He was losing consciousness towards the of the fights, as seen when he had trouble talking (literally could think properly anymore) . Illya sacrificed herself to use the grail (her body);and activate the 3rd True Magic (materialization of the soul), thus allowing Shirous Soul to continue "living" without a body. They found a mage who makes Human like puppets (aoko or toko I forgot name) and thus re-created Shirous body and inserted his soul into it. Not a perfect happy ending but the only happy ending in the original Fate/Stay Night (Sabers true ending was added in Remake)

They go into it more in the VN but Shirou’s memory increasingly deteriorates when he uses the arm to the point he forgets conversations he just had, who people are including himself and general awareness of where he is. Shirou’s brain is being fried not just due to the projection’s strain but because his body simple can’t handle something as powerful as part of a servant. His brain is slowly becoming made/stabbed by the swords meant to protect his body akin to someone being shot in the head by a gun. That’s why there’s the whole phrase of “trigger off” when Shirou does archer’s incantation. Shirou basically thinks of his ability as cocking a gun to his head each time. Though, in reality it more so behaves as a timed bomb that explodes part of his brain when activated.
Basically, rmb when Illya explained the Grail n Heavens Feel. It s a ritual to activate the third magic, the magic to preserve n manifest the soul. Thats what Illya meant at the end when she said "to live in any form", and "show u true magic". Shirou's soul was preserved when the pendant broke, and u saw Archer holding him up. Rin n Sakura then spent a while looking for a suitable vessel for his soul, that was the puppet they found. So Shirou lived on in new body. Wish they could ve added some lines to make this clearer, literally could just say "But his soul remains" or smthing. This is the true ending, Illya sacrificing herself so Shirou could live, and ended the Holy Grail War for good. Iirc, in the normal ending he projected Excalibur to blast the Grail away n sacrificed himself, thus the line "my last projection".
I wish they also went into more detail on how fucked shirous brain was getting by the end point, we get glimpses of it but nowhere near as painful or descriptive as the VN.

It’s funny, every single character in the series is like Kotomine says, all of them harbor both good and bad, even Zouken and Shinji, both are scum but with Shinji he became the way he was from a sadistic family that doesn’t even see he exists and when Sakura comes in and becomes what he wished to be even with the horrors that entails became jealous of her, and constantly took that jealousy out on her in every way possible in order to feel above her because she can achieve something while he can’t. Zouken wished to reach a utopia beyond all evil and knew humanity couldn’t achieve it, so in his desires which couldn’t be achieved in his life time he became a dead apostle that desired only eternal life while forgetting what he wanted that life for, like kotomine said, good and evil. (I want to make sure people know this isn’t condoning them. They are both examples of the worst of humanity, but I think especially for fate it’s important to know and understand the origins of all the characters)

He was a Nasuverse fan and from what I see from his channel, TYPE-MOON is the MAIN franchise that he watches/talks/plays for unlike the other anime. And I'm pretty sure he knows what is Garden of Sinners and Witch on The Holy Night.
My best guess is that they haven’t watched Kara no Kyoukai. I was in the same boat as most of them. I watched all of Stay Night and was confused by this movie, but when I started Kara no Kyoukai, it made sense.

ive watched over 300 animes and this is easily the best animation i have ever seen. Completely blows any animation out of the water
