I happen to KNOW Cornel West and to have read some of his books. I had discussions debates with him going all the way back to the 1980s when I was a student. West is NOT a "devoted Marxist," but does believe that Marx (like other philosophers) has significant insights as well as weak spots in his interpretation of the social world. Cornel West actually leans more toward Pragmatism and even Christian existentialism than to Marxism. I know this not only from taking with him, but also from reading some of his books and articles--which I am sure you have not done. (i've also written critical review essays on West which have been published). Furthermore, anyone who thinks Marxism and Nazism is the same shows profound ignorance both of history and of the major ideas influencing the world in the past 100--200 years. You view of things is so myopic and ignorant that it boggles the mind. I more informed than you are today when I was in high school.

The way he’s able to encapsulate so much into the simplest of sentences. Glad to be alive at the same time as this absolute chad of a man. Cornel's memories of writers and artists make me feel despair. I read and heard many of them years ago - Trilling, Bloom, Riesman, Frye, Erdman, Wilson, James Baldwin, Ella, Aretha, Malcolm et alia - and wonder if they've made any difference at all, then or now. The world seems ever more reactionary, ignorant, glib, heartless. I'm only thankful Cornel remembers them and does his best to pass their riches on to us and to the young. West is such an incredible speaker. You can tell that he is intelligent, but he doesn't put it in your face or use it as a way to get people to listen to him. His intellect is secondary to his speaking from the heart. Also, him touching on enthusiasm for voting for Sanders. He just gets it. So many of us voted for Biden/Harris not because we were enthusiastic about them but because we didn't want to see Trump win whereas his base is so incredibly for him. It's interesting to see this play out 3 years later...
