The first Beatles CD box set was released in 1988. It held all the CDs including both Past Masters sets plus a book by Mark Lewisohn. The box was a nice black oak roll-top box. If you want to be a real completist, in 1989 there was a CD singles box set with all their British singles on mini CDs and in 1992 a CD singles box on standard size CDs followed by an EP box set containing all the British EPs on CD.
Brian, I have some information you may not have known. The mono box is NOT the only place you can get the original 1965 stereo mixes for Rubber Soul and Help on CD. I recently listened to a podcast featuring mastering engineer Kevin Gray. According to Kevin Gray, in the late 80s you could find the original mixes on CD from the Canadian versions of Help and Rubber Soul.
Yes you are so right. I also recently came across this fact on a Beatles message board. Apparently the Canadian duplication plant received the original 65 mixes and burned those to CD. Someone actually sent me both Help and Rubber Soul from the Canadian CDs (just the files, not the CDs themselves) and they sound pretty good. Thanks for bringing this up! Such a cool fact.
@@BrianBringelson That is encouraging! I scoured ebay searching and was lucky enough to find both for reasonable prices. I haven't heard them as they are still in transit. Have you compared them to the ones included in the mono box?
I have them all plus the 1988 roll top set. The 2014 US Albums set sounds superior to all in my opinion. Although they use the same master mixes they are mastered differently than the the 09’s and it’s obvious upon listening. They did sweeten the sound based on the notes on the Capitol tape notes. Greg Calbi says he received the digital masters from EMI with absolutely no limiting applied prior to final mastering. The White Album box outtakes are fantastic! Same for Peppers. Abbey Road not so much, but I think there just wasn’t the amount of outtakes we’d like to think that really exist.
The two US Album Box Sets are my go-to's. They were the first truly great sounding Beatles sets, and they did it right, giving us both the mono & stereo mixes. And they were not nearly as pricey as the sets are today. Plus the added reverb on many of The Capitol mixes just adds to the excitement and rockiness of the tracks. They are the two I will never part with. Take care...
The problem with "The Beatles Capitol Albums Volumes 1 & 2" released in 2004 and 2006 is that get the fold-down Stereo To Mono (Fake Mono) on Meet The Beatles! (10 Tracks), The Beatles' Second Album (8 Tracks), The Early Beatles (11 Tracks) and Help! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (6 Tracks) - A total of "35" fake mono tracks. With the Capitol Stereo versions you get Duophonic (Fake Stereo) on Meet The Beatles! (2 Tracks), The Beatles' Second Album (3 Tracks), Beatles '65 (2 Tracks), The Early Beatles (2 Tracks), Beatles VI (1 Track) and Help! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (1 Track). A total of "11" fake Stereo tracks. Plus, The Capitol Albums are from 4th or 5th generation tapes compared to the original UK Master Tapes. The 2014 Capitol box set contains most of the unique U.S. mixes (except 3 or 4) plus get get the true mono and stereo mixes.
I have all of those. I think my favorite is the mono box set. They sound great and I love the cute little pigmy reproductions of the original LP sleeves. I preordered the double LP POB. I want the cd box set but it’s kind of expensive. Man I wish Apple/capitol or whomever would just include those awesome books with the LPs!
One box set that gets overlooked is the e.p collection from the '90's although I have not compared the sound quality to the recent remixes the e.p''s are in glorious mono plus you get two c.d's of MMT.
Agreed with you on albums boxed sets have white album in third behind abbey road, then sgt. Pepper. Waiting for let it be box set coming this fall. Rumours saying this will be the best
I bought the US Albums box set to put the CDs from my Capitol Albums box sets inside that set because the LP replicas are great in the US Albums box set.
I bought the capitol vol 1 box when it first came out and enjoy the reverb sound that I grew up with. The packaging was not the best but the bottom line is the sound. Never got around to getting vol 2 but it's on my list. I also bought the Beatles in mono box when that first came out and the sound along with the packaging is perfect. With Abbey Rd, I just went for the cd's with the outtakes. Looks like I need Pepper and White!! I just might get John Lennon plastic Ono since it is my favorite solo. Enjoy your videos!
