I can't say how much I appreciate you making this tribute to Steven. I struggle to find the right word, but I think "unsettling" is as close as I can get, that the passing of such a giant of the scientific community garners so little attention by the wider public. It says something about our society I don't much like, but the WSF is one of the key movements in trying to address that.

wow. just wow. The last 2 or 3 minutes are the most profound and beautiful thing I've heard in ages. Greene says that a collection of particles following the Standard Model formed into Steven Weinberg on whose shoulders we now stand so we can see farther. That is the ultimate tribute to any person, in my opinion. I love how Weinberg, giving his final summation of the pointlessness of life, closes his eyes while he speaks. It's like his heart is pouring out with a desperate wish to get the words exactly right. He wants to clearly convey the philosphy he's been developing all his life and tell it to us. wow. just wow.
He has been an inspiration to me for many years in my studies. I will miss listening to his talks. He was a true giant in science. Great man and scientific legend.
I was always deeply inspired by Steven Weinberg, but what most impressed me in this video it was the obvious intellectual clarity and insightfulness of Dr. John Preskill. What a well-chosen guest!
As someone who only now is coming back to science by randomly coming across Brian’s “Space, Time, and Einstein” six months or so ago as a 32 year old I am very interested to learn more about how Steven Weinberg has been influential. Thanks for doing this from Cherry Hill, NJ.

Professor Green: this is a great service to the memory of Steven Weinberg. Steven has been my hero and driving force for the last 40 years. A Jewish genius, like Einstein. May be a connection. Electroweak unification was brilliant. It may not be correct as time progresses. But the road to Unity may be a false mirage. Stevens's books on Cosmology and QM are masterful. But...what inspired me as a 17 year old boy was 'The First Three Minutes'. The 1st 3 mins changed my world. Steven was a genius of communication (like you Brian!) But the best of the best!

It is so enjoyable to listen to people who can express themselves in an erudite manner. If we have to go to news sites for some information about current events, it is so annoying to have to listen to all those semi-literate journalists and commentators bloviating.
I got to see him in an intimate setting when he spoke in a classroom when I attended University of Maryland in the early 80's. It was amongst my early glimpses of what exists beyond what this appears to be.
How do you extrapolate from the development of the Standard Model and GR to understanding the underlying reality of everything, the origin of the Universe and infinity, and the meaning of life? Last I checked our understanding ends abruptly at the limits of the superficial models we use to help us understand reality.

one of the other great giant who deserves mention but rarely mentioned is Dr. Satyendranath Bose whose paper on Bose Einstein condensation is one of seminal papers in physics laying the basic premise for the development of super conductivity which led to the great advancement in electronics and Boson talked in this video is named after him . I think that some of the greatest scientists in the world not born in US and Europe outside USSR tend to be ignored either accidentally or intentionally .The noble prize although is considered as the greatest accolade in the filed of science is not necessarily so and a lot of scientists who do not get the Nobel Prize for one reason or the other fail to be recognized. It should not be the Nobel Prize but the their work that needs to be recognized . Dr. Satyen Bose is just such an example.
Dear Brian, if what we observe from the most distant parts of the universe is roughly the same, suggesting that our view of the universe is isotropic, how is it the we don't see the first observable event inflation in a particular location. How is it that this "moment" and potential locale is seen to surround us evenly?
When he was talking about the standard model not being able to include gravity with the three fundamental forces which seem to be unified at a certain point in the early universe, I wondered about Einstein's assertion that gravity was not a force but was the result of the curvature of space. So, if gravity is not a force why are we still looking to include it with the strong, weak and EM forces? And why look for a graviton as a carrier of force? Then again, I wonder how a curved space can impart mass to an object? That seems to require a force.
Maybe you understand, why matter and particles moves i curved spacetime, but if there not was a gravitational force, what would then be the reason to why movements of natter changed and why is spacetime being curved? I'm asking because I think their is a force which make matter curve spacetime and vice versa make curved spacetime determ how matter should move! What do you think?
@@connyespersen3017 Yes, I agree that gravity is a force. I would clarify one thing that i said in my post about imparting mass to an object. That was incorrect. Objects do have mass but have no intrinsic weight. The force of gravity makes things heavy. I don't see how mere curvature could do that.
4:13 Same thing happened to me, but it was the small-angle formula for the period of a simple pendulum. That was a profound personal experience. Alas, my career has been nothing like Steven's though 🙂

It was a dissertation given by a Brilliant psychologist and neuroscientist to one of his senior students many many years ago. It highlights many of Donald Hoffman's current ideas only delves even deeper into the subject if you're interested.

Yet he collaborated with others and was directly influenced by the works of others throughout his entire professional life. I do not believe your statement is reasonable.
The consciousness is very important, and that will be reached during your lifetime, if you won’t reach your consciousness, by the ages that you should, even if you model it is not fully understandable, not for you and not for others
