    I don't see anybody talking about her deathhawk and telling her that's what natives did... i don't see u guys hating on the boho style that mocks gypsy tradition..
    i see you wearing polish flower crowns.. i see you wearing romanian blouses... what is the problem with the hair? can't you dutch braid if you're french? can't you frenchbraid if you're dutch? can't you wear the irish quilt print on your clothes? can't you shave your hair because you mock buddhists? can't you go on a vegetarian diet because you mock indians? can't you eat sushi because you're making fun of japanese? can't you use chopsticks? can't you eat tacos or beans because you mock mexicans? can't you own a husky because eskimos will get mad? can't you eat pizza or pasta? COME ON PEOPLE. BEFORE ANYTHING WE'RE HUMAN . WE'RE EQUAL. As a romanian i know how it is like to be treated for less than you are. i know how it is to be oppressed.. I think we should let history go. it's saddly to late to change the mistakes the conquerers and explorers made

      It's not that it originally belonged to another culture. It's that people of the culture who it originally belonged to are mocked and discriminated against for having this hairstyle.

      The oppression of black people was and is far greater than most ethnicities, it's a much bigger problem. Black hair is so different from the majority of ethnicities, the management of it is a massive part of black culture, so when it's used to be different or to rebel its offensive because it's something done to be more normal or make life less hard or to lessen the discrimination. That's what cultural appropriation is, using it to be different which to her is positive but many see dreads negatively when it's a black tradition

      This is literally the BEST explanation of what I've been trying to tell people. As long as she isn't actually bashing whoever started this hairstyle, it can't be offensive.

    All this bullshit about cultural appropriation is really getting out of hand. I'm pretty sure the picts from Scotland had dreadlocks in their hair (this was from 600-900 AD I believe) Also I don't get pissed off when non Scots wear tartan. Whats wrong with people finding other traditions attractive?

    Everyone seriously needs to shut up with this *"cultural appropriation" BS*. Because she's not African American, she can't wear dreads?? I'm African American myself and my hair was chemically straight for almost all of my life... and I have never had to hear Europeans and Asians get offended by me for "mimicking/adopting" their hair. You know why?? Because that starts irrelevant conflict and hate.

    Not every white person who decides to get dreads is a racist, or appropriating anything. Dread locks are not assigned to one specific race. If you do not brush your hair it will knot and form a dread. I did a lot of research on this topic because I want dreads, but it was brought to my attention that it was appropriation. I asked close friends of mine (not white friends) my uncle and some people I know via the interwebz. I received a lot of different feedback. At the end of the day I decided that me getting dreads was a good option for me (still waiting to do so). There is a huge difference between tossing on black face and taking the time to put in dreads.

    Not trying to be a smart ass or anything, but for people arguing that this is cultural appropriation, couldn't that apply to many hairstyles? For example braids, buns, mohawks, etc. I've seen popular African American, White, and Hispanic UA-camrs with faux hawks and no one seems to make an issue of that being part of Native American culture. I don't claim to know the culture significance of dreadlocks but I'm pretty sure everyone has been guilty of "cultural appropriation" whether they were aware of it or not. To be honest, it's a sad day when people make issues out of things that can't be stopped. The world is a global community. More and more cultures are being mixed together, it is inevitable.

    • @visualsbyjae9727
      @visualsbyjae9727 9 років тому +1

      I'm glad you as a white person, or whatever non black and white passing person you are, can telle, a black person, how to feel about my culture. Sorry but I can't get offended for the Native Americans but I can stand with them if they feel offended instead of bringing up other cultures appropriated and dismiss their voice as complaining about something all too common. Why? Because it's their culture and they can rightfully feel offended. Btw how do I turn off notifications for just this vid.

      +Remy O I just wanted to point out that many white people are looked at as dirty, smelly, drug dealers, etc when wearing dreadlocks as well. At least where I'm from, it's not the skin colour but the hairstyle itself. Which honestly is ridiculous, everyone should be able to dress and style themselves however they please. Similar things happen to those with "excessive" tattoos and piercings. It's honestly the only reason I don't have either dreads or tattoos myself, unfortunately I'm going to need a job when done college and that won't happen if I don't look "professional" in the eyes of future employers. I don't know, maybe it's different in the USA?

      +thenerdshopper For a long time Black people have been told how ugly and inappropriate our hair is, it is not ok for non-blacks to wear their hair in ways that have historical meaning attached and pass it off as a style or trend. It's not ok for a black person in dreads or corn rows to have a negative connotation but a non-black person can wear it and is fashion forward. Reverse racism is also not a thing. Black people straightened their hair as means of assimilating and being accepted.

    Just putting this out there for all those "cultural appropriation" a-holes. Also assuming someone's genetic heritage by the way they look is inappropriate. We need not be bigots by judging someone by the color of their skin. Is she insulting anyone for being a part of that culture? No, she's just wearing HER hair the way that SHE wants to. Also, there is no such thing as reverse racism. Racism itself refers to prejudice towards ANY race, not just the black race. for those who don't understand why people in the comments have an issue with this, its not really the fact that shes wearing dreads; its the issue that for years if you had dreads you were seen as unkept and couldn't get a job forcing a lot of people with the hair texture meant for dreads (kinky) have to cut them off to even get hired. its the issue that white people can have dreads and bright colors and be cool and edgy but when i black person does they're weed fanatics or ratchet... or they look "african" (something I've had said to me with my naturally kinky/poofy hair) so don't call someone sensitive or overreacting until you know what it feels like not to get hired or accepted because of something you can't control

      +London Pirtle it is an unfair racist double standard but anyone who has dreads chooses to have them. Even people with naturally kinky hair. It may be harder for them to not develop them but its easily avoidable nonetheless and many white people have kinky hair and have to fight off developing dreads (myself included)

    • @chocolate4queenrules

    • @Snoliify
      @Snoliify 8 років тому +6

      Blonde hair and blue eyes are genetic. There are black people born with blonde hair and blue eyes. You can't be born with dreads. Try again.

