    Also Tim, I'd like to point out for those that perhaps aren't leatherworkers, that the application is safe by hand, sponge, rag - anything really. And after it absorbs, a quick polish with a rag, microfiber cloth, anything lint free, is sufficient enough, because not everyone has the fancy horsehair brushes, which of course works best. Unless someone has scenting to add to this...?

      That's fair enough. I was aiming the video towards leather workers but leather balm is for anyone who owns quality leather goods.

      All good. Fair enough. But, a newbie leather worker night fall into the category I was referring to. (You know I got an answer for all your arguments and have the last word right?) No matter how illogical lol

    Definitely not a leather worker or anything, but I’ve been researching ways to condition and protect my Ona camera bags. Bought a tin of this stuff per your recommendation on this video and so far I’m impressed. The bags look fantastic now that I’ve put a nice application on them.

      It's pretty good stuff. I use it on stuff I make as well as my boots and my wife's boots. Also works as beard oil in a pinch haha

      @@BlackFlagLeatherGoods I tried this over Smith’s, Colorado, Leather Honey, and Ona’s own house brand… not sure if they’re all generally the same, or if one has a significant advantage over the others. I’d like to try them all someday, but so far I haven’t had the necessity to do so. All my Ona’s have arrived on the dry side IMO. I figured a company like Ona would have done a conditioning before shipping. All three of my bags have benefited in feel and looks after a good balming and buffing.

      They're all similar. Vera's is a bit more moisturizing and a bit less wax. Smiths has more wax and moisturizes a bit less. It's kind of a balancing act between moisture and water proofing. Sometimes I'll apply a moisturizer then finish with something waxier. It's almost all good stuff though. Also easy to make yourself if you want to go that route.

    Tim: I am very confused. Why is leather balm different from; Bick 4? Saphir Rennovator? Fiebings Aussie? Fiebings Carnuba wax? I usually use Neatsfoot oil at the very end of my leather projects. Can you follow up with the difference? I know the idea is to moisturize the leather. Is this only personal choice?

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods 2 роки тому

      It's some level of choice I think. The main difference (I think) is that the stuff with more oil than wax will moisturize better and The stuff with more wax will protect better. I like Veraforma Leather's balm which is more oily than waxy. I do have a waxier balm I made myself if I want something to have a bit more protection from the elements though.

    Generally when it comes to reinvigorating and protecting leather it's best to start with a clean product. At some point, without it, you're basically just imbedding more gunk into your footwear. First remove loose debris with a rag, then mix a solution of Dawn soap and water. Apply the mix on the surface with a sponge or applicator brush in circular motion to remove excess impurities. When complete the leather will look really raw and light colored. This is the point when you'll either need to apply new dye, oil or both. Then later, when it's all absorbed the leather will regain a rich color. That's the point where you'll want to coat with a wax for protection and water resistance. Taking care of boots is a process. Generally, depending on how much their worn, you'll only need to do this once in a while. I have boots and shoes from the early 90's and they still look great with this process. Cheers BFLG 🍺
