Shame the breed has gotten to a point where they think this heavily sloped back nonsense is better looking than a straight back. That dog is not functional, makes no sense to turn a working breed into this abomination. Happy a GSD won, not happy where the breed has gone to do so. 50lbs female with a heavily sloped back.

I love my German Shepherd (working line). Rumor is nice, but I can't stand those show line GSDs. Their backs are so sloped down that it looks like they are walking/running like a frog.
Tom Smith yea that bothers me as well..... I don't get why that is deemed attractive for a GSD to walk like that.
Anyone with a basic understanding of physics should be able to look at that and say that a dog should not look that way. I feel bad for those doggies.

Rumor is actually an improvement from what I've seen in the ring in the last few years. A few in past shows actually made me weep, they looked and walked so abnormally. Still too sloped for my liking though.
I agree. They finally seem to realize they went too far with the hock walking. Rumor moves beautifully. Reminds me of Manhattan.
He is a beauty, but I wish theyd change the standard to eliminate that extreme angulation in the hind quarters. The *German* German Shep looks far more stable & hardy to me.

Aida Hehir look at the gsds from the early 1900s. they were stacked the same exact way and backs still straight. so something must have changed. (hocks??)

I love how all the dogs carry themselves so proudly.
But your right her back legs do look longer than many I’ve seen..and yet the first thing he talks about is breeder her..now you have me staring at my dogs legs!lol...so how do you find out if it’s from a work8mg line or show line!?? a I get the show line just look for a good show dog ,but working not sure,as mine is a service dog, but has a family going back who also showed them..

I don't think it's proud. They don't like having that thing in their necks, but they have been trained to know that they have to do it in order to get the treat. We tend to personify the dogs, but they don't even have the concept of what a show is.

pain is part of life not part of the rainbows and ponies, the procedure is done with the dog OUT, the same as done when they have to do teeth cleaning or extractions, or any other surgery. Long, floppy ears can and do get injured as well as being a big reason for ear infections throughout the dog's life. Stop being a "back seat driver" go back to the UK and MYOB there and leave the driving to us because you arent going to change this.

Joan Donachie you misunderstood me. There's always a reason behind everything. The reason why boxers have their tails docked was because they used to be butcher dogs pulling the carts of meat The reason why they dock their tail is so that the tail won't get smashed when the cart fell on them. I personally like them with natural ears and dock tails. And if you are police dogs or military dogs don't have dog tails are cropped ears and they have a high chance of getting them hurt when they are at work that's why we need to dock and crop. Even if it's for work or for looks it's still doesn't cause the dog any pain. Docking is done with the puppy is at least two days old. At that age there nervous system hasn't build up yet so chopping off their tail won't hurt them one bit. Cropping the ears is done under anesthesia and afterwords the dog may have scars but it does not cause him any physical pain. Boxers were also used as fighting dogs so in the pit they would crop their ears just so that the other dog wouldn't clamp on and tear their ears. I seriously don't understand how you consider this abuse when it's clearly helping the dog

Hock walking is a disqualification, it may look like it, but it's just bad handling or conditions.
All the dogs were amazing but I was so happy Rumor won. Made me miss my German Shepherd who we just lost recently so much.

I wanted to relive this moment again. Our family has had 3 GSD's over the years- Blitz, Magnum and BJ. Each had their own distinct personalities but all were loyal and fiercely protective. Rumor is a gorgeous GSD - great lines, coloring and trot.

I always loved German Shepherd's. And Rumor is beautiful. I'm glad she won. I still prefer my German Shepherd to look like the German version. that's the way our dog looked growing up.

‘Well bred’ by the standards of the people who created these ridiculous standards. Forget the slope back even, ask yourself this, what is Rumors life expectancy? What is her health like, over the course of her life? And what did the life expectancy and health of gsds used to be like?
@@HkFinn83 her back doesn't slope. It's not that hard to understand. She is stacked (stanced manually) to show the rear angulation of the hind legs. When she stands normally she has a nice level topline. Rumors pedigree is well known for longevity. Her parents are still alive. She is still alive and well. She competes in herding and fastcat now. Older dogs barely made it to their 5th birthday and many were ridden with hip/elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and cardiac issues. Thyroid issues were known in very early stock.
@@artiicom she does not in any way have ‘a nice level topline’. Look at her, its not that hard to understand. These show line gsds die of old age at 8, with myriad health problems. They have some of the worst incidence of hip dysplasia of any breed. German shepherds used to be an amazing dog that was used as working dogs in agriculture, police and military work. They don’t any more because show and backyard breeders ruined them. The gsd is the definition of a ruined breed. And no the dog in this video is not in any way a ‘herding’ dog. ‘Competing’ in a ridiculous ‘show’ is not herding. It’s a bunch of very odd people playing pretend. That’s not that hard to understand.

