I believe the most likely scenario is that he wanted to play bad enough that it hurt him to be redshirted, especially after all the criticism and poor play of Husker receivers. I believe he can be convinced to stay in the same way Jamari Butler was convinced to stay. He appeared to have put on a lot of muscle in the off-season and his injury came at a terrible time but the fact he wasn't really put in in any of the games was concerning. More could be going on than what has been told to us and could be more than a playing time issue.

What went wrong is this coaching staff sucks. I pretty much lost faith in Rhule after UCLA and this news plus the fact they wasted Carter Nelson’s first season on kickoffs proves to me they don’t know what they’re doing.

@@Levi-tm4gl i completely understand you. But I see certain improvements that haven't yet turned into wins yet . Play calling is now better and should keep improving, penalties are better than last year, turnovers are better than last year, kicking game is better now, recruiting is getting better despite our record , coaching staff has just gotten better. Nebraska is slowly improving.

Thanks for the update Connor, you know the ole saying, usually where there’s smoke there’s fire, don’t like seeing a homegrown kid leave, but with the era of the portal, unfortunately that’s today’s world. I remember being shocked by Earnest Hausmann another local kid transferring to Michigan, cause he was going to be a beast, and the Huskers moved on. There’s so many factors the come into play that we never hear of. One thing that I’m not fond of, is teams tampering with players, not saying that’s happening, but ya know it goes on. Whatever the truth is we’ll have to accept it, move forward, no offense to anyone, but the program has bigger troubles right now than a player leaving. Keep up the great work young man…GBR🌽🏈🌽

Some food for thought. In the age of the tranfer portal, can we really miss a player's potential impact? More and more I'm getting the sense that "use it or loose it" is going to be the mindset of any player considered high talent regardless of actual playability. I do think lack of development has played a role here, but I'm also seeing a major shift in what a college football player is away from amateur athlete to sub-pro athlete which would definitely increase pressure on players and coaches to produce in that 4-5 year window.

    How about this:
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Nebraska cornerback Tommi Hill will not play on Saturday when the Huskers host Wisconsin, according to head coach Matt Rhule. Hill is also expected to miss the regular season finale at Iowa. Hill has been slowed by a nagging foot injury for most of this year which has slowed him down. Rhule said, “When you’re a guy who relies on your speed, it’s tough.
Rhule noted that Hill’s injury is unfortunate, but that he has better days ahead. “He’s been invited to the Senior Bowl,” Rhule said. “Maybe he’ll be ready for bowl practice.”
Rhule said Hill has only be able practice at 50-percent health after playing in each of the Huskers’ last two games.
Hill has 21 tackles this season. He has one interception, which he returned for a touchdown, during Nebraska’s Week 2 win over Colorado.

This is one of those situations where we don't know what to believe and we really won't know how good Malachi was or wasn't until he goes to another school. This coaching staff has been an utter embarrassment when it comes to talent evaluation so we just won't know until the kid plays for another staff.