First of all I want to say that I love the fact we are all in full nerd mode about the Beatles music. This is so great! I once had a music teacher in college that said all of the music of the Beatles, Stones, and other rock groups wouldn’t even be a footnote in comparison to classical works by Mozart, Beethoven, etc. Well, he was dead wrong. I have decided that my musical focus for the next year or two is going to be getting the Beatles albums on cd and vinyl and your videos are really helping me sort it all out. I have a feeling from listening to you that we have a lot of the same opinions about this stuff. Vinyl is my favorite. I was born in 1968 so vinyl is what I grew up with. I have had to explore this all on my own because my parents were not fans of the Beatles. I also have the guitar chord book of all of their songs and have been working those out on acoustic guitar. The songs hold up in that format and I just can’t believe how good all of the melodies and hooks are. Genius stuff! Thank you for what you are doing. Big fan of your channel!!!
I got all you showed. Plus the US Albums and the Japanese Albums. Also have the old Singles and EP’s CD sets from the early 90’s. The Mono and Stereo sets are my favorites. The companions. I tend to listen to the stereo ones more as has all the albums, but lately I’m getting more on the mono box. However due to it’s value I’m afraid to take the disc out sometimes. I cannot wait to add the Get Back/Let it Be set with my other anniversary sets. Also can’t wait to see the new film.
Great video Brian! I love these box sets. You might want to reconsider the US Albums box from 2014. Although these do not come from the Capitol masters, they do have all of the unique mixes such as the stereo Day Tripper and mono I’m Only Sleeping which are unique to the Yesterday and Today as well as the A Hard Day’s Night soundtrack originally from United Artists (though you can buy these separate without getting the box). The packaging on the US album set is first rate whereas the 2004 and 2006 sets are shoddy. I also love the Mono set and prefer that to the stereo which I never actually bought as I purchased the CDs separately. The anniversary sets are great, Sgt. Pepper is good for the new remix while the White Album is good for the bonus discs rather than the new mixes and I probably listen to the Abbey Road the least. The original album sounds so good and really didn’t need a remix and the bonus material was a little dull. But I would rather have these than not have them. Looking forward to Plastic Ono Band box as well as getting Let It Be/Get Back (hopefully). Thanks for posting.
I ended up borrowing the White Album from the library and downloading the Abbey Road set and putting them all on my I-tunes account / I-pod. However, I bought the Capitol sets, the black and white remaster sets and Sgt Pepper. I went crazy for the black remaster box, I'd never heard them sound as good as that 10 years ago, The mono set, I will agree, is top-notch. I think it's my favorite of all the stuff I have. Sgt Pepper completely blew me away. I was off for a long memorial day weekend when it was delivered by Amazon and I spent those days just diving into it. These are all on my I-tunes / I-pod.
I own the U.S. Albums & '09 Stereo which I bought mostly for collection completion reasons and they sound good enough for me, but I'm dying to get a mono set sometime for a decent price. Right now they look to be going for $300-$500 and I'll rarely see them for just under $200. The '09 and '14 mono releases should have definitely been standard releases like the stereo counterparts.
The mono box set is my overall favourite followed by the super deluxe boxes for Sgt. Pepper, The White Album and Abbey Road. With the three super deluxe box set there are the occasional disappointments, there are rarities I know exist and in some cases know are good that aren't included but I do enjoy the wealth of rare material that is on all of them and the surround mixes. I was grateful for the rare tracks on the Pepper box because I've felt like that's a rare exception of a Beatles album with outtakes not covered that well by bootlegs. Anthology 2 did a bit to start correcting that then the Pepper box took it to the next level.
I am very interested in what Giles Martin and Co will do with 'Let it Be'. As the original tapes were not considered optimal quality this one is of special interest.
@3rd Ear I wish I knew that detail. I was under the impression that the original multi-track recordings were not great. But I could be wrong. If those multi-track tapes are of an equivalent quality to the other late albums and singles Giles Martin could produce something truly great with them. Cheers.
