It's amazing how so many factors of this battle were sealed by 1 lucky shot. The hoods fate was sealed by a lucky shell to the magazine, the Bismarcks fate was sealed by one lucky torpedo to the rudder....
No. Hood was sunk because Bismarck had good gunnery control systems. Bismarck's stern was crippled by a Fleet Air Arm which had trained for years in torpedo bomber attacks on enemy warships.
the officer in command of HMS Hood, Vice Admiral Lancelot Holland, used to worship in Boldre church which is local to me. There is a memorial to the crew and a yearly service is held on the anniversary of the sinking. 1,418 men dead in 3 minutes.
Please do the Battle of Towton. It was one of the biggest battles of the medevil ages and the largest of the War of the Roses. A series on the Wars of the Roses would be even more incredible. Attempt #112
BazBattles I meant attempt #12, haha! Sorry about that. The art showing the knight fighting chest deep in the water has always caught my imagination when looking at this battle. I do hope you do a video on it.
Wars of the Roses would be amazing! Not only some of the most brutal and tactical battles in English history, but also a culmination of some of the most influential aspects of the Middle Ages. The Plantagenets' warlike tendencies, the rise of gunpowder, and the volatility of the feudal system all came to a head in one of the greatest historical finales of all time. In short, I second the motion.
A very useful illustration of events. Whatever one may think of the Bismark's intentions in sinking merchant vessels, one overriding rule among sailors is that you never leave a living soul adrift at the mercy of the sea. The cruiser Dorsetshire and destroyer Maori would have remained longer to rescue Bismark's survivors had lookouts not reported the possible sighting of a U-boat. Sailors on the British ships were seen frantically casting bouyancy aids to the Germans as the our ships began to steam away. One can only imagine the terror and anguish those young men felt at being left to their fate...
Well, it followed orders. If you think about it, Lutjens was right. The most powerful ship in the task force was damaged and in need of repair, its mission was over. The least powerful ship was still operational, could still do some damage and the enemy would rather sink the bigger threat.
I’m late to the show but I see people commenting on how the Bismarck went down on it’s first voyage and to biplanes. The Swordfish planes were obsolete, yes, but their obsolescence actually helped them sink the Bismarck due to their slow speed and wave top flight. The AA for the Bismarck actually wasn’t able to depress low enough for the planes and their speed made them hard to track. (The history visualized guy actually goes into great depth on this subject)
The Swordfish were not obsolete. They were front line aircraft that sank more Axis shipping than any other aircraft. They served to the end of the war.
You completly forgot about what happened after Ark Royals torpedo attacks - the best part of the story. 5 Destroyers where fighting with Bismarck for 8 hours.
Anyone else here after listening to the new Sabaton song? No. Anyone really interested in well graphically narrated historical WWII tide-turning battleship engagements?
Navy tactics: whoever brings more guns to the fight wins. Intelligence: enables surprise & coordination Surprise = force multiplier Coordination = force multiplier Aircraft carriers = exponential firepower multiplier The navy game is to use intelligence in a manner that enables coordinated superior concentrated firepower in a surprise attack. The KM at all times lacked reliable intelligence, firepower concentration, & surprise. They wasted their navy resources by not following this basic navy doctrine.
This video is top notch. Not only is the information presented in a very professional manner, but its technical quality is superb. In particular, the audio is much better than most UA-cam videos. One thing I learned is that Bletchley Park was up and running during this battle. I didn't know that they had broken the German Naval Enigma that early. I'm gonna have to check on this assertion to see if it is really true. Edit: I checked on it, and Gordon Welch and Alan Turing had already advanced Bletchley Park into code breaking the German Navy Enigma code. There is a UA-cam video called Bletchley Park by Ian Beckett that explains the chronology.
Yes, and in the video Baz mentions that the Germans were making mistakes too. Not really though as it would have been inconceivable to Lutjens that the Naval Enigma code could have been broken.
Thanks to Tate for his impeccable knowledge on World History. Earlier he said about the RAF and Survivorship Bias. Now, he talks about the Hood vs Bismarck. This is the highlight of the WW2, the most action packed series of events that led to the ultimate fate of Bismarck. Thanks to BazBattles for presenting this so well
Bruh its British fault that they sent pride of the fleet that was half wooden to fight Bismarck. Its not their fault Hood was so outdated it only took 1 shell for it to blow up. Thats British fault for sending such outdated ship on suicide mission
@@imma5761Unfortunately, war is rarely convenient. Although HMS Hood was in need of a long overdue overhaul, it was one of the few capital ships the Royal Navy had available that could match the speed of Germany's battleships. The others were 2 King George the 5th class battleships and 1 Renown class battlecruiser, beside aircraft carriers, in the Home Fleet. That was it!!
World of warships players know this feeling. Being the last ship going 1vs7. Experiencing that in real life when it matters though. I couldn’t even begin to fathom the intensity and sounds.
Th0ughtf0rce tbh the hood was at the same level I'd say as the Bismarck but miscommunication led it to fire on the wrong ship and then it was bracketed by the Bismarck
