Togo lead Seppala across the froze Bearing Straight cutting a full day of the Serum Run. Balto ran the last 55 miles Gunnar Kaasen through a blinding blizzard all by smelling the trail!! Balto, Togo, Blackie, Fritz were ALL heros. There record still stands and will never be broken as there is no need to push dogs that hard.
Togo & Balto & ALL 20 Lead Dogs, ALL Canine Team Members, ALL 20 mushers PLUS everyone who worked to acquire the serum and arrange the journey are ALL heroes. It would have been sooo easy to just give up and let the disease ravage that Alaskan community . . . but the organizers, who proved themselves to be genuine LEADERS, pressed on. WISHING ALL HEALTH, JOY, SAFETY and PEACE IN THE NEW YEAR OF 2018.
Togo (1913 - December 5, 1929) was the lead sled dog of Leonhard Seppala and his dog sled team in the 1925 serum run to Nome across central and northern Alaska. He ran over 250 miles (400 km), while Balto, along with other sled dogs, ran an average of around 30 miles (48 km)
@Yoshiskyfan Do you possibly mean the book "The Cruelest Miles"? That's the book I'm reading. To be honest, I think all the dogs and men who took part in the serum run should have gotten credit for their role in getting the serum to Nome.
Togo and Balto are both heroes, but Togo is a true legend. Togo lead the dogs alone while Balto had another lead dog which is Fox but the reported didnt mention him bec the reader might think its a real fox. Togo run 256 miles and the hardest. They crossed the iced sea that cracks. Balto runs only 55 miles.
These are really great videos of the antitoxin serum delivery to Nome by dog sled. I also wouldn't mind seeing the portion of the run that was made by train to as far as the rail line went, if any such videos are presently in existence. I realize the railroad portion of the run was not the challenge the sled team portion was, but I am somewhat of a train buff and I think it would also be interesting.
I KNOW RIGHT!! I have been saying that for a year now ever since I got the Togo book and people don't believe people like us. When he was a puppy, he got bite on the ear and he has a little pice of his ear bit off. And he was put to sleep because he could not see because of the races he raced in!
Actually it was Balto that led his team through whiteout conditions in the dark in 80 mph winds and crossed over the 600 ft Topkok Mountain. Togo led his team across the 20 mile path across the frozen sea to save time and also crossed Little McKinley Mountain, which was 1500 ft high. Answer me this: Togo was considered a hero because he ran the longest, so if Seppala decided not to cross that 20 mile shortcut and travel an even longer distance, would Togo be considered more of a hero?
Good day to all. I recognize that TOGO has been, unfairly, deprived of his rightful share of the credit. Maybe his statue should be moved from Seward Park to Central Park and placed right next to Balto. After all, Balto only had the opportunity to save the team from going into the Topkok River because TOGO saved them first, getting the team across the jagged ice of Norton Sound before it broke up.Togo, it was said, had an uncanny ability to anticipate his musher's commands before they were given. TOGO logged the most miles. Maybe future editions of the Balto movie will show Togo's story and have his team handing the serum off to "Steele." In reality, we know CREDIT IS DUE FOR 20 TEAMS; 20 MUSHERS, 20 LEAD DOGS, 120+ TEAM DOGS, the TRAIN CREW ON THE SPECIAL TRIP TO NENANA, All the other people who did their part to organize and carry out the mercy mission. Best Wishes to ALL.

Every dog in the serum run, from Balto to Togo to Blackie, was a hero in my opinion. You will live on forever

Both of them were hero’s. In fact, ALL of them were here’s. End of story.

Heroism is the defining characteristic of all dogs. Great video.
TOGO! And Balto!
***** yes! Togo ran the longest and the most hazardous part of the race, but since Balto was the last in the line he unfairly got the credits
+GamerWolfLife ikr! I hate the people that lied I read a book the musher I think took Togo's miles
+GamerWolfLife my Siberian Husky is named Togo

@120alaska That is so true! All the dogs were heroes! I love this story and I love hearing about the dogs.

Togo is my hero. He did the most but did not get the most credit.

Togo lived a long life and died when he was 16.

Togo just went further in my opinion because I think the obsticles balto faced were much more dangerous and difficult to overcome
