Heathfield Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of East Sussex, and around 15 miles north of Eastbourne, is the town of Heathfield.
Geographically, Heathfield is situated around the southern end of the High Weald AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). It was granted a market charter in 1316 during the reign of Edward II.
In 1450 Jack Cade was fatally wounded in a skirmish in Old Heathfield - an area just east of the town centre of today. Cade led a rebellion against the English government. After a march on London turned violent, he retreated south towards Lewes, but was caught by Alexander Iden, the future High Sheriff of Kent. Cade died of his wounds before reaching London for trial, although his corpse was nevertheless beheaded and paraded as a warning to other potential rebels.
In 1880 a railway station opened in Heathfield. This was situated at around the point where the walk starts, just west of the original settlement of Old Heathfield, This explains the name of the first street - Station Approach. The coming of the trains ushered in a period of growth, with new buildings emerging in the vicinity of the station. Hence, the architecture seen is, by and large, late Victorian or later.
The railway station formed part of what was known as the Cuckoo Line. This line linked Polegate (near Eastbourne) with Eridge (near Tunbridge Wells). Its nickname was in reference to an annual fair held at Heathfield each April where a cuckoo would be released from a basket, ushering in the first cuckoo of spring. The line closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts - a controversial move to promote road travel by closing over 2,000 stations across Britain. Today, public transport to Heathfield consists of direct buses from Tunbridge Wells, Eastbourne, Uckfield and various other nearby settlements.

Ah what a beautiful start to the walk. Amazing structures. Nice town. It seems the level of camera is different as if a smaller Alex had held it.