You are doing a great job! This video was very excitingly made. Even though I knew that the mighty German Battleship was about to sink, I nearly and secretly hoped that all things will go well for her - because you just telled the story so goddamn excitingly. Congratulations :)
I know right? The Bismarck was an impressive ship no matter how you see it, created by a nation with little naval power yet it immediately sunk the pride of the navy belonging to one of the most powerful, if not THE most powerful maritime nation at that time.
I've always been baffled by one question: since Bismarck was only a few hundred miles away from the French coast, why didn't the Luftwaffe rescue her? I mean the range of a bomb/torpedo-loaded Fw190 is 800 km/500 mi, which should be enough for such mission.
They didn't have the range with that combat load. Not to mention other British ships and British aircraft could have very well countered their support.
My guess is that it sailed under radio silence to prevent it being found ands identified; the Germans were always certain that their code ("Enigma") had not been broken.
@@BasementEngineer It's in many books on the topic. Now and then someone on the German side suspected that perhaps their code(s) had been broken but they always expressed confidence that the codes were unbreakable. You can start with what was perhaps the first book on the topic "Bodyguard of Lies" and move on from there to any of many, many books on the topic.
Lütjens was unaware that British had already lost Bismarck, that's why he broke radio silence since he thought that Bismarck was still being shadowed. Bismarck was the only ship damaged, Prinz Eugen was still undamaged meaning she could still continue the mission of commerce raiding
Germany here: I realized many people mention that the Bismarck's weakness was its rudder. In fact ALL ships' weakness is the rudder. Even for Rodney or KGV this kind of hit would have resulted in inmaneuverability..
Maybe their anti-aircraft protection? Actually I'm convinced Lutjens was the Bismarck's greatest weakness. I read many years ago that he gave his watch to his son before the operation and told him he wouldn't survive. He could've sunk POW and then returned back to Norway back thru the Denmark Strait imo. Heading to France meant fighting all the Brit ships heading north and then get bottled up and bombed in a French port? If Captain Lindemann had control then the Bismarck could've survived!
@@donaldshotts4429 At that time the air battle for Britain was at its peak or almost over. So the Germans did not think that British bombers could be a problem.
@@knutritter461 True, but I still think it seemed fatalistic of Lutjens to continue south with a damaged ship against a greater concentration of Brit heavy ships. If he had enough fuel for France then he could've looped around the Brits I'm the Artic Sea and reached northern Norway if need be. He'd be under Luftwaffe support and I doubt many Brit ships could come anywhere close. The Victorious aircraft would still had a chance but they missed in real life anyway.
@@donaldshotts4429 The Atlantic is HUGE.... the amount of ships does not matter because battles like the battle of Jutland were not pursued by the UK and Nazi-Germany.
@@donaldshotts4429 Lütjens did what he could with the impossible mission he was given, Bismarck could not have sunk POW as at that point Bismarck was damaged with reduced speed and fuel, wasting your fuel to try and sink a Battleship that already to far, is not kinda not the best idea. You see he kinda can't go back to Norway, by this point Lütjens had practically known that German intelligence is not very reliable, at the start of Operation Rheinübung, the German intelligence had told Lütjens that he shouldn't encounter HMS Hood or any King George V-class battleship, and we all know where that ended. So in Lütjens's eyes, POW could be leading him into a much more heavier force, so he's not looping back to Norway, he's not taking his chances goin back to Norway with the chance of encountering more British ships. France was the only choice, going to Norway is like going straight to the storm as British forces will be between him and Norway. If Lindemann commanded Bismarck, they would have survived for a day and not 3
You really should do the Battle of Shiroyama. It was the last battle of the Satsuma rebellion and the last stand of the Samurai. 500 Samurai facing a force of 30 000 imperial Japanese troops.
Hood was built with thin deck armour to meet a treaty tonnage limit. Upgrades were planned but the British government wanted it for international PR and continually refused to allow the refit to happen. She was in effect sunk by her own government. And a lucky hit from Bismarck.
Hood wasn't subject to any tonnage treaty restriction. She was built before such treaties applied, and was heavily modified during construction. She was, in effect, a fast battleship rather than a true battlecruiser, with armour on a par with that of the Queen Elizabeths. She was actually scheduled for modernisation after the work on Queen Elizabeth was completed, but the outbreak of war prevented this.
There is no "lucky" hit from bismarck. The Hood had literally no Armor matching the 15" superior Shells from the Bismarck. The Hood would have sunk anyways.
really excellent video. How accurate are the ship movements such as the close up of the final engagement? Would love to see a similar video done about the Battle of Surigao Strait at Leyte Gulf when Admiral Oldendorf’s battleship task force engaged IJN Admiral Nishimuro’s Southern Force and the last time a battleship formation “capped the T”. Thanks for the video 👍🏻
If the Bismarck reach quickly to the safe zone prior to the day she meet HMS Hood, they have 3 days to get there to the safe zone. She will be supported and backup with U-boats and will be save. Because there voyage is no longer safe in that very moment after they sunk HMS Hood its expected to be hunted with allies.

