This is one of the most popular Home Free songs. It was the first song I ever heard from Home Free & I was instantly hooked. It really showcases the talent of these 5 men (their tight harmonies, Tim Foust's bass & Adam Rupp's incredible beatboxing). They are my favorite a cappella group. This song is very old & is done in the bluegrass country style. It was used in the movie "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" starring George Clooney.

There are a bunch of videos "from the vault" that show a lot of behind the scenes...but a few specifically show the moment they were touring and Covid Lockdown hit as they were in Europe...as well as a video showing their first show back afterwards.

The sound that you hear in the intro of the official video is a jaw harp, and it is done by (Adam) Chance. He can only do it for a short time, as it hurts his throat, so they usually loop it when performing in concert.
Adam (Rupp) is performing not only the drum kit, but his "nomonica". The saying goes, he never met a sound he couldn't imitate.
Tim Foust tends to use a "growl" technique for his super low notes, rather than the sub-harmonics that Geoff Castellucci uses. An interesting song to hear a good sample of Tim's range is Hooked On a Feeling, a collaboration he did with The Bass Gang; he does a low bass line throughout, but at the end he really gives a good feeling for just how high he can go as the video closes. The Bass Gang include reactor Peter Barber, a professional opera singer (bass, naturally!), and it another a cappella group worth giving a listen to.

When people are worried about doing a solo in our church choir, I send them Colder memory lapse and explain the audience knows all the words & knows exactly how much of a mixup they were hearing (and enjoying). The congregation hasn’t a clue what you’re playing, so don’t worry!!

Many folks have wondered where the official video of this song was made. Several have guessed Louisiana, because of the alligator. It was shot at Oak Hollow Farm in Fairhope, Alabama, on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. Yes, it rains a lot down here on the gulf coast, and there are alligators all along the gulf coast states.

  • @martinhafner2201
    @martinhafner2201 Рік тому +2

Adam has gotten an award or two for his beatboxing at acappella events. I hadn't heard about him being in specific beatboxing competitions, so that probably didn't happen. He has put in a huge amount of work to be able to provide any sound effect they might need.
Chance is the better choice for the jaw harp sound, since he is using something like Tibetan throat singing to get 2 resonances. For the low-ish harp notes to be overtones requires the lower range of a baritone. Adam is more of a high tenor, which is good for most of the beatboxing.

I just had this come up in my recommendations so I had to give y'all a watch since we love Home
Free so much. The wife and I got to see them live this past February since Tim is from here. They come here every year so Tim can get his crawfish meal. LOL They are unbelievable live. When Tim hits the low notes the place rattles. You can feel it in your chest almost like feeling a top fuel taking off type of rattle. The wife and I are subbing just for the Home Free and the Angelina Jordan videos. Check out "When a Man Loves a Woman" and "Two Country Singers Try to Sing Opera". Any song you pick by them, whether it's a cover, or an original, will blow your socks off. Their covers are more of an upgrade than a cover in my opinion. You two youngins are gonna love this rabbit hole.

When I saw this video for the first time, I had to do a double take to see if I recognized the location since it looks so close to the area near where Austin grew up in Georgia with the gator. Also makes me giggle that their first song from the Sing off was from Florida Georgia Line.

Y'all did a great job learning their names. You also are developing a good sense of their vocal roles. IMO, once you get a feel for each member's vocal role, you're Mayday-ready.

Your list is awesome! I cant wait for Take Me Home Country Roads and Unchained Melody. I dont think Tim does subharmonics. The experts who know have called it a growl note. We Home Fries call it the Dragons breath. But he only uses it if the song calls for it. Home Free does whats best for the song, not just vocal acrobatics because they can to show off. I got to see them live and Tims deep basso profoundo will really rattle your body. People with pacemakers have had to move back from the stage. Pieces of plaster roofs have fallen down and he has blown at least 2 sound systems I have seen recorded. Its unreal. Btw, Chance was born in Fla. and was raised not far from where this video was shot in Alabama. He is a Dolphins fan.

I see you noticed that they do layer vocals in their videos. This made it possible for Adam's beat boxing to continue while he adds the harmonica layer. Also Chance's "jaw harp" can continue while he is singing harmonies. In concert they demonstrate the use of a loop machine to allow them to get in a few extra layers.
    Some more Home Free suggestions;
    Spiritual: How Great Thou Art.
    R & B: End of the Road.
Romantic: When a Man Loves a Woman
5 Part Harmony (No beat boxing): Brothers in Arms.
Motown (sorta): Blue Ain't Your Color.
    Country: Hillbilly Bone.
Funny Medley: Butt's Remix and Country Fried Pop Medley.
    Christmas: Mary Did You Know.
Beat Boxing: Adam Rupp's Drum Solo.
    Collaboration: American Pie and Elvira.
Patriotic: Tavelin Soldier, God Bless the U.S.A, and Land of the Free.
Other Great Songs: In the Blood, My Church, Amazed, Blue Ain't Your Color, Folsom Prison Blues, and Fishin’ in the Dark / Down in the Boondocks.

