  • Today we take a closer look at four Boss DS-1 style distortion pedals. The DS-1 is a fantastic pedal and deserves much more appreciation. There is, however, a positive aspect of the fact that the DS-1 is a sleeper. While guitarists around the world are busy emptying their wallets for a vintage Tube Screamer, a few lucky guys can take home a vintage DS-1 at an incredible price. Not bad!

    So guys, what's your favorite DS-1 style pedal?

    • @TenisDimants
      @TenisDimants 3 роки тому +4

      Had DS-1 and could not find any tones I like, compared it to BigMuff Pi on lower sustain, and kept the Muff for distortion. Got HotHead now few days ago and I love the tones, keep in mind Im also way better at playing and dialing in sounds so I wondered, until saw this video. Thank you. I also like the HotHead from your vid the best.

      Hot Head and an old 1980s DS-1. The old one is at the shop for repairs. It's falling apart! (kinda like the owner😆)

    I worked with an old Canaidian Vet that plays in a country band he gets radio play and has recorded in Nashville. He's an amazing fellow, he gave me an old massive Ride Cymbal and the Digitech Hothead. He said it was too much for him. I was really surprised at how great it sounded.

    The Hothead was my first ever pedal and I still think it’s awesome. I really love the DS1 but most of the modded versions just clean up the sound in a way I can’t exactly explain but I prefer. Plus it has was more gain and if it ever breaks it’s really cheap because people are scared off by “Digi”. Thank you so much for this thorough demo!

      Gotta love them. I have six of the Hothead, Digidelay era. I'm really into noise, so I have the DeathMetal, the Merzbow pedal. I think it's a clone, possibly modded, of the HM-2, the Turbo Flange has its sweet spots for drone shifting, the Grunge, for a laugh, it was cheap and it's fun to stack dirt, you can find new and exciting ways to destroy your speakers/ears/ relationships with neighbours. The MetalMachine, stick it in your send/return loop.

    The MXR is an absolute sleeper pedal. Best way to get the Keeley mod sound at a fraction of the price. If they said in the copy that it’s a clone, I’m sure they’d push a lot more of them.

    My first pedal ever was an MXR distortion plus my guitar teacher, Randy Rhoads, told me to buy. I still have it, but because the Hot Head has eq flexibility, after watching this vid, I bought one after finding one cheap. It will be interesting to compare the two. I have had two DS-1 pedals. I sold one and kept the one with better bass response, but I still thought it sounded lousy, and gave it away to some guy who had his rig stolen. Thank you for the vid. If I remember I will come back and comment on the comparison of the two pedals.

    Solid video thanks for the info - IMO having done a shootout with the Hot Head and DS1, the DS1 has more "plump screech" that can be dialed back with the tone and gain in the right spots, but the Hot Head always sounded to me more like a JCM800 80s style pedal vibe no matter how i tried to balance the EQ. And none of those things are bad, I just was not able to get a thick 90s sound out of the Hot Head, which is ultimately why I went with a Way Huge Russian Pickle

    Thanks. My favorite distortion is the DS-1 but sometimes I wish it had a bit more headroom. So essentially I'm looking for something that sounds just like a DS-1 with more headroom. Seems the hot head is worth a try.

    To run a ds -1 proper you need some amp volume. Youre amp runs low. If I dial the volume of my boss keely as loud as you do the amp is destroid. I run the volume at 9 a clock. Maby yours differs from the real keely pedal with blue led and sticker. Mine sound more open ‘Marshalls’ leaves the bass of the amp in tact and is very dinamic! But dinamic only if use not to Many pedals in the chain. Only a true bipass delay is best. A chain of 4 pedals ruins the dinamics.

    • @WeAsACompany
      @WeAsACompany  3 роки тому

      Thx for the comment. The amp is loud but we use an attenuator so that we can have tubes breakup at a lower volume. The pedals are not chained but into a loop switcher.

      Just want to say an only true bypass pedal setup will add a lot of capacitance, which will eventually lead to sounding like you rolled off the tone knob. You need a buffer bypass pedal at the beginning, there’s also nothing wrong with a well designed buffer bypass like Boss’s

    • @victoromarmunoztenorio3647