Every time a ship sinks is a loss in human lives. Thus said, every battleship that sinks it's a tragedy: when i was teenager i met during a WW2 research a former sailor who was on italian Battleship Roma. Speaking about the ship, his eyes were broad and shiny ad he could see the ship. Aggressive and elegant, powerful and lean, he said. Then it came to the sinking... He had to stop a long, speaking of how they had to lock ports on their comrades trying to keep the ship afloat. He said he could hear them call for help but they had to lock nevertheless. Never saw any other eyes so dark and so full of sorrow and remorse... And then the battle hardened vet broke down in tears. I can never forget.
@John Cornell no ship is impervious to damage. It was able to hold off and sink Royal Navy ships in a fair 2v2 fight, but when you go against 7 other ships at the same time it doesn't really matter how good your ship is lol. I've seen your other comments and noticed you are extremely biased toward the British. A closed mind is a wonderful thing to lose.
She met with a supply shit Spichern to refuel and sailed down south to hunt said merchants, and after Bismarck was sunk and Eugen's engines defected, she was ordered to head to France, joining Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Brest.
Well that true, but that only happened after the war, as the Allies were splitting the remains of German and Japanese navy among them. And when for example british examined the type XXI U-Boot, Americans took Prinz Eugen and a lot of other vessels (Japanese and even their own) and used them as a target for underwater nuclear bomb explosions at Bikini Atol, as a part of Operation Crossroads
She now lies 4.800 m under the surface upright and largely intact on her keel. The water inrush as she slid below the surface ripped off her stern, she briefly inverted, losing her gun turrets and on righting herself, had the bridge superstructure torn off. This sank independently. When she hit the bottom, the backwash was so immense that she was slewed several hundred metres over the seabed, bashing the bridge superstructure like a football with her bows. And there she lies as a silent commemoration to 2.200 lost lives.
Well done! This is a beautifully illustrated story of the victory over the Bismarck. Interesting useless bit of info: I built a scale model of the Bismarck years ago.
Another factor that made Lutjens go for St. Nazaire was the "Normandie Dock." This was the only dry dock available that could handle a ship the size of Bismarck necessary to repair the underwater damage without returning to Wilhelmshaven. During the final battle, KGV opened the range to get plunging hits on the deck with armor-piercing shells while Rodney moved in and attacked the superstructure with "common" high-explosive rounds.
Really Dorsetshire's single torpedo hit did little damage. Being the Bismark's superstructure already largerly underwater, the torpedo hit the ship near to the seaplane's catapult. The very low metacentric height of the Bismark made it nearly impossible to capsize (but it made it a worse shooting platform in exchange, due to the very short roll time), but the ship was sinking anyway.

