When a person dies whether righteous or unrighteous, he or she goes to hades also known as the Place of the Dead ( Matthew 16:18).
Hades is made up of paradise and Tartarus
The righteous dead stays in paradise to wait for final judgement
The unrighteous stays in Tartarus to wait for final judgement
