Nice one. The viewfinder looks good and your tips on using a shoulder rig are also very helpful, Tony
I just discovered your channel 2 days ago and it is absolutely invaluable, amazing consonant and you are a fantastic cinematographer and your explanations are very well-articulated. thank you so much!
Thanks Shadai! Glad you dig the channel!
A viewfinder is a must for any true cinematographer.
Great channel - keep up the goodness! I prefer to use a monitor if I have the choice. Obviously having both is the best! I often shoot reality and with animals involved. I need peripheral vision all day. Often its just me and a presenter so for storytelling I need to know whats happen around me to catch moments in my peripheral vision and know that where and what Im will turn to next to capture.
I agree a EVF is indispensable for very sunlight days and great for emersion in the world you telling. But as you point out you need to be very careful. For those considering an EVF and shouldering a camera beware in general it means your entire right side is blocked to me seeing. I once had a near fatal experience filming elephants. I failed to see them to my front right just above me on a river bank. They stumbled amongst the steep trees and rocks and three crashed down around me. I was only saved by a small tree that happened to be next to me which deflected their fall.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've picked up so many great tips and info from following your channel. That rig looks like a beast! As an alternative to that setup depending on your needs, the C200 stripped down using just the built in EVF and hand grip works great, its light, stable with IS on lens, can shoot hand held for a few hours without too much fatigue. Easy to throw on a tripod, gimbal, or in the car, put away at end of the day, its ready to roll. I couldn't imagine building that and tearing it down on a regular basis unless it was going to live like that. I tried putting the C200 on an offset shoulder rig that I used for dslr, the weight was too far forward and after 5 minutes forearms were shaking, sounded like a good idea, but not really...lol. I guess if shoulder work is only part of your workflow, big balanced rig not necessary to get the job done. Liking your lighting setup in this vid too.
Thanks Christian! Typically I would leave the camera rigged like this for a multi-day shoot once I've got it set up. It's a pain to rig and unrig otherwise.
I was actually pointing at the camera battery set-up on your camera every time you mentioned shooting from a cramped space. (not complaining --just sharing --wonderful piece.)
Thanks, very informative!!!
Hi. Valuable video and insights... always. Thank you. I know the reasons you purchased the C200B from another video you had. Would the EVF that comes with the system in the C200 (non-B) be comparable to the Gratical, aside from the former being at a different viewing location (back of the camera and hence a whole different balancing issue)? I am considering the C200 over the B version for the use of the EVF, primarily. Is the Canon EVF from the non-B system, limited in its function (like say, no LUT capability)? But yes, it would probably be in an awkward position albeit away from the hum and hot air blast of the cooling fan on the face, I reckon.
Thanks for this. Any thoughts on pros/cons of using Zacuto's C200 Z-Finder, vs the Gratical? It's $500 so obviously much cheaper but not as elegant a solution. On the flip side, it does let you flip it up and access the monitor's touch screen. Thoughts?
Zacuto also make a ptap connector for power to the evf that has a switch on it. Helps keep you from having to pull cable every time on set.
Fun after shooting 16mm and 35mm film for so long, it’s nice to great evf.
Do you have the link to the piece you use to mount the gratical eye. Realize that Zacuto's base plate does not allow for the hand grips, follow focus and matte box. Switching to a Shape Revolt but considering whether I should use the Shape Cage and top handle or Zacuto top handle.
do you recommend a small rig option the zacuto evf mount is way to expensive
Another awesome video! I'm binge watching your videos haha
Do you have any suggestions for something near c200 but without trespassing 5k? Thanks again for these amazing lectures!
You're welcome! The EVA1 does 5.4k Raw output, but lack autofocus.
Crimson Engine but the eva is even more expensive then the c200 (at least here in Europe)
Hi! Another great video. Is there are latency issues with the black magic video assists. I had an ursa mini for a couple months and found the black magic viewfinder and flip out monitor had big delay issues. Curious if that was a ursa mini thing or on the video assist too
I think it might be an Ursa thing. The video assist on the c200 works great.
You shoot some action scene, so I have a question for you: We're using the c200 this summer to shoot a fight scene and would like some slow motion, but I've heard that the trade off in quality (no RAW, loss of color 12 vs 10 bit) isn't worth it. If you we're in the same boat shooting an action sequence, how would you go about it? Would you just rent a different camera? If so, which one?
The 10 bit Raw 60p on the c200 is actually awesome slow mo, its the mp4 120fps that isn't that hot. Just shoot 60p and reconform to 23.976 in the timeline. If you need slower than that, you could experiment with slowing down further in post.
Can this be swapped over for left eye use?
How do you deal with the fan next to the Cfast slot constantly blowing hot air into your ear while using the camera on your shoulder?
You Listen
After owning the camera for over two years now, I’ve come to like the sound of “Shhhhhh” in my ear.
Dovydas Miliauskas 😂
always great vids. thanks. random question: i do not have an EVF, i’m using a Black Magic Video Assist as a monitor/recorder. unfortunately i accidentally switched off the OSD and now i can’t see any of the menu options and the C200 has been rendered useless. any idea how to reset the OSD without being able to see what you’re doing? is there a button somewhere or a factory reset? thx
Go to the media mode instead of camera mode on the big switch on the side and reset the settings :) but also try is the number 7 button on the side. It toggles the display
Crimson Engine i tried switching to media mode, no dice. i also tried toggling on and off the display button 7 and nothing. what finally worked was taking the SDI cable out, and connecting the HDMI directly to our video village monitor and for some reason that worked and we could navigate the menus in media mode. now i’ve set the programmable button 11 to toggle on/off the OSD. thanks for the help! and your channel is awesome!
What matte box is that?
Crimson, as an Australian, your accent freaks me out
Great video! Wondering if you've ever had pixel burn-in or failure on these "budget" OLED EVFs? I know that this Zacuto one has some negative reports on the RED user forum about real life pixel failure if you don't turn it off between takes.
Thanks! I only had this one for a month on loan, but didn't see anything like that. My main issue was the refresh rate on the screen. Its pretty strobey.
Be careful displaying camera info overlaid on the Gratical image - it will pretty quickly burn in leaving a 'ghost' of the display data for ever more.
Yeah, that was one of the things I read about -- I wonder how the much more expensive OLED EVFs prevent burn-in, though. Some kind of analysis/timer? A slow pixel-image shift over time?
I think the solution might be not to have any displays enabled from the camera itself, and to use the gratical wfm etc.
What are these grip arms?
Digressing... if Panasonic’s EVA1 had a viewfinder, they would have sold tons more of that particular camera. Same situation with Canon C70... makes me hesitant to purchase for lack of built in EVF.
c70 is going to be a hard one to shoulder mount given its form factor.
7:10 - Umm...just open the other eye? Trained ENG cam ops shoot with both eyes open for specifically that reason. You're able to concentrate on the dominant right eye while keeping your left open for peripheral awareness.
With ENG that might be necessary since everything has to go quick and it's a tiny crew but on every narrative filmset I was one the cam op had one eye closed and an assistant to guide him. It's impossible IMHO to get a smooth stable shot when you also have keep your surrounding in sight
Here from mando
What if you wear glasses?
You can adjust the diopter on the EVF to compensate.
i love your channel and the content ! and do you have a buisness email ?
Thanks. Dig your user name :) Its rubidiumwu@gmail.com
