- HBO's Euphoria is an amazing look into the life of the modern american teenager. On top of that, it has a spectacular cast including Zendaya and Barbie Ferrara and a wardrobe that is seriously killer. In this video, we will detail the styles of Rue, Jules, Maddie, and Kat in order to shed light on their characters and why their clothing is so telling to the story.

I think another reason why rue was given a more ""masculine"" look in the show is to represent how she feels like she must act as kind of the "man of the house" due to her father's passing, she forces herself to stay strong and push past her addiction to be there for her sister and mother even when she is at her weakest
I think the shows hiting to rue being extremely childish and selfish before going to rehab in flashbacks you can really see how toxic she actually was. I don’t think she was protecting anybody at that time but she’s definitely grown a lot
also the lyrics in all for us says “father aint at home, no. gotta be a man” i think the song really encompasses her emotions in that moment

I would definitely have to disagree with the episode where Rue is being a detective as "light-hearted"... She is spiraling in mania and depression the whole time, was very dark
I totally agree. I think the juxtaposition between that and her usual depressed character was meant to be unsettling and concerning, rather than lighthearted.
I think he meant only the detective scene other part of the episode weren't light hearted as that one

I loved all the characters looks BUT I loved Rues style. As a girl with a more androgynous look it was refreshing. It was nice seeing female characters showing both masculine and feminine traits and style

Heidi also explained that in Cassie's case she dresses to impress and be accepted by the men she is currently with (McKay or Daniel). Now that they are no longer together she hopes to see Cassie dress for herself, reflecting who she is instead of what men want her to be.

Yeah I noticed that Cassie (and Lexi) have more classically feminine looks for their hair, makeup, and wardrobe. Basically Girl Next Door, a few tweaks can take them to different decades, or make them part of Archie Comics.

As a trans girl, the scene of Jules in her pink ATOMIC crop top and panties made me sob. I’ve never seen such honest but flattering representation of young adult trans women. That scene made me feel so much better about my body, I have such horrible genital dysphoria and it really really helped. It just shows how important representation really is.
Just reiterating what many of us know, but people who are trans deserve love, kindness, and most of all, acceptance. I hope we get more positive representation for all of the people who could use reassurance that others like them exist and are loved.

arina is ok it’s not meant to be body shaming. (Or maybe she is being asshole lol). But The reason models are all “toothpicks” is because they can kinda wear anything if that makes sense. Designers want to work with models who have “no curves” because their body won’t distract from the outfit. So it makes since that Zendaya can kinda wear anything because she has the model figure body type.

As some one who is in the professional realm of make-up, yes. I had been feeling the tides of change pulsing for a while, prior to Euphoria. I could see more people were starting to abandon the rigid multi-layered "insta-baddie" caked on flawless look in make up, to a more natural--yet creative and fun approach. The glossier crowd started adding more color to the eyes/funky eyeliners in the winter/spring of '19, and I feel like once Euphoria showcased creativity again into make-up, it was like a breathe of fresh air. And I am totally here for it, I love seeing creativity, expression and even dichotomy in make-up, as it should be. Make-up is fun and creative, if you wanna have a fresh face an bold eye, do it, if you want to be a bad bish, do it, experiment, have fun. I hope the new 20's brings in an era of self expression and creativity we haven't seen before in fashion, hair and make-up, we have the tools, lets use them!!

I have analyzed Euphoria so much and didn't catch that Jule's style changed during that police visit. Your so accurate. I wish you talked about their Halloween costumes as well because those were some iconic call backs.

Euphoria was a visual treat all around! It needs an Emmy or Golden Globe because not only did the looks SERVE, but they also had meaning / character behind them. Wasn’t just “oh this looks cute”, I love this show!!!