Please do the Battle of Towton. It was one of the biggest battles of the medevil ages and the largest of the War of the Roses. A series on the Wars of the Roses would be even more incredible. Attempt #112
Attempt #7 at best! I have it noted somewhere... :)
Thank you for pointing out this truth about the U boats. Other videos by different media creators have covered this point.

Old doesn't always mean obsolete.
Love how the Prinz Eugen just pissed off and was like "They want the Bismark, lets get outta here under the pretext of 'raiding convoys'"
In the end the Yanks nuked it. It was the only capital ship to suffer that fate.

Nagato:Am I a joke to you?
Well, it followed orders. If you think about it, Lutjens was right. The most powerful ship in the task force was damaged and in need of repair, its mission was over. The least powerful ship was still operational, could still do some damage and the enemy would rather sink the bigger threat.
R.I.P HMS Hood.. We'll always remember you in our hearts
@Meimme Wolf Not really, no. Just outdated and in need of a refit.
@Meimme Wolf Seems unlikely
Superbly illustrated. Really puts everything into perspective. Best explanation I've seen thus far about the chase for the Bismarck.
You completly forgot about what happened after Ark Royals torpedo attacks - the best part of the story. 5 Destroyers where fighting with Bismarck for 8 hours.
Indeed. In a film adaptation that would be an epic sequence.
That 270-degree turn by the Bismarck was genius. The Germans were unlucky that the oil leak was accidentally detected.
There is no such thing as luck.

Navy tactics: whoever brings more guns to the fight wins.

The navy game is to use intelligence in a manner that enables coordinated superior concentrated firepower in a surprise attack.

I know I'm two years late, but Corona is about to keep us all stuck indoors again. Do more of these WWII naval battles, they're great.
Thanks to Tate for his impeccable knowledge on World History. Earlier he said about the RAF and Survivorship Bias.

A pity so many German lives were lost, but it must be remembered also that only 3, yes 3 of the 1500 crew of HMS Hood survived the engagement.
Why a pity?
Bruh its British fault that they sent pride of the fleet that was half wooden to fight Bismarck.
Its not their fault Hood was so outdated it only took 1 shell for it to blow up.
Thats British fault for sending such outdated ship on suicide mission
@@imma5761 That one shell exploded in the ammunition storage unit. That's why the ship blew up.
@@stevenwolfe7101 my point is that they still sent outdated ship to fight behemoth like Bismarck.
@@imma5761Unfortunately, war is rarely convenient. Although HMS Hood was in need of a long overdue overhaul, it was one of the few capital ships the Royal Navy had available that could match the speed of Germany's battleships. This video was very excitingly made.
Even though I knew that the mighty German Battleship was about to sink, I nearly and secretly hoped that all things will go well for her - because you just telled the story so goddamn excitingly.

Telled?! Told.
This would be the FW190 which only entered service, as a fighter, in August, 1941, would it?
My guess is that it sailed under radio silence to prevent it being found ands identified; the Germans were always certain that their code ("Enigma") had not been broken.
@@stevenwolfe7101 How do you know that? Ie. that the Germans knew their code had not been broken?
@@BasementEngineer It's in many books on the topic. Now and then someone on the German side suspected that perhaps their code(s) had been broken but they always expressed confidence that the codes were unbreakable. You can start with what was perhaps the first book on the topic "Bodyguard of Lies" and move on from there to any of many, many books on the topic.
Bismarck: ha! We sunk the hood!
Admiralty: You talking mad shit for someone within swordfish distance...
May he rest in peace and all the brave sailors on it 🙏
Man, I love the Malevolence arc.
Yes the Malevolence is based on the Bismarck.
Breaking the radio silence was the turning point.
Sending her alone was the another mistake.
Lütjens was unaware that British had already lost Bismarck, that's why he broke radio silence since he thought that Bismarck was still being shadowed. Bismarck was the only ship damaged, Prinz Eugen was still undamaged meaning she could still continue the mission of commerce raiding
Beautifully informed. Honestly was interesting and was made incredibly. Job well done.

What happen to the Prinz Eugen?
She met with a supply shit Spichern to refuel and sailed down south to hunt said merchants, and after Bismarck was sunk and Eugen's engines defected, she was ordered to head to France, joining Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in Brest.
Lehr9807
Wasn’t there a Prinz Eugen in the US navy?
Well that true, but that only happened after the war, as the Allies were splitting the remains of German and Japanese navy among them. And when for example british examined the type XXI U-Boot, Americans took Prinz Eugen and a lot of other vessels (Japanese and even their own) and used them as a target for underwater nuclear bomb explosions at Bikini Atol, as a part of Operation Crossroads
She continued to raid till the end of the war where she was awarded to the United States which used her for nuclear tests.
Kept fighting until it found one nuky boi
Great Job

Really Dorsetshire's single torpedo hit did little damage. Being the Bismark's superstructure already largerly underwater, the torpedo hit the ship near to the seaplane's catapult.
The very low metacentric height of the Bismark made it nearly impossible to capsize (but it made it a worse shooting platform in exchange, due to the very short roll time), but the ship was sinking anyway.
