Absolutely crazy that this Melbourne team didn't win a flag. They stayed healthy towards the end of 94 and blitzed the flag favourites from 7th. Ravaged with injury come the Prelim against West Coast although no one was probably beating the Eagles that year. But we missed Lyon, Schwartz, Neitz, Jakovich, Charles, Lovett, Lovell, White for large chunks of the year. Same in 95 and 96. Could never keep them all on the park for long enough.
The 1990s were a strange time for attendances. Only 56,000 at this match between two Melbourne-based clubs, with the empty seats at one end a comical look. In any previous or current era, these two teams would fill the MCG for a final. Australia was out of recession by 1994, but the recovery was painfully slow and would of course be a large factor in not selling every ticket. Maybe they were just too expensive for the time?
I remember this day. Probably the rare occasion Melbourne supporters outnumbers Carlton supporters. It was very strange. Melbourne vs Footscray the following week got 80k.

Carlton fans took their success for granted back then perhaps?
