This is their early years ( to me, their best years) from a fantastic album, when they were connected to the band they so admired (said Suggs), The Specials (Two Tone). Our House came much much later. Madness and The Specials... what a fantastic combo! RUDE BOY...RUDE BOY! lol I'm a huge fan, from the other side of the pond.
Madness videos are an art form in their own right. AND I suspect that the total cost of all of those videos was less than the catering cost for "Thriller" 😆
I'm American and I was a little kid when Our House came out, and it was an unforgettable sound and music video. Years later when I discovered Monty Python, I realized where their visual humor came from.
my buddy lived in this condemned church with an amazing sound system and he'd blast this song to get us up in the morning to go to school.. so good .. love the horns .. ska and the horns .. why nobody has a horn section anymore ? and heavy bass!!! thanks for the memories mate
In this song, Suggs does nothing except dancing. The words are pronunced by Cathal Smith (or Chas Smash) the seventh Madness. The 4 first albums by this 7 member band are fantastic especially 1 and 2. I can't say if I prefer the first or the second one. Both very entertaning. Madness has never experienced any lineup change in their quite long existence, which is not common for a band of this size. They had a hit all over the world in the 80's, Our House. I think this hit has overshadowed the rest of the band output. Unfortunately Madness have become obscure in the world (with the exception of UK). I love Madness and I love 80's ska.
Great reaction, brings back happy memories! It’s Chas Smash on lead vocals in this one - Suggs is amongst the band, doing some of the backing sound work into a microphone.
In the Ska genre, there are at least two other singles released in the UK in October 1979: "On My Radio" by The Selecter and "A Message to You Rudy" by The Specials ! This was followed in November '79 by The Beat's double single A-side "Tears of a Clown"/"Ranking Full Stop".
Fun bit of trivia: "Well listen, Buster," is a shout out to the originator of the song, Prince Buster. (Madness is actually the title of one of his songs, too, and the source of the band's name!)
Chelsea plays this after every home game, at least from what I hear in the background as the television announcers wrap up the game on the field, er, pitch. Madness broke through in the US with "Our House" in 1982 and "Wings of a Dove" in 1983. The energy in their much is highly infectious.
The Buster they mention is Prince Buster a Jamaican reggae artist . The music is called Ska, absolutely mad popular in England in the 70s & 80s . A real pnenomonon... such a rabbit hole .The Specials, The Beat, a lot of the Specials songs were relating to the social political situation in the towns in England they grew up in, due to Margaret Thatchers policies .
So,anyone from Britain over 40.if your party is going a bit flat stick on one step beyond or nite boat to Cairo and good chance your party's getting wrecked!!!!!
If you like this watch the tv show young ones the a song on the song this album started The two tone era with the special and bad manners and English beat
Hello mate first time on yr channel. Can't deny I'm surprised this is your first time with this classic. Is it just the vid you ain't seen/heard before?
Dude, 😒 you have no idea how upset I was when the East Coast 40th Anniversary Tour of 😎 Madness & 🎷 English Beat got cancelled. 🤗 It was gonna be like old times! EB finally played a makeup show March 29, 2022 at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC 🙄 but couldn't reschedule Daryl's House performance. 😉 Madness & EB w/Daryl would have been fun tho'! ☺️🐰
@@etc7070 🤗 Went from 2yrs of no shows to..... we finally got apb in from Scotland on April 1+2 for makeup dates at Mercury Lounge. Howard Jones just played Sony Hall. China Crisis, The Alarm, Psychedelic Furs & Modern English all have upcoming rescheduled dates. 😁 Shows are really back in NYC, but still haven't done any Tri-State shows yet.
How old are you mate? You recone you never heard this before! Look up prince buster ,one step beyond this is a cover, originally just an intro to get them on stage.
Tip for you, when reviewing Madness always watch the videos, they were a big part of the groups attraction and always entertaining in themselves, and you will get so much more out of the songs than just listening to them. I suggest you watch/listen to Baggy Trousers, House Of Fun, Cardiac Arrest and Our House, to name just a few,
You know that one band you just can’t abide. Yeah that’s Madness for me. Much prefer any of the Midlands ska bands. Like The Specials, The Selector Ora The Beat
That is not suggs that does the intro that's cathal smyth aka chas smash. Where have you been in the last 45 years!!!!!! Madness are still going today. So crawl out from under that rock and listen.
Loved the look on your face at the beginning Harry!!!!

This should be Britain's National Anthem! We love the Nutty Boys here in the States!
Madness videos are an art form in their own right. AND I suspect that the total cost of all of those videos was less than the catering cost for "Thriller" 😆
Stay SHARP!
I'm American and I was a little kid when Our House came out, and it was an unforgettable sound and music video. Years later when I discovered Monty Python, I realized where their visual humor came from.
So many Madness songs. Takes me right back to my London childhood. I love "Embarrassment" "My Girl" "Michael Caine" and "It Must be Love"
This was one of the first videos I ever remember seeing on MTV when it first came on the air and they played videos continuously.😂👍
Yes! Definitely in that pantheon of early MTV videos that exposed us to so much music that we likely would have otherwise never heard.
Night Boat to Cairo is my favorite Madness song.
Oh me too. Lovely stuff
my buddy lived in this condemned church with an amazing sound system and he'd blast this song to get us up in the morning to go to school.. so good .. love the horns .. ska and the horns .. why nobody has a horn section anymore ? and heavy bass!!! thanks for the memories mate
literally everyone has heard this song; or at least parts of it; in a commercial, a tv show, or movie.
In this song, Suggs does nothing except dancing. The words are pronunced by Cathal Smith (or Chas Smash) the seventh Madness.