And again, the AKC is promoting a breed that has been over bred and over bred until it is more or less handicapped on it's back end. These dogs have unstable hips and are running on their heels more or less. This dog it is true, is a less handicapped than a lot of GSD show dogs and certainly better than the GSD who won at Crufts causing such a furore. But go to any large dog show and watch the GSD class. They are all running on their heels just as this dog is. I used to show GSDs back in the 80s and a dog like this would not be anywhere near the show ring because it would be regarded as unfit for showing. It makes me so very angry that show judges and the AKC along with other Kennel Clubs have allowed GSDs to become like this. If the Judges did not allow these dogs to win, and the Kennel Club came out against this kind of breeding then the breeders would not breed it. Simple.

I have to say I have a Working line dog myself and I do prefer the WLs more but it doesn't mean I dislike ASLs any less.
Rumor, the dog you just said is a bad example, in fact has OFA Excellent hips and does not gait on her hocks.
If you saw the WKC Dog Show in the past 2 years when Rumor was there ,the show was recorded at a lower angle so you can see that this dog never does gait on her hocks. If you were to run this video a few more times and look carefully examining her motion ,you'd probably notice it too.
Reason why she is winning is because this dog, unlike other Gsds in the bloodline, does fit the breed standard pretty well. She is a nicely built dog. Very athletic too.
Unfortunately it seems that people today are being brainwashed into thinking that a dog with a sloping back is normal. I watched this video several times and I saw her hocks almost touching the ground. I've watched GSDs in the ring at other shows where I was there in person. It actually made me want to weep for this breed that I used to love so much. This is the reason that I don't have GSDs any longer.

The "sloping back" is nothing but an illusion caused by the way the dog is stacked(posed) I know this is true for most ASL dogs because I myself have seen them in the ring and out.
Now if you really don't like these Showline dogs at all get yourself a Working line Gsd instead. No need to go on living without this breed.

Sadly as I go about my daily business, I see GSDs out on walks that have wobbly back ends that can barely hold them up, hocks on the ground and people tell me "its just a pet". Saying cameras are playing tricks is being in denial I am afraid. I met some people a while back with a nice GSD with a straight back and a good rear end and the owners said that they had wanted to show her but were told that she wasn't the right "type" because she had a straight back. I wish on here I could show you a photo of the GSD that I used to show, with her lovely straight back and strong back end. She was from German show lines. Her parents were both champion show dogs as well as being schutzhund champions.

The German lines should be the standard for the GSD with the straight back and big frame! The Americans have destroyed the GSD, and I'm an American saying that. A male GSD should weigh 100 to 115lbs. and females should weigh about 75 to 90lbs. The working class GSDs are much stronger and don't have the health issues that the show dog GSDs have.
straight back is a byb term. german shepherds require angulation for their original purpose. Their angulation allows them to smoothly trot to herd as a living fence
Straight and level backs ARE in standard, big dogs are not. Bigger dogs aren't efficient herders.

That’s a brilliant example of a German shepherd. It can move swiftly and without pain - he was also put into stance that isn’t how they look when stood normally - a poorly bred German shepherd wouldn’t win a major show like this so I wish people would do their research. Well done Rumour

Czech Working lines have really straight backs and I prefer them to German show lines now. They are taking over slowly which is great stuff! Too many GSD's have backs like a collapsed shelf.

Timothy Galano Unfortunately, the ears are just for appearances and I agree should be taken away, but the tail docking actually has real benefits. A boxer's tail is extremely powerful, so unless you would want to buy several new vases whenever they get excited, it helps to have a docked tail.
They could also repeatedly injure there tail and need it removed anyway.

I loved my 12 year old German German Sheperd..he was a Gorgeous longhair..stopped traffic everywhere I went..people thought he was Gorgeous and he was. TRACKER was the best dog ever..I feel sorry for pugs but had them all my life. But I agree they shouldnt breed certain traits at the dogs expense.

hip dysplasia is a genetic disease that has nothing to do with structure. nevertheless, this dog is extremely healthy

German Shepherds are wonderful. The only bad thing about this breed winning is it that some foolish people will go out and buy one because this breed won the show. People that have no business or proper place for this breed of dog. GSD's are working dogs that need a lot of activity and attention and room to run. They want a job to do and to please you doing it. Please don't buy one unless you can give the dog this kind of life. I guess that goes for any dog. Do your best to give them a good life. They will be true blue to you till the last beat of their heart.

