- Ask expert guitar players or vintage enthusiasts about their desert island amplifier.
In many cases the reply will be: “Fender tweed Deluxe of the 1950's”, with the latest version 5E3, getting more consensus in particular.
In fact, these models are consistently ranked in the top 10 of the most legendary amplifiers.
We are giving a closer look at a 1953 5C3 version and a 1955 5E3 model; these two amplifiers will help us find out what’s the big deal with the vintage tweed Fender Deluxe amps!

Thank you!!
Very interresting show Bob. I am a big fan of those old school amps myself and to experiment those sounds i am about to make a Fender Tweed Deluxe 5E3 kit.
Best regards from Denmark :-)
Thank you so much for your kind words Carsten, good luck with your kit project!

really enjoyed this,Bob. Thank you!
Thank you for your kind feedback Steve, great to have you onboard!
Really cool to see a harp played through a 50's Deluxe. I only ever saw one video but he's playin g through an early 60's one. I suspected it might sound good so I bought a 5E3 kit (bought a year ago & still only about 75% finished building it). It was a bit of a crapshoot - some amps just howl with feedback for harp even at low volume. It sounded great in your video - and the harp player is killing it. Really interesting video
Thank you for your feedback Monto, I'm really happy that you enjoyed Mino's harp playing! I think you made a great choice, in my opinion those amplifiers are the best for harp, especially with a good old microphone. Good luck with the remaining 25%!
Bob... sei una rovina per noi!!! Tutti questi straordinari video pieni zeppi di informazioni precise, puntuali, appassionate e appassionanti... NON VA BENE!!! Male, molto male... La nostra "patologia" così PEGGIORA!!! Argh!!!
Grandissimo, come sempre!!!
Ha! Ha! Scusa Stefano, so che con la patologia della GAS non si scherza, ih! ih! Grazie delle tue gentili parole di apprezzamento!
Very informative!

to see another vintage version of the 5e3 look at the Dearmond R15.. It has a larger output transformer,, , a more moderate voltage with 330V on the first filter cap witha large 40 microfarad rating (i think a slightly different resistance on the OT and lower voltage allows for that large cap valur). The R15 has a smaller dropping resistor at 2.7K giving you 300V on the screens giving you less screen voltage drop under heavy loads, The R15 uses 0.047 coupling caps in the output stage instead of the larger 1M of the 5e3.
I have not seen the preamp of the R15 but the tremolo version of the amp has a 12ax7 in the preamp instead of the lower gain 12ay7 in the 5e3,, But the Dearmond uses 0.047 coupling caps in the preamp and has 350k pots instead of the 1M of the fender.. The 350k volume pots lowers the input gain of that 12ax7 first stage getting close to the value of the 12ay7 in the 5e3.
Thank you for the information Andres, that's interesting. In fact the 5E3 circuit is quite similar to that of many amps of its days... more on this subject in the next episode BTR#44.
A wonderful tutorial on the Fender ' Deluxe' amps. Very detailed. Great 'licks' and tone as well. Cin cin! 😊

EXCELLENT!!! ❤
Thank you for your kind feedback Curtis, I'm happy that you enjoyed the video!
Great video. I also love the accent. :)
Thank you so much Jimi, I'm flattered, great to have you onboard!
Well done video of both the development of the Tweed Deluxe and tones available. Nice to have a "review" video done with both clarity and passion for the subject. Thank you! One comment on the mushy 5E3 bass: it depends on the speaker being used and I prefer ceramic magnet speakers in 5E3s though the Italian Jensens generally have a wide, mushy bass so try something else. Vintage Oxford 12"s seem to work particularly well. Internally the V1 to V2 .1/400v coupling caps can be reduced in value. Try .047 though .022 may thin out the tone too much for some and use 600/630v polyester caps for correct tone.
Rick, thank you so much for such kind words and nice feedback! Also for the very interesting technical information. On my '58 Deluxe 5E3 I had an original vintage P12N made in Chicago and sounded stunning... until it lasted : ) Please feel free to browse among the other content of the channel.
@@BobsToneReview Both my 5E3s have the original speaker but of course the one I play has another speaker in it. You got an especially nice crisp tone out of your Les Paul if it was going through an alnico speaker. Take care
@@rickschiller thank you! My '54 VOS Reissue Les Paul is retrofitted with original vintage parts and P90's from 1956, so this definitely helps : )
Loved it, well done: in depth, informative and very enjoyable 👏👏👏 Can't wait for the next episode: hope to get some recommendations for vintage amps with killer tone at a decent price 😀 Grazie maestro 😊
Thank you for the feedback and the encouraging words Luca!
Great playing mate ! amazing tone.
I just did a cover for "The Wind Cries Mary" of Jimi Hendrix to this awesome amp - original
1954 Fender Tweed Deluxe in my channel - So much pleasure !
Thank you for such kind words Italifrach; the best compliments that a guitar player can receive : )
Compliments right back for your channel!
10:20 Leo Fender, never one to waste anything.
Great video once again. p.s. Quick! Hide that tweed before Bonamassa sees it!
Ha! Ha! Thank you for the nice words J, I'm happy to have you on board! And yes... Leo didn't throw anything away : )

There was that one time when he threw away those “Broadcaster” decals after he cut Fender off of them of course.