I could listen to this song all day.

Delightful stuff. Started skanking immediately. Soo good.
Old American here ,had a blast at their shows back in the day. Still love it

thanks, Harri! Madness had the best humour! lol Love them!...
Ska will NEVER die. 😎💯
I only heard this song through the Darts from the Lakeside a few years ago, classic tune :)
Always a joy listening to this record. Great reaction.
Fun bit of trivia: "Well listen, Buster," is a shout out to the originator of the song, Prince Buster. (Madness is actually the title of one of his songs, too, and the source of the band's name!)
Their "Our House" is a favorite of mine. Check it out!
Sheer genius,& mad with it!
great song..
It wont allow me to hit the like button more than once 🤘❤️ thanks for keeping ska alive harri
wow - I hadn't seen it either and i bought the record back in the day :D Thanks for the memories :P
I definitely remember this video from way back when MTV first started. I never say that singing intro though.
Chelsea plays this after every home game, at least from what I hear in the background as the television announcers wrap up the game on the field, er, pitch. Madness broke through in the US with "Our House" in 1982 and "Wings of a Dove" in 1983. The energy in their much is highly infectious.
I enjoyed your reaction!
One of my favorites
In the US Madness was popular with the songs One step beyond, Our House and It Must Be Love due mostly to MTV showing their videos.
Gotta love them nutty boys and their nutty sound! 🏁
Best use of echo since 'Double Barrel'.
Great! They always did good videos. And had a string of hits. I like Baggy Trousers, and Our House. Plenty more to mine!
This had me skanking in the kitchen while preparing the dishwashing.
A rock version of square dance music ...with someone calling the tune...it's a quirky fun lil ditty! Thanks Harri
When we all thought we were Ska in the 80s we all danced to this in our creepers.
I was heart broken when I learned this was a cover.
So,anyone from Britain over 40.if your party is going a bit flat stick on one step beyond or nite boat to Cairo and good chance your party's getting wrecked!!!!!
that was Chas Smash singing ;) I had a pork pie hat when i was 12 lol - maybe Stand Down Margaret by the Beat? RIP Rankin Roger
The best!! Love ska! Used to gig with a band called the Two-Tones, Toronto, 1980. More reggae.
*dances wildly*
Let's have a shout out to Prince Buster aswell please, after all he wrote it.
“It must be love” next please.
Something I always wished would have happened is a collaboration between Madness and the Beastie Boys. Talk about madness!
This is actually a cover of Prince Buster "One Step Beyond"
Stamford Bridge..after Chelsea's match...you can hear this song...
If you like this watch the tv show young ones the a song on the song this album started The two tone era with the special and bad manners and English beat
Prince Buster 1964 one step beyond
It was the B-side to Al Capone which the Specials covered as Gangsters
Ill be honest. 1st time ive seen the video also. For a girl born in London 1975 im shocked i didnt know i hadn't 😲 😅
Hello mate first time on yr channel. Can't deny I'm surprised this is your first time with this classic. Is it just the vid you ain't seen/heard before?
Please review the original One Step Beyond (1964) by Jamaican ska-man Pince Buster.
Now it has to be Liquidator by Harry J and the All Stars !
The original is Prince Buster
The. HEY YOU part is used a lot by djs in turntables battles and remixes
Good music.
You didn't recognise Suggs because it wasn't him. He was doing the kind of chuggadugdug in the background.
👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤
You have to move when you listen to this.
a young ray winstone dancing in the video
Do 'Bed And Breakfast Man', my favourite ska tune.
Dude, 😒 you have no idea how upset I was when the East Coast 40th Anniversary Tour of 😎 Madness & 🎷 English Beat got cancelled. 🤗 It was gonna be like old times! I was going to see Madness in NYC as well! I haven't been to any concert in over 2 years now, oof...

Trying watching the top of the pops uk show version very funny
Best
How old are you mate?
You recone you never heard this before!

ONE STEP BEYOND …ITS ONLY GOT ONE SENTENCE THATS THE TITLE. WHY AM I IN CAPITAL LETTERS?❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Gen X knows their songs cause MTV use to play the sh*t out of them in the early 80s
Baggy Trousers is another good song.
This was boring when I was 20 years old. It's a nostalgia bomb now. Grinning.
Maybe you'll react to some Judge Dread songs. Big Six, for example.
Madness stole all of their songs from Jamaica but it's all good, we all enjoyed their songs when I was a kid.
Prince Buster did the original
I think they call this. Skaa music
They and other bands, especially The Specials, not only revived but put their own spin on Ska with a little dash of punk.
You know that one band you just can’t abide. Yeah that’s Madness for me. Much prefer any of the Midlands ska bands. Like The Specials, The Selector Ora The Beat
are you for real????
They had a racist following and dabbled in racism themselves. Even while they were appropriating Jamaican music.
Nutty band but they are amazing

The Naziest sound around
