You will need to install node exporter on each of the virtual machines. I would suggest to use ansible to install node exporter agents on all the 500 virtual machines and manage them easily. Without using ansible, it will be quite difficult to install and manage agents on those large numbers of virtual machines. Other thing which you can do is to install agent on the base image and then create virtual machines using that image.