Grazie Antonio caro!
greetings,
very informative content, thanks for sharing.
fender has issued '57 custom deluxe, what's your take on this? why is this mentioned as 12 watt?
cheers
Hello Tamra, thank you for your kind comment, I'm happy that you enjoyed! I must admit that I never had the chance to try the '57 Custom Deluxe that I mentioned in the video. Some reissue amps sounds very nice but none I tried can compete by far with their original vintage counterparts from the 1950's and 60's... I would dare to assume that the '57 Custom Deluxe is no exception.
Through the years, different versions of the Deluxe circuit have different power ratings; I think the popular blackface and silverface versions are 22 Watts; earlier tweed models have lower power wattage.
Bella storia Bob.!!!!
Grazie Bacco, il prossimo episodio BTR#44 è tutto dedicato a te! ...No spoiling! : )

Sono curioso a manetta!!
Hey Bob - who is playing the organ laden instrumental music (21:41)? The fill in music in all your videos cook, but this one in particular really grabs me
Thank you Monto! That is a track by Earl Hooker.
@@BobsToneReview I've heard a lot of his stuff I liked, but none like that one. What's the name of the cut?
@@monto39 it's Off The Hook by Earl Hooker, happy that you enjoyed!
@@BobsToneReview BTW the new video on stereo pedalboard setup was a good one. It's out of the usual realm of vintage gear - but it'll probably end up having a really positive influence on my stage sound
@@monto39 Wow! Thank you! It's the very first comment that I receive about that video, I'm really happy that you like it!
I built a 5e3 clone that sounds great. It's not that hard to do.
Hello Jimi! Yes the 5E3 is one of the simplest tube amp circuits while being tonally impressive; therefore clones are very popular. Congratulations on your very nice amp!
@@BobsToneReview Thanks Bob. Keep the videos coming, they're great.
@@jimihendrix3143 Thank you so much for your encouraging words, great to have you onboard!
At 14:14 - WHO did you say "takes advantage of this feature...the most 5E3 addicted artist?" (cannot understand thru the accent). Thanks, nice descriptions and history info.
Hello Jojokeo, he is Neil Young. Please note that you can easily activate English subtitles, which I manually upload and are very accurate.
@@BobsToneReview Thanks for the quick reply. I know all about Neil & his love of the 5E3's. Just wanted to confirm. I've redesigned & built mine in the thumbnail photo 4 complete times - no longer a 5E3, but w/ a PP pot defeating neg feedback/Presence control and a high value Mid pot turned up re=creates the Tweed tone and feel when wanted. The transformers are over-rated so I've biased accordingly where I can also switch out the 6V6s to 5881 Tung Sol there to for larger venues or if increased headroom is wanted. Cheers my friend! (the long explanation is for the gear / tone hounds out there like us 🙂)
@@jojokeo thank you for the compelling explanation! Great to have you on board. Please feel free to browse among the other content of the channel... there's plenty of amp-geek stuff 🙂 Please remember that you can always activate English subtitles to make things easier.
No offence intended Bob, British humour!.
Great Video I've subscribed
Thank you Simon, great to have you aboard : )
You say you did some upgrades to your R4 Les Paul. What did you do to it, and why, please Bob? Cheers, from Sputnik and Shane, here in Australia.
Hello Sputnik and Shane, thank you for getting in touch! Through the years I swapped nearly every part with its vintage original correspondent. Pickups are original soapbars from 1956. I put a nylon nut, vintage hardware, caps and so on. In fact the guitar itself it's about the only remaining part from the Gibson Custom Shop : )
I could say that it probably represents the closest you can get to a vintage original, besides the real deal. You might be interested to check out these videos:

As for "why", the tone improvement is unbelievable. Of course it still misses the sweetness of original woods from the 50's but it's a killer player for my live gigs.
Hold on isn't that Harry Enfield / Stavros
my desert island choice would be JTM 50 or JCM800 LOL
JTM 50 is an excellent choice as well Lordraptor!
I have built two JTM-50's.
Great circuit.
JCM800 is his perfect amp, and he watches a Fender Tweed video.
👍🇺🇲❤
Use Weber Classic Alnicos ... sound better than Jensens.
Weber speaker are fabulous... because they were modeled after vintage Jensen speakers.
In these amplifiers you can find the originals that the great Ted Weber strived to replicate.
@@BobsToneReview Yessir! Weber added a bit more bottom end!
Alnico is the best
I generally agree with you@@smoochie3331 but some people thinks that the worst alnico speaker is still better than the best ceramic speaker; which is a nonsense. In fact there are some really sweet sounding vintage speakers with ceramic magnets. Just think of the Celestion "Greenbacks" in old Marshalls, or Jensen C15N in blackface Vibroverbs or CTS 10" speakers in Vibrolux or Super Reverb amps.
