality testing across hundreds of machines, which are then scrutinized for variances by qualified engineers. The use case presented by the Foil Quill has not been tested or qualified in any way under Cricut’s quality assurance rigor. It draws voltage from the machine and places heat on, or near, the tool carriage and floor in a fashion that is beyond the current intended use of the Cricut machine. We cannot speak to the safety or effectiveness of the product, or its impact on the function of the Cricut machine.Because the Foil Quill is outside the current intended use of a Cricut machine, using it in connection with a Cricut will, of necessity, void the consumer’s Cricut machine warranty. We encourage retailers to be transparent with consumers with respect to the warranty implications of using the Foil Quill, and allow her to make an informed decision.

Thanks for this review you were awesome I got mine on HSN for $59 but have yet to try it. I do hear it work well with other heat set foils so I’ll give that a go as I have plenty. This video made me want to go open mine this instant and crafts. Lol your super awesome and it’s rare to find men crafting and sharing so I appreciate that. Pretty cool tool. I always thought of quilling as like paper quilling into objects. Learn something new everyday. Crafting is an amazing thing. Thanks Ian for sharing how the tool works. Have fun incorporating it into your future projects!
Quilling is the use of paper strips to make shapes. However it’s called the Foil Quill because it’s like a writing quill. Glad you liked my video and it taught you something new.

Well thank you for your video. I did use my foil quill today 1st time . I used with my cricut maker . I did plug into usb port it is used for other electronics like phone so I figured why not . My foiling came out beautiful . The last was a motorcycle from design space 4x6 size. It was silver on black wish I could show you . I may not use the port again , but it worked fine . Thank you again. I liked seeing the output sizes of the tips.

Great video, thanks. I just tried my new Foil Quill as well and love it. FYI: I used a baby wipe to clean my mat and the foil came right off. Looking forward to seeing how it does with the other materials.

I just got mine on Thursday from HSN, 5 days early actually. Can I tell you ... I love it!! I was skeptical if it would work or not but it does. This is definitely a winner and a tool for every crafter to have in their crafting arsenal.

Ian, I found the foil quill on a site called Swing design for $79.99 plus a 10% off coupon on their site which takes off another $7.99 and it was free ship and you can go thru a bank called Affirm from the swing site and make 3 monthly payments...interest free , thats the route I took... The quill is not in stock but the order date is sometime in April and my first payment isnt due til April 23rd...so i figure thats great!!

Ian I really enjoyed watching this....and now you've got me excited about it. Maybe Memory Keepers might give you a code for a discount. You did a really clean cut demo of doing your foil. Ian when stretching canvas or paper it's best to start at the center a tack all around the centers then slowly work your way around the left side of the first tack...then all the way around a tack on the right sides of the original tack..keep going around till your all the way finished. It makes for a smoother stretch and more flat. Good luck and I love this video...you look really good Ian ...really strong and handsome. ha ha ha ha ha from this senior.....pat

Wow - this is the first time I've seen you and I'm very impressed with your review technique. Not overly long, I don't have to watch you repeat yourself (we saw you put one pen in, we didn't need to see you change it each time), you covered all of the major points - especially the warranty issue. I would love to see a followup review of the different materials. Do you know if this would work on an old Cricut Expression? I don't want to violate my Maker warranty. I didn't plug it into my Silhouette, I used an external battery source. It worked fabulously. I did the same thing with my mat so I will just use that one for foiling. Great review.

Great review Ian! I got mine too and used it on acetate. It did a great job. I do highly suggest using the biggest tip on acetate. From what I can tell it's only the excess that wipes off.
Great tip! When I get around to acetate I’ll keep that in mind. I think you are right and it’s the excess that’s coming off. I didn’t notice any discrepancy in the line itself.

Great review! I think it’s your choice at the time of a particular project. Seems their trying to compete with hand fouling yet light hot machine foiling. But it won’t really replace other ways of foiling. Good product though.

The foil from Spellbinders (Glimmer Hot Foil System), Foil from WeRMemory keepers Heat wave and the foil from the Gemini Foil system all work as well. I have tested all 3.

Hi, I enjoyed your demonstration. I wanted to ask you if the little heat protector was hot when you removed it, and whether the heat tips were hot. Did you allow them time to cool before removing them, in particular the first two as you were replacing them with the next tip. Of course, it’s a lot more in Australian dollars! Oh well, maybe Cricut and the other manufacturers might like to consider making their own products!
The heat protector was not hot at all. It really is there just to be 100% sure if you pushed it down by accident that it won’t damage your machine. The tips were warm as I took them out and I did let them cool a few moments before changing them out.
Thanks for the quality and real review! All the ones I had found seemed so paid for. One question if you feel like giving it a try. How well does the foil stay on if you try to color after foiling? I thought it might be nice to be able to add some color to foiled items after applying the foil. I know with the minc foil it stays on perfectly with markers and colored pencils but I am curios about this foil since it seems to have a lot of other applications that would be nice to try.

Thanks for reviewing this item. I would like to get it but I agree $100 is a bit high. Sadly Joann doesn't allow coupons on it, they classify it a papercrafting machine which means no coupons.
You are right, the coupon was working yesterday, but doesn’t work today. I was very surprised it even worked from the start.

Great review. I had a problem with it cutting through the foil and the card stock. I read everything that came with it and saw no reference to this issue. Thoughts?
I noticed the thicker the card stock the more it has an issue. That might be the issue.

