AEB for HDR Photography

Do we still need to use auto exposure bracketing to capture high dynamic range images with our cameras?
How does one use AEB to create HDR landscape photographs.
Should one bracket images one stop apart, two stops apart, three stops apart? What is the right answer?
Does the post processing software that is going to be used matter when deciding how to auto exposure bracket landscape images in the field.
Are modern cameras good enough that we do not need to bracket photos?

I find 3 shots 2 stops apart works for me.

Maybe 5 images is could be a nice compromise
