This is a testament to how accessible this game is for blind/visually impaired contestants. His only accommodations were a Braille card containing the categories, an auditory signal for when the contestants could buzz in, no visual clues (which often happens in episodes without blind/visually impaired contestants as well), and a Braille keyboard to input his Final Jeopardy! response and wager.
Being someone with a visual disability myself, I completely understand where he’s coming from! Where I am able to see some, I use my ears more than my eyes these days!! I have never seen his episodes, but I am going to see if I can dig them up! 👍🏽👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
What's even more impressive is how much he knows despite not being able to read as quickly or easily as a person with sight. Think about how much of what we know comes from reading, then imagine you couldn't see anymore. Eddie is truly one of the Jeopardy! greats.
Well, you also have to consider that he's had years to adapt. I haven't seen his episodes, but I wouldn't to be surprised if he were able to read faster than some people with sight.
Plus he's at a considerable disadvantage since he doesn't see the visual cue that the buzzer is activated, it wasnt until the ultimate T of C that they added the "ping" noise to help him.
@@chocolateangel8743 read up on jeopardy "buzzer theory". Basically once the clue is read, a tech flips a switch to turn the buzzers on, the contestant knows this by a light that comes on around the gameboard (you don't see this on the air). If you buzz too early it locks you out for a fraction of a second, buzz too late and your opponents could beat you to it. It's all about timing. Eddie never had the luxury of seeing the light so he was literally shooting blind (sorry for the lack of a better expression). When he came back for the ultimate T of C since the level of competition was tougher they added a "ping" noise that went off at the same time as the light to help him a little.

I was 9 years old and when I first watched Eddie Timanus live in 2000, I didn't think he would have won a single game. ...Little did I know that guy became my favorite jeopardy contestant ever.
I really wish these episodes could be found somewhere. I'm totally blind myself and I kind of want to see if anything is different for those contestants. Call it trying to knock as many nerves out of the equation in the future as possible
I somewhat remember that guy's run. I was impressed that he could play Jeopardy! without seeing the clues. I guess if you know the question and can hit the button quickly, you can do anything.
What's even more amazing is the fact of not having the advantage of the light the others had as to when to ring in, in addition to the rest of it. So he was handicapped several ways when playing.
It's so weird to think that I was 9 when he was first on Jeopardy, and I've remembered him all these years. So glad to hear that he's still doing well.

If they ever choose to have another all-time greats series like the one they did at the beginning of this year, they need to include him.
I think other than the Braille cards, he did have an earpiece that chimed when the board light went off, which allowed him to use his signalling button like the other contestants.
Eddie, you are disabled but able to rock. You made history as the first disabled person to appear on Jeopardy. I read in Alex’s book that he asked Eddie if he had any concern about the two cars and Eddie said the only problem is that he can only use one at a time. Eddie has a good sense of humor.
Due to Eddie Timanus being blind, there are some changes in accommodation after passing the test. Eddie was given a card with the categories in Braille for each round & he was given a keyboard to type his response and wager in the Final Jeopardy round.
In 1999 Alex Trebek is more nervous about Eddie Timanus they gave him a card as you all know that contains all the categories in braille so he need to use his memory only to figure which clues in the categories that they used up.
He probably gave one to his mother, who was a J! contestant in fall 1991. Or probably sold them although it's very tough to convert some gauges along with other well marked controls into braille.
It’s really sad that Eddie and all blind people aren’t able to see the person they marry, or their parents, or their own kids. Never take your eyes for granted. Thank God that he gave you sight.
Why are we thanking God when he took this man's sight? It's pretty selfish, don't you think? Thank you God for giving me sight, I know you took the sight of other people but I'm alright and that's all that matters to me. Amen.
@@thezombiecreeperI think God punishing humans born today for a crime committed by other humans thousands of years ago just comes across as a bit racist.
