    One suggestion i will make only cause I've seen it happen many times on 2 stroke engines is to exercise the shafts while under pressure, setting static may pass test but when under motion could fail test, I've found many leaky seals by exercising the shaft.

      Mine still passes the pressure test even turning the prop and shifting , the vacuum holds to , until you turn the drive shaft and shift it ...I like to spay soapy water on it , but that don't work with vacuum, and I gotta have both hands to turn it

    Enjoy your channel. Thanks for the nice tip.
    If you already have an air compressor with an external regulator on it you could use that and save the price of a new regulator and just build the adaptor(s).

      Yeah but I didn't want to mess with the on board regulator every time I test a gear box. Thanks for watching and the comment

    Another good video. Thank you Michael. A name brand lower unit tester is the range of $150-$170 bucks. Dangar from Dangar Marine videos uses a brake fluid pump/bleeder. Kinda neat idea as well.

    Good project!! When draining old oil I have put some fresh in the top hole just to flush out any solids. The old stuff comes out first then the fresh.

      When I get an old outboard that I don't know of the maintenance record, I drain the lower unit, fill it back with kerosene, put it in gear and crank it over good with the spark plugs removed (lot easier without compression and it won't start on you). You'd be surprised of the gunk and until then stuck metal shavings that will drain out afterwards.

    Nice video. I always like how creative you get using your engineering skills. I believe a vacuum test is necessary though because I’ve seen lower units pass a pressure test but still fail under vacuum. This means water intrusion. Seals need to work in both situations not just under positive pressure.

    When I was 12 or 13 years old my dad and I found a 9.9 Johnson at a local lake. A pip broke in the dam so they let out almot 1/2 the water.. I seen the top sticking out of the mud my dad told me its just the top. He went to grab it and pull a whole 9.9 Johnson out of the mud God knows how long it what in there.. we went home pulled the plug cleand a few eletricla connections fucker started right up 4 pull.. I still use it to this day on the back of the 12 foot boat my grand father gave to me afere I found that little 9.9. Im almost 30 now..

    My thought is to make something out of one of the pumps for lower unit fluid so you have the adapter my only other thought is on a alpha one lower you have to seal up the oil port that goes to the upper unit somehow and it's pretty small

    As always a great video. The DIY tool is terrific. I personally do that type of thing quite a bit. I don't quite understand why you used the rubber hose and the extra steps. Wouldn't be easier and simpler if you used a threaded brass fitting and connect it directly to another air-chuck and forgo the hose, clamps and extra parts? Plus it would be a simple twist on and off a lubricated air-chuck to change out the different sized drain plugs and you wouldn't have to make extra hose connections. I can see the use of a hose as an extension for different applications where it may be harder to reach. . . Great channel! Keep it going! (LIKED)

      You lost me on the VOM. It will run on 60 psi but that is pretty low compression. I have had a couple 9.5 with 60-70 psi and they ran just fine.

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina
      @Michaelsbackyardmarina  Рік тому +1

      I would agree, I have also heard of doing a vacuum test to see if it hold vacuum and I would guess that would let you know that water could get in if air can get in. Thanks for watching

    You should use only Five psi to test for leaky seals anything more can make a bad seal appear not to leak it will expand the lip too much