Yes, they record some sounds at the concert, and playback on a looper. This song’s percussion especially, seems just a bit too extended and repetitive for only five voices.
These videos are both before Covid.
Rob always looks the same. Tim has short greying hair now.
Chance always has a beard and usually a hat.
Adam and Austin’s looks are hard to pin down. Adam is fair, Austin ginger.
But you guys are doing great.
Any of those songs from your top of the list are good next choices.

It’s so good. I’ve seen them live and they are incredibly good. Tim always does that with his hand…you’ll know he’s going low as his hand descends. Yes, Adam has a looper and Chance did the mouth harp sound. He does it into the looper as it hurts his voice too much to do it too long. Austin and Adam often do the harmonica together live. This song is over 100 years old and there are many covers of it. Even O Brother Where Art Thou is a cover. I loved them doing the mashup with Oldtime Road. Just so you know, Chris Rupp is in earlier videos. He wears a ball cap or cowboy hat and founded Home Free with his brother Adam Rupp. He left the group in 2016 and was replaced by Chance. That’s the only change since 2013 except hair styles. During Covid Tim couldn’t get to the hairdresser so he cut his hair and let gray come in so in newer videos he has short hair. The boys have let their hair grow. The only one who looks exactly the same is Rob. Enjoy and I subbed! 🥰😍

A bit of trivia: Home Free & Voice Play competed in the same season of The Sing Off. HF won, but they became friends & have appeared in each other's videos occasionally. Geoff from VP was an excellent bass back then but the whole group, in MY opinion, wasnt neatly the greats they are today! They have greatly improved! But Tim worked with Geoff on getting those low, low lows he's so known for. Obviously, Geoff was an excellent student! 😅 Tim also used to teach tenor, too, so go figure. 🤔
Also - fan videos are always iffy sound-wise.... Especially if said fan is singing along close to his/her phone. 🙄

Great reactions! Seeing Home Free on stage is always amazing, even though cellphone microphones can't possibly do them justice -- I love seeing these clips! Your spreadsheet is also amazing, and proves, among other things, that you can't go wrong with any choice you make. I'll put in an advanced request for their Christmas masterpiece, "Do You Hear What I Hear", arranged by Adam Rupp. You can save it for December, or not -- it's mind-blowing any time of the year!

Tim has released a doo wop album called Pieces of Me. He has 4 videos from the album on you tube. He does all harmonies and rhythm himself. He will blow your mind! You will be shocked at his 5 octave range. My favorite is his cover of the Beach Boys hit In My Room.

I want to know more about how Adam does that harmonica sound without a harmonica! Fantastic! That blows my mind right there! I’d love to learn how to do that one day…but in the meantime, I’ll just practice on my actual harmonica that I recently got for my birthday. 😊🎶

The live video started a little after Home Free started setting up the song. In concert they openly explain that they use live-looping and show Chance doing the "jaw harp" while Adam Rupp records it. Then Robb is recorded doing some of the background "dum dum doo" and Adan Rupp records the basic drum beat so they're all freed up to sing, do "harmonica" solos, and so on.
Yes they're all quite versatile and can all beatbox to some degree. Chance will do more of a background "guitar" in some songs, you saw Austin do some "harmonica". When it comes to singing, Rob's a chameleon - he'll do country in a lot of their songs but will go more blues in others, rap in at least one, pop in others and, when you get to it, opera as well. Chance was actually the bass singer in his previous group and will take over when Tim is soloing and has an incredibly rich baritone to fill the middle. Adam Rupp can sing as well and does fill out the harmonies from time to time.
When you get to the older videos like "Butts Medley" and "Ring of Fire", you'll see founding member (and Adam Rupp's brother) Chris Rupp instead of Chance. Chance was added to the group after Chris Rupp left to focus on other aspects of his life and career.

Caution: Home Free is highly addictive! Bonus: You can't run out of content! 3 of them are song writers so there are lots of originals as well as covers. They also tour extensively so there are lots of live (audience taken) videos.
And they each have channel(s) of their own. Tim, Austin & a consortium of other singer/song writer/ musicians have a side project "Sweet & Low Music Co." as well as doing fund raising for at-risk veterans. Tim has another side project "Alley Cats". Tim also has songs with "The Bass Gang" & duets with Peter Hollens & Chris Rupp. Chance also sings with "The Hound & the Fox". Rob has a song with VoicePlay. These are very busy guys . . .