    • @Ghost-ux7dq
      @Ghost-ux7dq 8 років тому +8

      +KwonKey every black girl I know that I've seen with blonde hair and blue eyes it wasnt natural trust me. Either way it's just fucking hair I don't see why it's such a huge deal. People get offended by everything these days.

    • @Snoliify
      @Snoliify 8 років тому +3

      because its always "cool" or "exotic" when a white person does it, but when a black person (who claims it as a part of their culture) does it they are deemed as "dirty" and "unkept". ALSO just because you haven't seen a black person with blonde hair and blue eyes doesn't mean they don't exist. There are plenty of them.

    • @Ghost-ux7dq
      @Ghost-ux7dq 8 років тому +2

      +KwonKey did I say that they didn't exist? No. Also just to specify, I never said they were dirty or unkept and I also don't have problem that they do those things I'm just saying it's stupid that when a white person has dreads it's racist but when a black person dyes their hair blonde and wears blue contacts it's not. It's stupid. Everything is a double standard these days.

    I mean this is cultural appropriation. Dreads are a hairstyle that was created in Africa. Who lives in Africa? Black people. They created the hairstyle. It means much more than a fashion statement. Dreads, in Rastafarian culture, it signifies spiritual intent, natural and supernatural powers, and are a statement of non-violent non-conformity. They were also used, just like afros, to protest white supremacy and the oppressive nature of white culture. Though this is not always the case with dreads. Not every black person is trying to protest white supremacy with dreads (although everyone should protest white supremacy it's still very alive sorry to break it to you) and not every black person wears dreads for religious purposes. But they have cultural significance. Now, during the afro hair movement, white people wore afros in solidarity to protest white supremacy as well. They knew where it came from and they didn't wear it as a fashion statement. If you're going to wear this hairstyle you better know where it comes from and you better fight for our black brothers and sisters to be able to wear the same damn hairstyle as you without being labeled a thug, ugly, unprofessional bc this hairstyle was MADE FOR THEIR HAIR. I'm not saying you don't get to wear this hairstyle, I'm just trying to give of history and insight into why white ppl wearing dreads is seen as problematic. If you want to wear this hair it's only fair that you fight for black ppl to be able to wear this hair too.

    i dont ever comment on youtube videos, but the amount of inaccuracy being said from people that aren't black makes me want to gouge my eyes out. look up cultural appropriation. do your research. gather your sources. and stop trying to silence black people, like myself, who are offended by this. we dont care that your black friend agrees with white people having dreads. your black friend doesnt speak for US as a community. i dont think any of you are genuinely understanding as to WHY this is offensive. it's offensive because black people have been using this hairstyle and hairstyles alike (braids, cornrows, weave, etc) for centuries and we're constantly portrayed as ghetto and unkempt, but when white people do it theyre portrayed as alternative and "out there"

    • @yeshuasveryown

    • @LuLu6214
      @LuLu6214 9 років тому +4

      I just think it's sad that someone who loves or finds something beautiful is ridiculed for supporting it and finding positivity in it. I don't get offended when people wear Celtic Symbols, use henna, belly dance, wear kilts, drink Vodka or Scotch or chocolate milk, or at tattoo artists for using modern machinery. I think pointing out the negative tends to cause more problems than it solves.

    Beautiful! Don't listen to the cultural appropriation trolls. They obviously need to do some proper re search about dreads, as well as hair history, race and how it is all linked to religion etc. It is like saying straight hair is reserved for Caucasians only, while black people have braids or kinky curly hair...braids are universal. But it is the style where one use extension hair to add while braiding/twisting which is typically African. We all do braids, but adding aditional hair is not traditionally done if Caucasian or Asian. Also black is not a culture! Stupid people.

    I don't understand at all how her wearing dreads is even "offensive" to African Americans. Like, she wears her hair in the form some of you guys do, so what? Since when are certain styles only allowed to be worn by certain races? That's pretty racist. The world should be about sharing cultures and sharing new ideas and styles with each other, not getting all defensive and rude when someone wears her hair a certain way. It's obviously not like she was making fun of them or anything.

      Don't be afraid to express yourself! If people hate you for a certain way you like / wear your hair, that's their problem, not yours!

      VisualsByJae because people a whiny asses who think someones hair is their business...why can you get your hair styled with hair from other races, but when a white person does it, its wrong. Ill tell you what, you have a point WHEN all hair extension stores in urban areas go out of business. and dont bother with the "thats not cultural appropriation for me to get extensions" crap. i know all the arguements youre gonna make already. If you dont like cultural blending, stop doing it and leave the US because thats what goes on here.

    Dreads are just a form of knots... indians,africans,australians,celts,vikings,etc... ignorance leads to seperation, culture is like a plant... it is cultivated... dont be the culture be the human... be the spirit

    I don't care how annoying people think it is. But this is an issue that needs to be talked about. Dread locks are a hairstyle that keep black people hair protected and easy to style. When non black people do it they are trying to adopt it anf that's just NOT OKAY. It is cultural appropriation. Ntm these aren't even a good look on her.
