Yes, SMU is one of my darkhorse picks to win the ACC this season... They return Preston Stone at QB, the offensive line returns... Defense is solid .. Schedule is solid... 2. California... They have a chance to be surprise team in ACC with a favorable schedule... 3. Stanford Enough said on the Cardinal they have a long way to go in Troy Taylor's second season...
SMU can match up at skill positions. Stone is probably one of the best QBs in the conference. The only questions are OL and DL, can these positions match up? If so, look out because this team scores in bunches.
Fully agree. They have what it takes to immediately contend in the ACC. And have a very favorable schedule to work with too. Offense is elite and the defense is severely underrated. Going to be a fun team to watch!
As an SMU Fan I’m thinking the opposite. That’s the usual case for G5 Schools but SMU already had a pretty good line then went and got Several P5 lineman. But their offense struggled against every p5 opponent due to there Rb being loose with the football, Preston Stone didn’t play as confident with p5 coverages and was hesitant. They lost several corners and the corners they do have are small I’m not sure they can compete against big receivers
Lots of potential with this team! I truly believe they’ll be well above .500 this year. Tons of talent and a solid coach too. The future is looking very bright, especially with the new conference and all the money they’re pouring into the program!
As an SMU fan, my expectations are 6 or 7 wins, and we dont get war-crimed By FSU. I'd put our Starters up against anyone, but even with the transfers I'm not sure we have quality ACC depth. I think we hang FSU and Louisville through 3 quarters before the pull away when our 1s and 2s are gassed. See SMU vs OU last year as an example.
Valid reasoning and expectations. I will say Lashlee loaded up on P4 transfers on both the OL and DL so I think they could matchup better in the trenches than expected if the transfers gel together. Their history against P4 opponents is concerning though (all 3 losses last year were to P4 teams and all by at least 2 possessions) but I do think with a favorable schedule they can make some noise this year.
SMU is going to lose at home to BYU, TCU, FSU, lose on the road to Louisville and Duke. So that’s five losses there. If they win the rest, they go 7-5 but 5-7 or 6-6 or 4-8 at worst are real possibilities. Stanford will go 6-6 or 7-5 and Cal will go 7-5 or 8-4. I believe both of those schools are far better and more prepared than SMU to be competitive and successful in the first two years of ACC membership. The only way SMU pulls off an 8-4 mark is getting a win over either BYU or TCU or not stumble at Duke or stumble in final game against Cal at home in Highland Park and Frisco Texas; which is not Dallas but whatever.
lol no- only reason they might do okay is because their schedule is easy. SMU is gonna get thrashed. It’s truly a G5 team & program with a tiny alumni base. It’s the 6-7th brand in its own city of Dallas, in order of alumni and brand in Dallas. 1. Texas 2. Texas Tech 3. Oklahoma 4. A&M 5. Baylor 6. TCU 7. SMU. People in Texas know this. The media tried to hype SMU last year but people outside of Texas don’t realize how much of a non-factor SMU is in Texas. The ACC as a whole is extremely weak. The Big 12 is wayyyyy stronger. Without FSU and Clemson in the ACC the bjg 12 will be making $10million + more per team. ACC will collapse. The brands are too small when the FSU and Clemson leave.
The Big 12 is horribly overrated in football and basketball. Georgia exposed TCU and the Big 12 in football. And the Big East is far better than the Big 12 in basketball (the Big East has four recent NC’s and seven NC’s since 1999).

Go Mustangs! I just hope we’re at or above .500 in the conference. But the sky is the limit. We have so much long term optimism.

100 percent agree on the order for these newcomers in the ACC.

You’re in for a rude awakening.

In Dallas area, only a&m and UT are ahead of SMU. The alumni is tiny but rich enough.
SMU boutta give the ACC the death penalty
What’s boutta?