Great video Brian. I still would love to get the Beatles in Mono CD boxset haven't got them yet. Also, has a winner been announced or notified from your 2k subscribers competition?
Loved the video Brian. While I've only got the standard Pepper/Abbey Road/White Album remix sets (SP and AB on vinyl too), my prized possession (like Stephen L) is The Beatles In Mono set. I was one of those who got fleeced with a dodgy Chinese set at first 😔. So I then immediately went and got the real deal from Amazon. Absolutely love it though. Rubber Soul and Pepper especially sound amazing. I'm praying for a Revolver remix set. next (to get the best of the mono/stereo combined into proper album.)🙏
Hi Brian how u doing I enjoy your video . Great video 👍👍 I was wondering Brian if by chance you could do a video of the box set magical mystery tour March. 14.2021.
Great to see you Brian! I own everything but the Capitol boxset. I have to say that i enjoy listening to the three Anniversary editions with equal enthusiasm and enjoyment, but like you my stereo box tends to sit on my shelf... but tomorrow i'm going to dust it off and watch the DVD mini-doc disc which i haven't seen in an age. Take care, and all the best from the UK.
Great video! The Abbey Road boxset is also my least favorite of the three anniversary boxset (I agree that the White Album is the best ), but it definitely grew on me while reading Solid State by Kenneth Womack. It's an excellent OST for that fantastic read.
ah yes. I think i just looked to see when the first one came out and kind of forgot that they came out at different times. but thanks for clearing it up!
Abbey Road 2019 box set was such a let down. Would have loved a remix of Old Brown Shoes and Ballad of John and Yoko (which is weird because alternate takes were put in the box set if I remember correctly)
How about the Beatles US Albums box set. The one released in 2014. It has the mono and stereo versions. What do you think about the quality of the audio there?
Super excited to see you as passionate as ever about the Beatles man ! Beatles inspire me everytime I listen to any of their records. Are you still making music ?
Great video, I own all these, and would have to agree regarding the White album, which I also own the vinyl set as well. Sgt Pepper a strong second. I was a little disappointed with Abbey Road. I love the mono box, but love the vinyl version Even more. Of the solo release sets the John Lennon Imagine set is amazing. Looking forward to the POB release next Month.
It's amazing how different ears listen to differently, i always thought that the 2009 mono box set in general sounds dull, muddy and flat compared to the stereo box set, i agree that the stereo may have been done unauthentic because of modern digitalization, but albums like "beatles for sale" and "revolver" in My opinion sounds much fuller and cristaline in the stereo box set, Even a hard days night sounds better for me because it has more Reverb in stereo, but every one has their own taste regarding the sound. What i really expect in terms of future releases is "all things must pass" , for me is a better álbum than plastic ono band, and i am not so keen on "let it be", i really hope one day Apple release a "revolver" box set with a new remix done by Giles Martin. Ok, bye and take care Brian, as always , i really enjoy your videos.
Brian, just a quick question. When purchasing a vinyl album how far down the grading system would you go to get a good sounding copy. For an example would an original vinyl in vg+ be better than a new vinyl that as been poorly remastered. Thanks in advance and really enjoy your videos.
I decided I like the fake stereo mixes more than the mono mixes. I just don't like that there is no stage and everything seems to be coming from essentially one point. I am happy to sell my mono box CD set for anyone interested. I'm going to buy the 13-CD Capitol set that has the stereo and mono mixes.
I hope you didn't buy the black box set remasters from China. You said you spent 45 bucks on that and that's what I spent on mine without checking closely on the internet and didn't notice it was from China and I got ripped off. Same with the mono box set.
@@MisterBiscuitsOfficial Don't let that fool you. The one I got also had a bright green apple on the front and the CDs skipped and were in the wrong order.
Yes I'm glad you mentioned this warning. Thankfully mine is the real deal, but I had the seller send me photos of the actual CDs, front and back, and from that you can really tell if it's legit. But be warned, there are many rip offs out there.
@@BrianBringelson I ended up getting another stereo box set that was the real deal, but never did get the mono box set, just too expensive. All I have is the fake mono box set.