I suggest that you use a dedicated mat for the foil. I also suggest that you look for the We R Memory Keepers hand held foil applicator. It runs around $30. then save your scraps for doing by hand to eliminate waste. Joann's will not allow coupons on this product, I was able to get all 20 colors of foil as well as all the usb sticks at 40% off because the We r memory keepers products were on sale, but the foil quill stuff wasn't out yet, they got it out of the back room for me not thinking that it was on sale and then had to give me the sale price,
I’ve heard that if you use a baby wipe it removes the foil from the mat.
HSN had it on as their today's special on their 24 hour craft day March 5th. They had it for $59.99 on four flex pays of only $15. Unfortunately, they sold out the same day. I bought 2 of them (I have 2 Cricuts) but I'm wondering if I should put one up for sale on Ebay... Hmmm
That sounds like a good deal.
This is the ONLY time I’ve seen it cut without pulling up and wrinkling the foil. It ideally needs to be paused before cutting and the foil removed. Thermoweb doesn’t work but maybe the new foiled sold for the glimmer plate and crafters comp version will work?
It has to be heat activated.
What size tip did you use for the HELLO?
That was the medium tip.
ian, what is the name of the box thing u plugged the quill into including where u bought it...and anything else about it that would be useful I would need to know...I have nothing to plug the quill into, since I dont have your little box what else can I use???
Any power bank you would use to charge your phone will work. As long as it has a USB port on it, it should work. I always buy mine off Amazon.

I believe you can because it includes an adapter for a Brother machine. So I believe it will work.
Has anyone tried it with the Heatwave foil from WRMK? This looks like the same technology just designed to be used in the pen holder of a cutting machine.

Thank you for showing the mistake of foil being too large for card stock, so it left residue on mat. What font did you use or was it something in Cricut Access, or what? Foil Quill has a bunch of colors, there are multi color small packages & rolls of each color I think there are at least 8 colors. Check out HSN for great price I got it for almost 1/2 price. They have several USB drives with great assortment of words and icons.
I can’t remember what font it was. It was in Cricut Design Space.
For what it's worth, I plugged my quill into my Maker USB port and it melted the quill shield. I smelled it and unplugged it before it damaged anything else. After Memory Keepers gave me a replacement, I went out and got a USB port tester and found that my laptop is 5V output from the USB ports. The Maker is 17.98V!!!!!!! I am waiting to hear back from Cricut if this is normal or an anomaly, but I'd take care with plugging it into the Maker USB port.
I’m glad I didn’t do that! I think the portable power charger is the way to go.

How can you tell the difference between the different sizes it looks the same to me
In person you can see a difference in the line thickness. When looking at the quills the tips are different sizes.
Cannot use coupon at our Joann's, I bought today! Joann's had many colors of foil. Joann's met AC Moore's price of $79.

Hello There!.. I would like your help in regards to a Cricut Expression 2 please !.. I bought it a few years ago but never opened the box until recently, only to find out it doesn't or change from the 'Welcome'' screen!. I tried EVERYTHING I could someone told me about 'firmware' I never heard of it or where to buy it OR if it would be worth the $$. Please give any/all advise so that my $300. Hey Marie! I am so sorry to hear about your issues with your Cricut Expression 2. Sadly I am not familiar with the Cricut Expression 2. As much as I would love to help you out I just have no knowledge of its system or what will help you with this issue. My best suggestion would be to call Cricut Customer service and see if they are able to help you out. I hope you can get your issue resolved, good luck!
Totally agree! Call a Cricut. They are extremely helpful, just be mindful of their location a time differences. I have an Expression 2 as well.Will this quill system work with that machine?
Sadly, I don’t believe that it will.
They have more colors of foil on HSN. I got mine for $59.99 on HSN.

I pushed on my Cricut pen adapter and cannot get it out scares me. it's really hard :(
Trust me, I felt like mine was going to break too. It won’t. You just have to push really hard from the bottom.

I have tons of Thermo Web foil and would love a review on it.
I’ve got to dig out my tubes of it and I’ll give it a go for you.
It doesn't work with Deco foil, doesn't with Mic foil. I tried and failed. I don't even think it work with Gina K, either. I tried hers too. It only works with it's own kind the We r memory Keepers. Ps. If you go to their we r memory keepers UA-cam. Ask questions they will respond in a day or sooner.

There’s a subtle difference between all 3. In person it’s a lot more visible.
This was my question... it doesn’t show up that much. The follow up Being is it worth having all 3? Or could you just get the middle one and be satisfied?

Do U know what 'firmware' is ?.. Or if it MIGHT help?.. I don't know if the Quill Foil will work with CE2.. Have U heard of anyone else having trouble with their brand NEW CE2?.
Firmware is permanent software programmed into a read-only memory. It is what helps to boot up a computer and get it started. I honestly have no idea if that will help you get your machine working attain.
You can not use a coupon at Joann's. It's considered a cutting machine. I work there.

It seems to be a very expensive way to add foil to a project. I would suggest putting a Sakura glue pen in the holder instead, cost only a couple of dollars (I'm guessing, since I am in Europe) and can be used with normal transfer foils, nail foils etc. Alternatively buy some really good metallic pens and use in the same way.
One of the advantages of the quill is the debossed look you get with the pressure of the pen.
Lol, I can get that easily enough anyway with my machine tools if I want to but maybe the Circuit can't do that.
The great thing about the crafting world is that not everyone has to use the same tools and there are so many different ways to get similar effects. We all have different preferences and that’s what makes this world so Beautiful.

Make sure that the tape doesn't cover any of your design, it has to make full contact with just the foil. if the tape is in the way it will skip that spot.

Honestly I was super impressed with the results. In my opinion it’s not any more work then I do for any other project. We will agree to disagree.
