My mother always emphasised the importance of walking each day and practiced her ethos by walking at least 8-12 kms per day until her late 70’s. she lived until 92 with a sharp mind and clever wit, beautiful skin and nil autoimmune issues. Walking is a gift to those of us able to do it, especially with one’s dogs.
Currently in the middle of my 6 mile walk while listening to you. There’s such peace and calmness in walking that i can’t describe, I just love being in the nature. Thank you, great advice and you speak the truth !
I just started brisk walking every day a couple weeks ago, minimum 1 hour each time, no distraction from music/talk radio/ear buds, etc. Just my senses, heart rate somewhat elevated, taking in everything with some focused thinking thrown in. Can't believe how calming and how good I feel after 5 or 6 miles. Becoming a habit now.
I came back to this video during the quarantine period with a fresh perspective. I, like many others, am working from home. I look forward to my walk at the end of the day as a way of recharging myself. I can't live without it.
Yes, the benefits of a walk on our mental health at this time, especially as things are kicking off again, are crucial to helping us get through this hellish year.
This is so true, when walking you start to become more attentive to nature, the plants, weather conditions e.g., the beautiful cloud formations, sunsets, birds, etc, very relaxing & therapeutic. The best part for me is, when finished, the shower & a healthy breakfast - beautiful feeling !
I enjoy walking and I like the message here Ralfy . All of our seasons offer something to attract the walker to nature. The physical and mental benefits of walking are immense.
I love a walk! While I try not to obsess about any specific goals, I do feel robbed if I can't get at least an hour in every day. I usually end up with about an hour and a half of movement most days.
I walk every day at lunch when at work. We have a nice walking track nearby that is mostly tree lined. Not an hour and half, more like 35 minutes but it helps me clear my mind. Afterwards I am ready to tackle the technical problems at work again! Lovely country by the way. I live about 25 minute drive from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee, USA. Once or twice a month my wife and I go on a nice day hike there. Different but equally beautiful scenery. And you are correct, there is much better art in nature.
Started my walking again to help with physical health, weight loss and improve my mood. Have found a cemetery near me to start with, and I just go around it a few times (I will pick up the pace as I lose weight and the fitness comes back), but on top of the health benefits, I really enjoy just the environment. Sure people will say you are around death, but there is also so much life around the place too, from squirrels storing their nuts, to hearing the birds chirp in the trees - to the trees themselves! And its peaceful too. I also live on the coast so will start walking near the sea again as you can't beat it, especially when its blustery. WIll get on that before winter hits for sure.
I have an early walk by the Devon coast early each morning before breakfast. No distractions. I walk for a good hour, fast ish! I love it! Thank you for your video. I've just subscribed to your channel.
Lovely country side, I try to walk once a day outside for a hour to clear the head. A great thing about taking a hour walk each day is that I sleep better and feel rested than when I set on my backside.
Thanks, Ralfy. I really needed to see this tonight. I've been working myself too hard, and when I run, I run with earbuds in. As much as I love music, I feel it's probably interfering with the benefits I might get from a nice long walk.
I'm a wheelchair user and i often go on long "walks". I find it incredibly beneficial. One of my favourite routes starts at Luss and i go up to Inverbeg and back, some challenging hills to deal with but the surroundings are worth the effort :-)
Good to see you out in the wild, Ralfy. Sound advice. I find it motivating to push a little farther if walking while fasted. Hope it's a fine week for you and your training!!
I used to be a distance runner in my youth. But injuries and health issues have stopped me from distance running. Insteady I enjoy walking long distances. It is fantastic and really puts my mind right. It is the best thing you can do for your body, your mind and your spirit. I also enjoy bodyweight training and Yoga.
Love it, Ralfy. I'm sure you're aware that what you were describing in the end was not all that dissimilar from mindfulness meditation which is something I love to do on my walks. You're so right about how the mind and body are linked.
When covid-19 happened in February I made my plans. This included walking briskly about four miles every day on my own in the country (i have only missed twice due to weather) I measure everything I can health wise but everything measures perfect! Weight, blood oxygen,, rest heart rate, blood pressure, body fat percentage all ideal! My case rests! I am 75.
Here's a tip. I decided after my 1st few brisk (4.25-4.5 MPH) walks that I should tote along some water. I started to carry 2 500ml bottles figuring carrying only one would put my stride off and VOILA...my rhythm improved + my forearms, wrists shoulders started to tone up while I was carrying a little extra ballast for resistance. Figuring I was on to something I've stepped up to 790ml bottles on my way to 1 litre bottles. You'd be amazed at how much difference a little extra weight makes on improving muscle tone and conditioning in your upper body. Try it, you won't go back to empty hands I promise you!
A couple of thoughts and one gift. Ralfy - this channel has been removed from my subscription list (somehow) 2 times. Finding the link on your whisky channel is nearly impossible. I would like to suggest that you just add it to your normal info. there. This is amazing country, that you enjoy. Beautiful!! simply beautiful. I remember the John Wayne movie "The Quiet Man" Wonderful with such a historical feel, just looking at it. (your country-side) not the movie. I am a very private person. But, I think you should try something that I was taught as a boy. It's called "Becoming a Statue" Just stand. Don't move. If you can make it 1 minute, the first time, I would be very surprised. Be careful!! When you begin to wobble - STOP! You can return to the effort later. Once a day. Keep a chart. When you make 5 minutes, you will be on your way. When you hit 20 minutes, (4 to maybe 6 months) something happens to your thinking. It cannot be described easily. SO I won't try. But the mind and skeleton structure sort of unite. You'll see. This is exceedingly difficult. Muscles can be built in the gym. Lungs can be cleared in the country walks. Those are very good. Becoming a Statue is GREAT! And nearly impossible. Good luck to all that try.
It’s a great undertaking to keep fit. Walking daily is really effective medicine to keep disease a away. Your explanation and recommendation would encourage us to indulge in this beautiful workout. Thanks a lot.
I just discovered your video after 2 years and a pandemic! But listening to you has motivated me. I kind of wish that I could walk in an environment just like yours!
We can survive ages with no food, just finished a 7 day fast (2 days dry fasted) walked a minimum of 6 miles at 4.5 mph every morning, longest was 14 miles...felt great until the last day when I had next to zero body fat to turn into fuel. Walking is a godsend
Quite the idyllic countryside you have there! I make sure to take a 45 min walk outside during almost every lunch break. Really clears the head when you work in an office.
I know this is an old video and your thinking may have very well changed, but I felt the need to bother you on one point. Natural doesn't always mean good, and artificial doesn't always mean bad. After all, there are plenty of naturally poisonous or venomous life forms on Earth, and naturally toxic places (huffing geyser fumes, for instance)! And plenty of artificial chemicals that keep us alive! Just my 2 cents ;) love your videos and very glad I found this channel!
What a beautiful place to walk!! I would thoroughly enjoy riding my bike down that path you're taking. Sometimes i take nice deep breaths to enjoy the slightly polluted air of Houston 😂
Wonderful vlog, Ralfy! Is that a pedestrian walkway you are on? Looks too narrow to be for automobiles (surely not wide enough for 2 way traffic). If it is a walkway proper, it looks worn down by what must be thousands of years of regular use. I am envious!
This might sought stupid but where I live is very loud I walk about 10 miles a day with a very very clean diet I used to lift a lot of weight in the gym natural not taking anything probably since I was 16 ,but before the lockdown I got into walking and cancelled my gym membership, but I like to listen to music it’s a hip hip radio it’s 24/7 never stops music but I love to walk to music it’s like my white noise …is that still going to make me appreciate my walks I mean I feel like i do , I’m also going to try your breathing 😮💨 tomorrow..should be good ,walking is so good for far loss can really rack up the calories and it’s been nice to give my body a rest I think I will return to the gym but also keep my walks also 👍🏻
i think a normal walk is even more beneficial than a brisk walk. it is about lowering cortisol. the faster you are the less benefit you get to lower cortisol. if you are much too fast then cortisol is even rising. focus on lowering cortisol. that is the important thing!!! you sound far to stressed to me.
Love to go for a walk but can't stand seeing bloody couples joggers etc which i can't stand and feel worse and depressed plus feeling out of breath sorry

