It’s no wonder so many people (including myself) see Kurt as such a powerful figure in music history, he took simple guitar techniques such as power chords and made a masterpiece. Then his lyrics and the way he sings them allows him to express his anger and other emotions to make people feel happy, it’s a shame that it didn’t make him happy like it made others happy.
I think music was one of the few things that did make him happy. He just came from an unfortunate broken background and had mental health issues and a nasty drug addiction, both of which we didn't know how to deal with back then.

So this is what attending a Nirvana concert was like.. since none of us alive will even be able to do such a thing ever again, I'd like to thank them for sharing this. Interesting vibe.
For people wondering where this footage came from, it was part of the 20th anniversary box set of Nevermind. The footage from the concert was remastered and released on dvd. It used to be an exclusive until independent channels uploaded the footage to UA-cam. I guess the label eventually decided to release it officially. Pretty cool to see though!
@@6whiteshadows I think he hated it because he might have thought that people we're thinking of Nirvana as a "one-trick pony" band... But Nevermind reached it's peak in 1992, so maybe this was before their spike to the top in terms of popularity?
I think that wiith how crazy of a guitar player Kurt was, it fell heavily on Krist's playing to hold their songs up and together. And Dave of course. Not that Kurt couldn't be one hell of a rhythm player, but I think you know what I mean.
This is really a priceless piece of music history. Such a raw, clean, early and f'n amazing video capturing the youth and honesty of Nirvana. Wicked strong bass track, skinny little 21 year old wailing away on the drum kit, nice solo from Kurt who look relatively healthy and sincere. Absolutely amazing. Good times. Great, great music.
Was 19 when I first heard this masterpiece. Could not believe this was actually coming through my speakers. It was surreal. There are a handful of things that pass through your soul while you are on this planet. This my friend was one of them. Thank you Kurt.. then now and forever.
32 years later, and that's almost my age! It's still fantastic, and Dave Growl is a legend, he was the drummer of an amazing band and the lead singer of an equally great band!
Dave Grohl looks so different back then too. So epic in a recent concert Dave reprised his role of drumming to this song and he’s still got it all these years later!
The lyric change from “our little tribe” to “our little group” throws me off every time! Tho i love this performance- Kurt genuinely looks happy to play the song.
@@ControlPointDonelson more likely he probably just got tired of playing it. Contrary to popular belief Kurt loved the idea of being mainstream and popular but would say he hated it in interviews either cause it made the band seem cooler or cause its sort of taboo to desire fame when you're apart of the underground scene. He only begun hating it cause he never anticipated how big they'd get and how it would affect their lives
Nirvana is Timeless! I would love it if in a couple of hundred years, Nirvana becomes as classic as Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Supremes...we need to preserve Kurt, Dave and Chris as Maestros deserving of the highest esteem of what humanity has to offer!
The Best "SLTS" Live Performance in my honest opinion... Damn. 😁 Kurt's Voice: ☑️ Kurt's Guitar Tone: ☑️ Dave's Beast Drumming: ☑️ Krist's Long Hand Bass: ☑️

1991... I distinctly remember driving home from my part time job I had while in college hearing this song on the radio for the first time and thinking, "This song will change music forever." It was like a lightning bolt from the moment it hit.
Dave is multi-talented for sure as we now know for the past 30 years, but Dave as the drummer for Nirvana was just what he did best. Kurt, Krist, and Dave were the perfect trio/team, and the band got stronger when Pat joined in 1993.
I know. Its hard to believe this is 1991, just a few years on from 80s glam rock. At the same time it's not even close to today and the shit music going around.
Look at my Playlists yes, maybe so, but that isn't how remastering works. As I'd already said, you can't make a 144p video into 4K. The videos looked good to begin with.
"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the gateway drug that got everyone hooked on Nirvana. I remember hearing this for the first time in 1991 on KROQ here in Southern California. The song landed so well they played it two times in a row. I immediately ran out and bought "Nevermind"....then "Bleach" the next day. I've been hooked ever since.