The coverage of this show was abysmal. You could barely the the dog's proper gait and structure with the awful angles and audience cuts. I don’t think I got a proper look at a stacked dog once. All I could see was the handler's backsides.
What about registered names? Call names are fun and all, but way to not give credit to breeders; and what if I wanted to look up more about the dog? Registration names weren't mentioned until the individual examinations.
Announcers know nothing; "why carry him" during the pekingese's intro, my goodness. I was surprised they didn't ask why the setter's ear was being held. Commenting on how the dogs set themselves up - you mean like how they're supposed too? And discussing the bait so much... Have these people never been ringside? "Other competitors waiting patiently for their turn" oh my. And yes, of course the dog can enhance their chance of winning while they go around - that's literally the whole point. Mentioning the pekingese being carried out again during individual examinations, my goodness. That's how the breed is shown, get over it; BIS isn't handed out for steps taken - nor because the dog "asked for it". I wonder if they watched "Best In Show" for research.
Unrelated, but the crowd was also awful; this is a prestigious show, not the superbowl. No need to call out the name of your favorite dog or scream and whoop as a dog goes around.
Great to see so many BOH in the BIS ring. Poodle was really nice. Loved the setter as well. Congratulations to Rumor, she's a beautiful example of the breed. Shame the coverage didn't do her justice.

I cant stand how natural herding dogs never get any love in the herding group. australian cattle dogs, border collies or kelpies. My blue heeler will herd circles around any german shepherd. Plus, these shows glorify show lines. All show line breeders do is ruin breeds.
We can only hope, GSD Female Owner! After all, it really is not so much the breeders' fault, as the judges. Breeders who want their dogs to win will breed for what the judges reward in the ring. Judges are looked to as experts, and are supposed to pick the dog that is closest to the written standard for the breed - which should reflect sound conformation (structure) and characteristics that enable the dog to be healthy and to excel at the purpose for which they were originally developed. At least, that's the theory...

I love GSD. My first dog was also a GSD. They are exceptional. I'm not a fan of these dog shows but I'm glad the GSD won. Also GSDs are best hardy imo. Loving the Boxer too. Very good breed.

Not so much 'overbreeding' as rewarding the wrong thing in the show ring - which led to breeding for exaggerated rear leg angulation, and exaggerated slope to the topline.

I have had a GSD basically all 28 years of my time on this earth... no greater dog.
This was the year I got my Maxim. He was papered German Shepherd but no where near this kind of discipline!
I had put put him down last August. He had cancer. I still love German Sheppards and regard them as the best dogs in the world. One day I'll get another.
Not for this competition, but he was the most gentle and best dog I ever known. He made me a dog person and why I watch this..Dogs are the best kind of people.

My brother adopted a show GSD from the shelter. She literally has calluses on the backs of her hocks. She wobbles, and practically trips because her rear legs are almost completely lined up. You can tell she is stressed and uncomfortable. Very sad.

It's so depressing to see shepherds bred for looks. The german bred working German Shepherds truly deserve to be the only standard. The slant is so pointless.

It's not called messed up it's called showing off and they are very pretty let's make their back more sloped now shall we?
The back looks like this because of angulation/the way dog is stacked. If you were to stack any breed of dog in three-point stack, their back would look just the same. Rumor has a good back that remains straight and doesn't roach even when she's moving and overall looks like a functional and balanced dog.
Tho it needs to be mentioned that 'hyper-types' absolutely are a thing (especially in German Showlines, but also in American ones) that actually have weak and roached backs and that's sad.

Agreed,that she's a nice dog but there is no roach on this dog, otherwise she wouldn't have won the breed group. The AKC considers the roaching topline trait faulty.

Aw, she (Rumor) is so beautiful. They are so noble. I'm bunking with my 10th GS, Debbie Dog. (a rescue from city pound). the grandaughters love her because she is so protective. However, she HATES singing and howls during it. she even howls thru Final Jeopardy music and that always cracks us up....what a beauty and joy they are....

German shepherds used to be the best back when they were working dogs,kept packs of germans back when they were straight back,was disappointed to see what they've become.
Straight back is a backyard bred term. My asl showline comes from a line of titled herding dogs

WOOOOHOOO GERMY SHEPPIE!!!! German Shepherds are my fave .. I have a beautiful female. I filled out a sort of "fanatasy football" type thing but, for the dog show . I picked the GSD for the herding group and REALLY wanted to pick it as best in show , but it was the only one I felt like I picked based off of personal feelings .... should of picked it anyways!
