I listened to this after driving 16 hours back from Colorado, two hours till home. I'm driving through the Lost Pines forest, alone, past midnight, Sunday. My eyes heavy and I'm DRØWNing in fatigue. The only thing keeping me awake is the cold, woody air coming in through the back window of my black Toyota Tundra. My ice-blue headlights reflecting off the centerline of the road and the oxidized guardrails, I'm driving between lanes. I own the road. I run my hands over the black leather steering wheel, immersing myself in every signal my body is sending to my brain. I crest a hill at 03:45, met by smoke from a nearby fire. My gold fog lights cut through the smoke like a blade, I feel removed from the consequences of the world with the technology at my disposal, but so connected with the nuanced changes on my path, feeling every bump through the stiff, robust suspension, and being supported by the hardwaves emitting from my subwoofer. The heat coming from the dash is the only thing stopping me from shivering while the soft, orange glow of the instrument panel persists against my chilled arms, and into my eyes. One more hour to go.