Nirvana on "Bleach" sounds a lot like The Pixies meets The Beatles. Nice, but didn't amaze me at the time "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" The production was totally different. Muscular, slick and that first riff a hook from the Gods. I can't remember exactly WHEN I first heard "Teen Spirit." That’s an amazing recording. Wow The amount of energy and passion is this performance is pretty incredible. It’s ironic because not only is the song itself ironic but this song also became the embodiment of the very thing Kurt despised about his success.
I always thought that Krist the bass player looked like Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off! Man I loved living in Seattle when all this happened. It's not that he was "bad". Maybe a little lazy at times. But he was pretty innovative and he got the job done. That's all that matters...
So epic watching Kurt rock out!
So glad that he didn’t throw his guitar on the ground for this one

All about Kurt
For people wondering where this footage came from, it was part of the 20th anniversary box set of Nevermind. The footage from the concert was remastered and released on dvd. It used to be an exclusive until independent channels uploaded the footage to UA-cam. I guess the label eventually decided to release it officially. Pretty cool to see though!
I think it has something to do with the newly released Live At The Paramount Orange Vinyl edition.
OutTheBox that box set is awesome. Glad I got it back when it came out.
And one of the few good live versions of SMTS. Kurt hated playing the song, so he often intentionally screwed it up live
@@6whiteshadows I think he hated it because he might have thought that people we're thinking of Nirvana as a "one-trick pony" band... But Nevermind reached it's peak in 1992, so maybe this was before their spike to the top in terms of popularity?
OutTheBox good call
The bass really drives this song.
So do the drums. And the guitar. And the vocals. And the effect boxes.
@@victor-charlesscafati BEAST MODE
I think that wiith how crazy of a guitar player Kurt was, it fell heavily on Krist's playing to hold their songs up and together. And Dave of course. Not that Kurt couldn't be one hell of a rhythm player, but I think you know what I mean.

Hi I recommend you Live MTV Studios
This is really a priceless piece of music history. Such a raw, clean, early and f'n amazing video capturing the youth and honesty of Nirvana. Wicked strong bass track, skinny little 21 year old wailing away on the drum kit, nice solo from Kurt who look relatively healthy and sincere. Absolutely amazing. Good times. Great, great music.
before they hated playing the song
Was 19 when I first heard this masterpiece. Could not believe this was actually coming through my speakers. It was surreal. There are a handful of things that pass through your soul while you are on this planet. This my friend was one of them. Thank you Kurt.. then now and forever.
yea the first time listening to this is life changing
Yeah, sure you did.
Exactly what happened to me when I first heard it. Was in the car and literally had to pull over.

The best live version of Smells Like Teen Spirit by far. This entire concert is Nirvana at their peak imo.
Its because they purposely played it worse than everything else because Kurt hated being mainstream
@@ControlPointDonelson yea I’ve heard that. More reason I appreciate this version, bc it’s the purest live video of this song in existence.
I respectfully beg to differ, the 04/17/1991 O.K. Hotel version (listed as the first time the song was played live) is even better
I love Krist Noveselic back then, he loved Kurt and loved being in Nirvana, you can tell he had so much fun
its a shame what happened, we lost a true superstar
Nirvana is Timeless! I would love it if in a couple of hundred years, Nirvana becomes as classic as Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Chopin, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Supremes...we need to preserve Kurt, Dave and Chris as Maestros deserving of the highest esteem of what humanity has to offer!

Dave is multi-talented for sure as we now know for the past 30 years, but Dave as the drummer for Nirvana was just what he did best. Kurt, Krist, and Dave were the perfect trio/team, and the band got stronger when Pat joined in 1993.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the gateway drug that got everyone hooked on Nirvana. I remember hearing this for the first time in 1991 on KROQ here in Southern California.
