Back before I left a lot of my hearing over in Vietnam back in 1970-71, Pioneer was my dream receiver, I had a PL-50 turntable, a Teac reel to reel and a small receiver by Akai. Left them with my hearing in Nam as I didn't realize I could ship them home when my tour of duty was up. Never did get them replaced, well now I have an old SONY receiver and a newer Pioneer turntable, of course the reel to reel was but a memory, I still have an Old Hitchi combo unit with cassette and 8 track as well as a BSR turntable but I haven't had it plugged in for years, I doubt it works any more, same setup as on Young Sheldon in their living room. For out in the boonies, I had a Hitchi AM/FM/Cassette recorder, it was stolen over there but I found the same model for sale out of Florida, a couple caps and a bit of gluing of mounts and she is back in working order. Strange, I had knocked mine off a 45 foot guard tower. over there, it landed in the sand but did suffer some damage, this unit has the same damage. Perhaps I bought my old machine back from the thieves kids or now days grand kids...

so brilliant of you to attach the plate before soldering in the pot. you are a true craftsman! i'm working on readers digest brand 8-track recorder am-fm stereo with no fm and saw something weird: picture an inductance coil with no shield nor core (also no threads for a core) just a bobbin with some windings on it. its at the beginning of the fm tuning circuit. 73's to you

I bought a hakko cause one came up locally for basically free. Im amazed at how efficient and through it is at removing solder. I would never pay full price for one, but it is better for me as an intermediate amp tech to prevent tearing or lifting traces.

AF board on the SX-828 I've just serviced chocked full of bad caps and a temperamental low cut switch. That 1000uf 10V on the PSU board was also really bad. Sounds reasonably good up to about 50% volume then starts to wash out. The heatsinks on the PSU board also needed attention as well as servicing the contacts on the A speaker block. That covers the customers budget and gives them a relatively decent piece of equipment back so I won't investigate the amp module on this occasion.

SG9800 and similar switches on Pioneers broke with no help from Caig products. I suggest you contact Caig, they're very responsive, and they'll assure you their products are plastic safe, also OK for carbon pots, an unfounded rumor that's been making the rounds.

I used a spray cleaner on a tape deck sliding switch once and it kind of crystallized the plastic and it shattered like glass. I don’t remember which cleaner it was now. It was a long time ago.

Brill video, im having a proper dilemma here lol, my sony str-db940 mainboard is completely full of cracked solder, had to take the mainboard out and refow the lot, ive used 50gramms of solder so far! thats 10 quids worth of solder, usually an ordinary lead pencil will revive those pot traces

Love those black face Pioneers!, Would have loved to have had that when it was new at 10 years old, But had to settle for a GE Wildcat😂😂

JP, what kind of Kester solder do you use? Great video, cannot wait to see the series.

I’m glad you put this one up. I have an 828 and not kidding listening to turntable last night thru headphones and suddenly no sound thru either channel or thru radio. All lights on just no sound. I don’t have speakers. The left side has been cutting out for a long time now and by turning balance all the way to that side I could pop the sound back on. What do you think it could be Jordon? Love your channel btw.

If you hear a physical click from the machine when this happens its entering protection mode. Power supply, amp or protection fault.
If not, then oxidized switches can cause it, particularly the tape monitor and tone switches

@@JordanPier did not hear a click at all just from music to silence as I was listening to a record. So using the deoxit spray will take care of it?

@@tomdemaline8869 the unit has to be disassembled. The contact cleaner needs to get inside switches and controls.
I would verify its a switch by working them and see if the sound comes back first

@@JordanPier I looked at shipping this to you it would be about 60-80 with FedEx ground. There just isn’t anyone near me that works on vintage equipment a few claim too but it’s hit and miss with those shops. What do you charge to completely service this unit I realize any parts would be more

Camera is good, no worries ! Have a similar (simpler) Model that gave up, nice to get some disassembly hints.. too bad the pot disintegrated, I guess these are hard to get ? Are there modern parts that would be a good replacement ?? (Don't have a spare Amp to butcher^^)

People will jam the straw from the de-oxit can into the pot in an attempt to 'fix' a scratchy volume control

You have done well getting the pots and switches out, ive had my share of horrible designs that are not nice to service. :-(
I used to use servisol switch cleaner but some people say it attacks plastic.
I take the switches apart and clean the dirty sliders with a fine abrasive rubber/grit block .
They are called gary abrasive blocks (for car paint finishing). not cheap though.
You will spit at me now as i end up coating the contacts with wd40 or light oil.
    i know im evil lol.
