- Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre challenged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the Liberals’ housing strategy during question period on Tuesday, targeting the Housing Accelerator Fund in particular.
“We see the Conservative leader's hypocrisy on full display,” Trudeau said, claiming that the Opposition leader has been delaying a debate on a Conservative housing proposal. “His clear lack of ambition on housing is partly how we ended up here in the first place.”
Poilievre responded by saying that, “When I was housing minister, we built 200,000 homes in one year and mortgage payments were half of what they are today. Fast forward to present, the Prime Minister has given a half billion dollars to Toronto City Hall to jack up new taxes on home building.”
Trudeau replied by saying the Conservative Leader was "simply all slogans and no answers.”

That’s ALOT of money comparatively speaking… now it’s up to $2000! That even more insane! I don’t see how average folk handle it considering that real wages have stagnated in Canada since 2017. You guys must really be hurting right now. I can’t imagine the stress of finding out where that money is going to come from.

Housing has been an issue since the 90s. This isn't new. Housing is also provincial jurisdiction. It is your Premier's job to build more houses and keep it in sync with population growth.

The bottom line is that; when Pierre Poilievre was the Housing Minister, there was very little need for government to be in the business of building homes. When Poilievre was Housing Minister, Canada was not accepting over One Million new immigrants per year into Canada that needed housing. When Poilievre was Housing Minister developers were building home with far less red tape and bureaucracy, labour costs and building material costs and land were a fraction of what they are today. When Poilievre was Housing Minister, it was far easier for young Canadians to save a down payment to purchase their first home. The difference between then and now is nine years of Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party.

Yeah and what was the population to housing ratio then as if mass immigration is irrelevant and why did Trudeau delay funding two years during the pandemic so building was halted? I don't doubt things were not perfect with the Conservatives also because I went to the occupy Vancouver protests in 2011 and people were already starting to complain about cost of living then but Trudeau lied and promised to improve things to get elected and he didn't keep his promises and things have gotten worse.
There were lots of houses to buy but no one could afford them because the economy was dead and no jobs. Conservatives free trade sent corporations to cheap wage countries. They killed out industries to ill the unions. They instead sold our resources for us to buy back. They invested nothing in affordable housing. Bringing the immigrants to bring back corporations and a lot of immigrant wealth to invert is what got us out of the dead end. Decades of Conservative policies left us no other choice. We have a strong economy but record corporate profits are causing inflation to continue. Immigrants pool their money to buy a house. Canadian families can't wait to get away from each other and their is no more inheritance wealth.

Millionaire Pierre didn't have any answers to the facts presented about his record on housing. PP voted 3X against building affordable housing. When he was housing minister - he built zero new apartments, zero new housing co-op's, and built only 6 affordable housing units in all of Canada. He cut 97% off the federal affordable housing initiative and as a result, the Canadian private sector built fewer new homes than any year under Trudeau.
Meanwhile PP has a real estate portfolio worth an estimated $10 million, with multiple properties located in Ontario, Alberta; and BC. He is totally out of touch with working Canadians. The guy has publicly stated at least 4X that electricians capture electricity from lightning! Totally unfit to be PM!

Developers left the biz after 2008 in droves. The real estate crash wasn’t a surprise, they were all warned. Both parties have failed since the sixties if you look at history. The GDP is better than a decade ago. But corporations expect to profit with very little civic responsibility

This was about housing and both parties failed. Conservatives were a negative influence, their preference was for fast tracking mining and resources which didn’t pan out nationally, nor for Harper’s stronghold Alberta. Btw look at the GDP since 1960. Look at trade and the GST and the loonie. It’s very telling as to why the federal govt kept out of public housing for five decades and expected province and municipalities to pay

So, let me get this straight: Pierre's plan is to keep taxes on apartments at 6% (GST), whereas Trudeau's plan has already increased taxes across the board by 20% on new construction?
Furthermore, Pierre's plan doesn't create new Bureaucracy and taxes but leverages existing ones (based on Trudeau referring to it as GST)?
I get that they're both politically bickering, but just how ignorant does Trudeau think his opponents are that he tries to sell that a 6% GST on apartments is somehow worse than 20% taxes on every new build on top of the already existing build taxes?

I second that people were happy back then they worked hard earned an honest paycheck. Friday would come they would come home open a cold one maybe get together with their buddies and have a cold one as well and maybe have a barbecue get some steaks on. Great times back then now they can’t even do that because a steak is to expensive or they have no job no home.

Immediate action must be taken, we are already doomed. Current housing cannot accommodate this huge number of expatriates. I am literally stuck where I live now and there is no glimmer of hope that things will change for the better soon. Perhaps he is intentionally creating a new crisis to target a new electoral base, namely property owners whose real estate prices doubled overnight. I cannot find enough words to describe the happiness of the landlady where I live in these difficult circumstances. My landlady has two properties and raised the rent by four percent this year.