I love how maddie wears matching sets all the time. It's really her character to look very polished and put-together and a matching set with laser sharp eyeliner is a really well thought through costume decision

omg i appreciate so much the fact that people talk more about the looks and the make up in tv shows and cinema in general, it's actually so important for the plot
He’s always so informed and it’s so refreshing and interesting to see someone speak so eloquently on something they are obviously very passionate and knowledgeable about.
i absolutely love this analysis. another note on rue: as a masculine lesbian/tomboy myself, i'm so happy rue's fashion is more butch/androgynous and how her fashion embodies her as a person. not just because these characters are hard to come by, but bc her fashion is a part of her personality: she's quiet, modest, unique, true to herself, and ultimately - an outcast. no one else in the show dresses like her - it's part of why she feels alone/unseen, but it's also a visual signifier of her "otherness" and isolation from her peers, and a way she expresses a connection to herself and her dad

The makeup blew me away, they cleverly made that the staple of their show, without it having to be set in some crazy alt universe. Every look was mesmerizing to look at, and flattered every actress perfectly. Not to mention how well it played into the narrative of the show. Definitely the best show to come out of 2019 so far.

Agreed with mystery, I've seen this discussion in other places too, and I gotta say Kat is not confident, she has bravado. Nothing wrong with that (fake it til you make it) but please don't mistake that for some kind of confident stoicism.
It worries me how people do not see this.. and then call Kat confident, when her eyes and posture and everything scream worry about how other people perceive her, how her behaviour is so clearly "let me shut you down before you get a chance to reject me".
I think she IS NOT confident. She kinda pretend to be confident. That's like the rule: "fake it till u make it". She tried to be confident and sometimes she felt confident, but sometimes she lost this feeling. Especially in the season 2.

The Rue detective look makes me giggle because detectives do wear a harness like that specifically to conceal their gun holster on their upper body (which is then hidden by a jacket, or the 1940s Pulp Noir Trench coat). So the harness makes "sense" but what's funny about it is it looks odd because there is no gun holster. It's like they wanted the "look" of a classic detective, but then somehow decided halfway through the outfit that they couldn't have a gun involved.
Don’t forget that in Kat’s first “debut” look she wears a choker saying “kitty”, which as we know could easily be a reference to kittenkween. It’s almost alluding to the crossover between who she is in real life to who she most identifies with and portrays online.

Rues wardrobe is not only composed of her fathers clothes and is laid back so as to not draw attention to herself, but is also a way of inviting the audience, who may not always be or feel so out together , to connect with her immediately

Out of highschool for 10 years, went to a pretty good public school, and people were wearing with suuuuper low-cut jeans, short skirts, thongs showing, offensive t-shirts etc. However most people didn't dress that way, and perhaps some people were written up and I just didn't know about it.

Kat reminds me of great Greecian poets who deem women's article of clothing as different specific pieces of battle armor that is similar to what men wear to battle. She's ready to get down and she has probably used the time to style her clothes for the day as a warrior chooses their arsenal for battle.

I think you may have missed the fact that each characters signature lock is in the color red/burgundy and the color is symbolic of strength and courage which is why you find them wearing the color in self-empowerment scenes.

Rues red hoodie just reminded me of the one hoodie I wore when I went through a depressive episode for a few months...the very sight of my hoodie would bring back those memories of how I didnt care to the point that I would wear it everyday for weeks on end I felt that Rues trademark red hoodie made me connect with her and her struggling against depression and addiction and it was a signature look that could ne recognized by many who have been through that

It's so exciting to me to see a show that truly embraces fashion and makeup as crucial elements of the storyline and character development instead of just background info. Girls nowadays are really using makeup and clothing as tools for empowerment in a way that wasn't really done in previous generations (outside of counter-culture movements). We're using clothing and makeup to tell stories about ourselves and our bodies and it's really cool to me to see Euphoria acknowledging that. I really hope they get a second season because the fashion narrative alone is enough to make me want more, and that's aside from how much i'm addicted to the show from a psychological standpoint.

I want to buy all the eye crystals and glitters because of them! The reason why Rue where’s more masculine clothes is because they’re actually her dads clothes. This was revealed towards the end of the show where she puts on the burgundy hoodie after he dies.
I know the detective scene wasn't Rue in her actual everyday clothes, but rather a figment of her imagination, but I felt this was possibly her BEST look. I must have for myself.
I think rue wears less flashy clothes bc when ur addicted nothing matters except ur addiction so her mind constantly revolves around drugs