Only with dogs that are well trained, don't try and trip people, don't jump up risking tearing clothes.
Currently in the middle of my 6 mile walk while listening to you. There’s such peace and calmness in walking that i can’t describe, I just love being in the nature. Thank you, great advice and you speak the truth !

Going out for my first long walk in a couple of months. Thanks for inspiring me!
. . . am here to inspire !

You are not around death, only that place Hell is death. Many of those souls who are gone are in Heaven. 🤍🤍
I love this. You are able to communicate what it feels like when you are JUST WALKING, but you feel so alive, and life is worth living!
I have an early walk by the Devon coast early each morning before breakfast. No distractions. I walk for a good hour, fast ish! I love it! Thank you for your video. I've just subscribed to your channel.
The Best philosophy about walking I have ever heard
. . . happy to share !
He is a great motivator. He must not be talking while walking, taking away the concentration and momentem of the strike of the movement😔

I love to pray when I walk ‘ like the holy rosary ‘ a great combination

I have walked 36 miles in the last 3 Days, i am 60years old, and normally walk 50 plus miles every week.
Great going sir..stay fit

Thanks for the inspiration and thoughts Ralfy
I haven't hit the gym for a while but I've always been avid walker. I really liked this clip.
Thanks for the inspiration! I started walking daily a month ago and will increase my distance/time. I'm 78 age.
. . . go for it and feel the energy !
I wish my parents understood the benefits of walking, or, for a start, the benefits of moving from the sofa once in a while ;-) Cheers.
More videos on location ralfy! The real non-chillfiltered quality we love!
Thank you. Good talk. Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

. . . with the natural world we tend to know where the danger is, in the artificial world, it is fed to us invisibly
What a beautiful place to walk!! I would thoroughly enjoy riding my bike down that path you're taking. Sometimes i take nice deep breaths to enjoy the slightly polluted air of Houston 😂
