I really don't understand why some people criticize Johnny Depp's singing, it's so beautiful here, especially when he sings the lyric "you grow warm in my hands..." beautiful :')
I watched an interview with Stephen Sondheim about the film. He was very happy with their performances. Also, and I am sorry I don't have the link handy, but there is a video here of Sondheim teaching the song. It appears Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham Carter are singing it to the letter of his expectations. Personally, I think it's the best performance of the many I have heard. Most are overstated and 'too Broadway' for my tastes.
Joseph Dutra I love Depp deeply in my very soul. I love this movie. But the other singers blow him out of the water. But his acting is phenomenal here.
Claire Baire I work in a kitchen for nine years, sharpening knives has been my specialty since I learned how to sharpen swords over in Japan I am able to make kitchen knives as sharp as lethal weaponry and to this day I still sing this song in my head while putting fresh edges on the blades of knives. I tell you this to let you know you're not alone, I do it all the time.
When Lovette says "silver is good enough for me" seems like she knows that won't ever be the 1st one in Sweeney's heart, Lucy always will be the "golden one" so Lovette accept silver (2nd place). It's kinda sad.
Ive always thougth (thougth? I dont know, english is my second language, thinked maybe?) that he doesnt really care about his blades, hes just so desperate because he was waiting to get home and find his wife and daughter waiting for him, but when he got home the only thing that was waiting for him was his blades and it was the only thing that keep him from going completely insane, well thats my opinion.
I just love how this musical has two people singing the same tune but different topics. Just goes to show how much song can really communicate a lot, sometimes more than words.
Excuse me, what? Isn't it as pathetic to send such messages yourself? Doesn't it only show how very little intelligence you possess yourself? To judge so fast, with so little information to back you up?
Symbolic of how through the whole movie Ms Lovett is desperate for his love and attention but Sweeney is so obsessed with and consumed by his revenge that he sees nothing else
Johnny's voice is sublime - so much longing. Heartbreak and madness combined. It's like he's acting through his singing voice, like he's putting that amazing acting ability right there in his voice. I would pay good money to have more of Johnny singing to listen to. I wish he'd recorded more songs.
@@aspiringjoker2883 Yeah and I found out the original Sweeney Todd played by George Hearn was the voice actor for Red from All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 and it be cool to see Johnny Depp doing a Tim Burton version of Jekyll and Hyde Musical too.
Honestly Depp is my favorite version of Sweeney Todd. Most people I’ve seen play the role have a booming deep voice with power. Depp has a snarling, soothing voice that just sits better with me than the others. He brings a softer but scarier tone to the character. I have always loved this version.
Stéph de Chantraine every time summer ends and i open my bag to look for my calculator fx-570 i think of this song. Beutiful and usefull calculator by the way.
This song is tragic to the very sole of it, Barker comes home after fifteen years of exile, hoping to find his wife and daughter at home, but instead finds out that his wife is dead and his daughter raised and held captive by the very man who caused it all. Then he finds his raizors, and projects all his affection and feelings towards them, instead of the family he was hoping for, and turns his mind towards vengeance. Very depressing, but beautifully made. And then when Lovett joins the song, with her affection and desire for him, it adds depth to their whole relationship. Sondheim is a genius.
And then when it reveals that his wife was never dead until Benjamin himself killed her, It shown how Mrs Lovett was truly not his friend, But a monster who took that role for Benjamin himself, Whether for the free meat in the pies or Benjamin as a person, It is still sad
@@AverageDunce Yeah and I read a fanfiction story where he doesn't kill her by mistake but instantly recognizes her and spares her and fights the Judge guy but he dies after beating him.
I just love how they connect Mrs. Lovett being in love with Sweeny during this scene and talking about him, in comparison to Sweeny talking about the knives using the same lyrics. It’s honestly perfection.😌 especially when she’s talking about him being warm in her hand but Sweeny is talking about the knives being warm in his hand.
No way. The Hal Prince stage production eats this for breakfast. Depp lacks the gravitas needed for Sweeney. There's just something incredibly lightweight about his performance.

Ya I can relate lol
I can relate as well.
I just watched Sondheim teaches on this musical number, I have to be honest...Johnny Depp got how Sondheim pictured it. As his voice were calm, seductive yet horrifying at the same time.
This is my favourite movie from Johnny Depp.
God. His. Voice u can really hear the pain in voice 😭😭❤❤
Stephen: 'Sing as if you're making love to your razor'
Johnny: 'Challenge accepted.'
When I heard this for the first time I certainly wasn´t ready for 0:46 😮🤩
And I´m still amazed by Jhonny´s clear singing voice especially when it comes to the high notes 😍😍
Johnny Depp has perfect voice, he can sing soo beautiful ❤i love he😍when he acting and singing in one moment, it is perfect ❤
This is 3 minute song about a dude singing about a razor and him, and it was awesome, and I guess Mrs. Lovett is there too I guess.
