The information you gave was pretty much on the ball. You did however neglect to mention that in fact, almost all distilleries in Scotland (as well as Ireland, USA and Canada) water down their new-make-spirit before filling the casks. New Make Spirit will come off the stills at about 70% abv. It is then watered down to typical abv levels of 63.5% abv or 64% abv. Filling the casks at the same abv not only simplifies the calculation of Excise Duties but also better enables the warehouse to keep track of the Angel's Share. The other thing to be aware of is that, as you mentioned, unless the release is Cask Strength and Single Cask, the bottled Cask Strength abv of that batch will be the measured alcohol level in the marriage vat before that batch of casks is bottled. That's how you get a standard abv for the entire batch.
I recently emailed Glenfarclas about what casks they use for the 105. They were really cool about it and shared the entire break down which was exclusively sherry cask. The reason it may taste like there is bourbon cask in there is because they use some third a d fourth fill casks which don’t have a lot of sherry flavour to give. Cheers.
Daniel and Rex from Whisk(e)y Vault mentioned you in one of their videos and I'm glad I found you! Excellent info and love your production skills! (you must be a teacher--loved the Spanish/English burning ships analogy). Cheers!
Great video, great whiskies, I've tried them all. Here's a few more Cask Strength I can recomend...Glengoyne Teapot Dram...Glenallachie 10yo Cask Strength...Tamdhu Batch Strength..Glengoyne Cask Strength...Killkerran 8yo Cask Strength (2018 edition bourboncask and 2019 edition olorosso cask)..BenRiach Cask Strength Unpeated...Laphroaig 10yo Cask Strength. All of them are fantastic drams. Cheers
Great channel Phil, i'm so glad to have joined whilst your channel is in the growing phase, as i am sure if you continue the way you are going, you will get the numbers you need to help pay the bills "somewhat" that aside i keep fading off the whisky love boat but always come back and try again and i am finding your content great for my return to whisky. I am 53 from the UK and currently on lockdown and it's nice to have a channel that makes me feel as if i am out with other whisky friends (don't have any real one's lol). Oh and i love your intro, it's one of the few i never skip. I know you worked in the video/photo/advertising industry and it shows, anyway Slàinte Mhath to you and all your followers.
Thanks for your generous comment Gaz! Glad you could have a dram along side the video with me and grateful you found the videos helpful. I hope you will be able to get out again and share a whisky with your new knowledge after the lockdown. Cheers 🥃
It’s the independent bottlers that work in this area so well. Douglas Laing and all sorts of top guys like North Star ⭐️ and Cadenhead (Mitchell family) specialise in this area and you get access to the distilleries “source” spirit which is often not available. Enjoy your videos Phil 👍👍 Keep up the good work
Great selection, with the exception of 105, purchased a 1L because all the hype & ended up giving it away. Octomore is phenomenal! I would of added all the below, easily available options: Laphroig 10 Cask Strength, Ardbeg Uigendail & Corryvreckan Cragganmore 12yo 2019 Special Release Talisker 8yo Cask Strength
Good suggestions there Clinton! True, as I got down the bottle of the 105 I did notice it was holding up against some of the others when I did a side by side comparison.
I'm loving your content. This was fun and showed some of your personality and sense of humor-- all good. Now that I'm hooked I'll have to go back and catch up on what you posted over the last year. Sometimes the independent bottlers have single cask bottled at cask strength that is a good value and offering some not available from the distillery. I think the extra flavor is worth the extra cost.
Fantastic video Phil! Was chatting to a friend about Cask strength and forwarded this video as better as explaining it then I could. Keep up the fantastic content, great going back through them.
Fair play mate, I never knew this at the age of 61. I have drank my fair share of single malts and enjoy them. So on the back of this I bought my first cask strength Laphroaig 10yrs batch 10. I had it last night, oh fucking yes. Thank you, now after a Springbank 12 but having a prob locating one.
@@FirstPhilWhisky For you're info they are on batch 13 now, so it seems laphroaig are making this a regular treat. Its selling for £73.00 in Uk. Deanston 12 yr is a great drink highly rate it. Springbank as rare as rocking horse shit over here in blighty but I have a 10 yr old which I'm taking my time with.
