It’s not as much a kid’s movie as I think the first two were. Saying this moving is ENTIRELY a kid’s movie is saying KFP 2 was ENTIRELY a kids movie. Yes, it had a funny haha animated Kung Fu practicing panda and the villain was a British peacock, but the themes presented in that movie would go right over kid’s heads. Genocide, the rise of Dictatorship, Global Conquest, struggling with one’s identity, ethic cleansing (if in that world different species of animals are considered races), etc. In many ways, these two movies are alike. Directed at children, but not made exclusively FOR children

To be honest it would have been way better if tom actually died there because it would have given that scene so much more meaning. Shadow lost maria and sonic would have lost tom but refused to become evil. That would have been such a cool parallel to shadow.
I remember when my theatre saw this part we all gasped like we just witnessed a terrible accident. My chest grew heavy and my eyes were swelling with tears when Sonic discovered his dad was lying on the floor. Like this I wasn't expecting at all man, but I am happy that Paramount and Jeff Fowler are taking risks with their storylines.

Beyond the absolutely amazing characterization of Shadow in this scene... This scene was honestly the best in the entire movie. It literally looked like a work of art. Like a painting/perfect still in a museum. Specifically at: 1:07, 1:18, and 1:32 As for his characterization. I really liked how Shadow wasn't wrongly the villain in this scene either. It was actually an honest mistake and to be fair, really pointed out how reckless Sonic and Tom tend to be. (IE: Impersonating Military Top Brass shouldn't be done so frivolously. Especially when you KNOW what they did in the past and that that very past is actively hunting them.) Credit to Tim Butler too. He really nailed "Tom's" reaction. You truly saw the: "Oh Shit! I didn't think this through! No-No-No-No-No!" going through his mind. When I look back on this film, this is the scene that truly stands out and it needed to as this was both when Shadow got his revenge (not really but he thought he did) which cleared his mind of just enough rage for him to look at the situation and realize that he's becoming the same kind of monster that the G.U.N and its soldiers are.

Can we talk about how that Rockwell lady is super sus in this scene? She hesitated when handing the launch key over and looked like a scolded child when he ordered her to get the reinforcements. Earlier she called Sonic and his friends "aliens" with serious disgust and admitted in the previous scene to this that the "vault" was a trap they'd set to capture everyone and get BOTH launch keys. Plus, after the commander had been attacked in Japan, he handed the key to Sonic and said "You're the only ones I trust with this". I think she's the one Gerald mentioned he cut a deal with for his freedom. No way they would let Gerald out knowing how dangerous he was.
