Though not an historian myself, I have increasingly been intrigued by world history as a rear-view tool to navigate while walking backwards into the future, and for adding insight into human nature in general. I'm pleased to hear those same contextualizations underlying your conversations. This, though far beyond my existing knowledge of Irish history, would make a good addition to my favorite history trilogy ... Chomsky and Herman's ''Manufacturing Consent" and Howard Zinn's ''A People's History'' for America ... and 'Invented Traditions of Modern Japan'' (Where I live), edited by Stephen Vlastos (a series of academic essays closer to the detail I hear in this discussion). Now semi-retired from a Japanese college (English Communication) and teaching in public schools of West Tokyo, here too, much of 'institutionally approved' and over-simplified history text is just the story decided by current winners - propaganda in the same way that Big Tech is censoring and re-writing history through social media. How future generations will view the history of this current ... uh ... 'pandemic' will not be kind. This is a fascinating talk, partially because of the passion and details in the discussion ... but also because like many Americans, I can trace some of my ancestry (about 1/4) to Ireland.