When Roy is impressed you gotta be happy 😃 Half my whisky 🥃 collection has been based on your recycling reviews, and I’ve secured all the current Flora and Faunas just to be able to say “If Roy from Aquavitae ever made it to Margaret River, Western Australia 🇦🇺 he’d be pleased 😉😉...” Love your channel 👌👌
I've learned a great deal. Thank you so very much. As for those burning ships in the English Channel, I want everyone to know that most of those burning ships were Spanish! Cheers!
Sometimes in 15 ml of whiskey I add 3 ml of water, and the effect is very interesting, the water atoms in contact with the alcohol strength is very complex and release more aromas and palate will be more well balanced…it depends as well what’s cascs we have been using since
Agreed on the Arran 12. I actually preferred it to the 14. Sadly, its no longer part of the core range and stocks here in Auckland are scarce, so don't wait to restock if you love it.
I stumbled upon your channel and I really enjoy the content so far. Other cask strengths that you might want to try are Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Ardbeg Uigeadail. I like to compare the two as they came from the same Distillery. Cheers!
hart brothers, independent bottler has some great cask strength bottlings.... and from all different distilleries. I have the Dalmore 11 sherry butt, best Dalmore iv ever had!
A few weeks ago I bought the Glengoyne Cask strength batch no. 6. And currently its one of my favourites; nicely balanced and tasting notes of banana! Thanks for the nice video!
G'day Phil, Only come across your vids the last day or so... This is the first time I've ever commented on youtube. Great stuff mate. Aberlour was my first C.S. , then the 105 ... Have you tried the Glengoyne C.S. ? All Very nice. Across the ditch , down here in Geelong Victoria I have to look towards Melbourne for the 'non mainstream' stuff. Any Springbank is so hard to get let alone price heavy as with most whiskys here in Aus. Recently grabbed a Tamdhu Batch strength (looking forward to cracking) Lastly... I'm too scared to open my Octomore 7.1 ha ha ! Have you seen what it's going for now ?? Keep the vids going lad. OO ROO AL
Do you ever try Irish whiskey? There a bigger, tastier world of whiskey outside of Scotland and I can recommend a wonderful taste experience. Love to see you try out a few! Can suggest Yellow Spot, Red Spot, Knappogue Castle 14 year old, Writers Tears Double Oak......and many more
Good suggestions! Yeah it's more a budget thing. Really keen to add more international whisky to my shelf in 2021. Especially Irish and Indian whiskies.
Price ranges vary for good Irish. We now have 32 distilleries at the last count producing a wide variety of quality. The ones I mentioned were some of my favorites. The Green Spot is the cheaper of Mitchell & Sons brands. Red, Yellow and Green (I believe a new Blue Spot has been added!). They are all excellent whiskies in their own right. Much fuller flavors in the Red and Yellow. Red has deep flavors from sherry casks, Yellow is quite sweet but plenty of spicy notes. The Writers Tears are a lovely original whiskey with some lovely examples. They are a new company but produce a quality product. Not sure how much they export but here is their website www.walshwhiskey.com. I recommend Irish whiskey not just as an Irishman but as someone who loves a good whiskey! Keep up the good work your videos are enjoyable.

Yeah thought so too. I thought the screen was distracting, so turned the brightness down. Probably a bit much I guess. Otherwise will need another light.
Hi Phil, how can I recognize the cask strength whisky from the label? Is it specially marked like "cask strength"? Or should I just recognize the abv/ proof? Many thanks. Love your vids xx
Hopefully the distillers will have ‘Cask Strength’ on the label as it does cost them more, so makes sense they let you know. Otherwise usually 55% + abv will be heading in the direction of cask strength. Generally, if you see a whisky ~40%, it won’t be cask strength.
I got it for $79.99 nzd for 1 litre. That was on special though. Checking the same online shop (whisky&more) it’s $89 right now. I think we must have less tax on spirits that you guys.
Yeah i watched it. It was good, I just found it a bit weird that the hero of the story steals whisky from a distillery and that was meant to be a good thing.
If I was having a rough shift; a quick nosing of the Octomore 9.3 would perk me right up. I once managed to sell a round of them to a group of tourists by describing it as 'like getting fisted by Frazzles'. Yeah I'm cool, I know it. 😎
