The problem started during the time of independence in 1962/1966. The "federo" agitators who wanted autonomy against the rest of Uganda discouraged Swahili language as FOREIGN and this affected how Swahili was perceived since the 1966 crisis!! Imagine 😢 We have to change and catch up with the rest of the East African Community countries ❤

Being left behind is the sadest truth. Universal communication lingo is obviously imperative especially in case of trading! We need to be proactive and enforce it widely. Imagine this; Swa' is being taught in South America in schools!! What do they know that we ignore? Knowledge is absolute power. We are curtailing our future generations by default. Swa' is a trading lingo within our boarders and much more in the future. With the borderless developments being enacted across the continent, only a well prepared individual is better prepared and better off above all others that are limited in communication. Therefore I implore those it concerns to get out of our comfort zones and dedicate a few hours of learning Swa', even a little bit at a time.

Uganda is somewhat a unique case country. Swahili was used by the army, police, thugs and criminal gangs as a preferred language of use to oppress, subjugate, torture and terrorise the masses during the times of Idi Amin and Obote. This made most people in Uganda regard it as language of oppression and intolerance. And thus avoiding it. I’m glad that now the Ug gov has adopted it and it’s going to be compulsory in schools.

The issue is Banganda with their 'ebyafwe' a narrative that was adopted in 1950's meaning all they had before colonialism including language had to be restored. Since then they have been trying to impose their language upon every Ugandan to the point that in 2003 it was tabled in parliament to decide between the two (kiswahili and luganda) which one should be national. I remember vividly 70%members voted Kiswahili to be promoted as a national language. But because everything is concentrated in Kampala, the Baganda who lost became angry and so promotion of kiswahili stalled till todate. So sad.

Swahili is spoken in other regions outside the central part which is with in buganda kingdom, but still not widely spoken coz in Uganda we have active kingdoms and chiefdoms so local languages and cultures are emphasized by these kingdoms,Kampala is with in buganda kingdom and thats why luganda is spoken so much.
Luganda is the most spoken language but not by the majority of the population so its not the national language,if nairobi and Darelsaalam were with in active kingdoms you would understand, coz like every active kingdom around the world language and culture is emphasized,so don't be quick to judge us ugandans.

There is no need at all to "promote" any foreign language in any of the member countries of the East African Community (EAC) common market. After all, it is the terms of trade that determine what goods or services will be traded and not language. Were that not the case, we in EAC would not be trading with any other country around the world at all. If some member countries of the EAC have failed to "promote" their indigenous languages since independence, and instead have allowed a foreign language such as Swahili to be their official language, that is not anyone's fault but theirs. There is no reason why we should be spending our meagre resources on the instruction of yet another foreign language in addition to English, when we have a rich diversity of our own indigenous languages that we could "promote" in Uganda. A multilingual EAC will never hurt anyone, but we will never be forced to abandon our indigenous languages, for the sake of our EAC membership.

Let me make it clear to you that Swahili is a foreign language in Uganda, hardly anyone speaks it, and it was rejected way back in the 1930s during the colonial era in east Africa. The Kiswahili-speaking population in the areas of Uganda you have sighted don't even amount 5 million people in each one of them. That would be an insignificant population compared to the remaining 40 to 50 million in the whole country. So, it should be obvious to you that hardly anyone speaks the language in Uganda.
On the other hand, Luganda, which is spoken and understood by well over 75% to 80% of the whole country is the leading indigenous language in Uganda and rightly so. It is now the lingua franca of the country and the language of commerce as well as entertainment. Inevitably, the regime in power has conceded to the obvious, by allowing it to be taught in all our institutions of learning in addition to English, the official language of Uganda, which is still compulsory. It won't be long before Luganda is elevated to be one of the official languages of Uganda, and in the future the only one to replace English.
Swahili does not have a chance in Uganda since it is not as popular as Luganda or any other indigenous language of the country for that matter. It is a foreign language, which we should not be compelled to learn since we have a diversity of our indigenous languages to choose from with Luganda in the lead. Could you please respond in English and not Swahili. If you don't, this will be the end on my commentary. I can't stand being insulted and I will make sure that you don't.@@kisemboisaac502

So don't mislead people pls.
