The 80s were a beauty in age-group competitions due to the YSFON and Academicals program that produced the greats like Stephen Keshi, Henry Nwosu, Samson Siasia, Ndubuisi Okosieme, et al. The local league at the time was brimming with stars as well. Imagine that NEPA even had a team then which produced Adeolu Adekolu at the time. These players were the bedrock of the USA 94 squad. A lesson to us: success at the top level is not a day's journey. Pick them when they are young in the primary schools, groom them and they will be the stars of tomorrow.

Ndubuisi Okosieme was one of my favourite players when I was a child.

Lol at 3:15 the commentator said a "pregnant woman could have scored that goal"! No filter whatsoever.

Lawrence Ukaegbu missed so many goals during that qualifying series and he was badly hit by the Nigerian press. That second goal he scored was his redemption as it was the only goal he scored in the qualifiers. He later got injured in Chile 87. Never heard from again.

Nigeria of the 1980's...times were hard, but at least we had our youth squads to cheer us up.

I saw the 87 finals live on TV,
I think Etim Esin missed this after being shot by armed robbers
    Commentator sounds like Fabio Lanipekun
Please can you get footage of Challenge Cup finals in the 80s

About Etim Esin missing this match, It's like that was when he was disciplined and thrown out of the team by Flying Eagles coach Christopher Udemezue for breaking camp rules. Later, the Team Manager of Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Uche Ejimofor had to travel to Lagos and beg the Flying Eagles coach on his behalf because at that time he was a player of Iwuanyanwu Nationale Fc.

Coach Chris Udemezue and Etim Esin did not like each other. Etim Esin was very heady and was thrown off the team for indiscipline. Ejimofor had to beg on his behalf. Same indiscipline got him into trouble as he went clubbing and ran into robbers. He was shot and had the 505 Saloon given by Chief Iwuanyanwu to all his players stolen.
