I'd wait 10 years for a full restoration of DS9. The only way to preserve this outstanding series for the next generation is to make it watchable for years to come.
Not angry, in fact im very excited. Im sure many would agree that waiting a few more months for the best version is a lot better than getting an inferior version right now. While the wait is killing me, i'm absolutely certain the wait is worth it and if it helps persuade the studio into releasing a HD remaster of the series then that would be amazing.
As someone who was lucky enough to see it at the VIP Screening on an IMAX screen in Birmingham - The film Is great as it currently is, but yes, it needs a LOT more HD than the cut I saw. Only the Sacrifice Battle and that one shot here where in HD that I noticed - every other piece of show footage looked SD to me. Didn't detract from the film at all, the doc is great even without ANY Show footage at all - but I fully understand how important it is to have as much HD footage as you can in there, so I'm more than happy to wait because I know it "needs" it.
I am totally with you on quality over quick. Let’s aim for June 2nd 2019, the 20th anniversary of the last episode ‘What We Leave Behind’ and this will be WHAT WE REMEMBER FONDLY!

Saw the movie at Destination Star Trek in October. It's well worth the wait. The music, the HD scenes and the first outline of what could have been of season 8 had me smiling.
Thanks so much for the update! I know many are eager to see the final result and, speaking for myself, the wait will surely be worth it! Since the chances of us seeing all of DS9 in HD is rather slim, getting the opportunity to see everything in the doc in HD is definitely worth it! Looking forward to your next update!!!

I'm tickled pink that the little HD sampling we got here was from Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang. For a long time, it was my favorite DS9 episode. It's because of where my life was at in 2005, when I was 19 and in a very difficult and unpleasant situation. I'd come home at 3:30 in the morning after a half hour bike ride (no car) working an 11 hour job I was totally mismatched for. All I had for energy when I'd come home was to take a shower, and watch whatever was in my bedroom DVD player. I was so exhausted, I couldn't be bothered to pick something to watch, I just played what was in the player, which was a season 7 DVD disc. Of the four episodes on there, BBBB was perfect to watch before bed. It was a nice break from the more serious episodes, and became the only hour of the day that wasn't a living hell. As tough as those days were, it was nice ending my day with Avery Brooks and James Darren singing "The Best Is Yet To Come", and to go to bed with a modicum of hope to get me through another one of those unbearably long days.
More than willing to wait. Please continue the epic work being done. Doing something right, is often set aside. Thank you standing up. Thank you for all of the fun update clips over time. This has been great.
I just finished Ds9 again :p and really really wish there was more to watch, it was the best star trek in my opinion and I'm so excited to see this documentary.

Why not pitch this Remaster to CBS as an All Access Exclusive? That would draw alot more customers in and keep them and who knows Voyager could be done after.
I'm annoyed! I'm angry! I want to vent! I'm mad that CBS still hasn't seen the wisdom of updating DS9 to HD on their own dime! This series is ripe for a new run, the rest of television has caught up to serialized storytelling and nuanced characters and ethnic diversity and strong female characters and flawed heroism, but owners of the franchise CBS don't care, they would rather make a few pennies on piddly SD syndication deals than dollars on in-demand HD offerings! Yes, the clumsy way TNG's HD conversion went down soured them, but come on, this is a legacy series begging to be seen by a new generation! As for this DS9 Doc, I'm still willing to wait for it to be done right.
I am currently rewatching this now, this was the best of all the Star Treks, all the characters. Sisko is the best Captain. Bashir would get booted out of StarFleet for sexual harassment these days
I fully appreciate the wish for HD footage but this was screened without the need for HD clips last year. It would be nice to have a download copy to watch until the HD bluray is ready to go.
I'm conflicted, as an early backer I am getting to a point of "just release it already!" But it's true that this a great opportunity to get DS9 in HD. And maybe, just maybe, CBS will see the passion the fans and creators have for the show and do a remastering of the entire series. That would be well worth the wait! I would encourage you, Ira, to tease out more material though. Even if it's stuff you don't plan to use in the film just throw us a bone now and then until you're finished!
Nobody likes waiting but nobody likes a job halfdone either. Just please tell me you’re not going to be cropping the HD footage to 16:9 in the actual documentary. All that time, money and work to restore the picture and messing with the aspect ratio? No. Respect the product as it was.
LFGS I heard most of it is better than TNG where they often had equipment outside the 4:3 window making it unsuitable for 16:9 broadcast but it’s still not done. Even if they made sure nothing inappropiate got in the wider 16:9 shot the show was not composited that way. DS9 was composited in 4:3. They may have used a canvas capable of 16:9 that indeed captured 16:9 but they painted in 4:3. That’s how the shots were lined up. If they wanted us to see what’s to the side they would have included it in the 4:3 box. Showing what’s outside the shot as intended messes with the artists vision and that’s not done.
Yup. No Trek TV series pre-Enterprise was ever shot with 16:9 in mind. I seem to recall reading somewhere there was discussion of the possibility somewhere along the end of DS9 and middle of Voyager production, but the final call was standard 4:3 until they started making Enterprise. There's even a note on Memory Alpha that the director of the first Enterprise episodes weren't sure if it was going to be widescreen or not.
I'm happy to wait. I keep forgetting about this, and then remembering again when an announcement like this comes along to remind me. One thought though... the supposed "high def" clip in this video seems pretty soft to me. The colours are nice and its widescreen and all, but I was expecting it to be a bit sharper and crisper than this. Perhaps its just UA-cam and it's crappy compression.
Ryan Spooner my guess is it’s UA-cam..the quality looked a bit soft to me as well but then I was on crappy WiFi, disconnected and the quality looked way better
Well, YT quite happily does super sharp 4k 60fps video if you ask it to. There is no "crappy compression" to speak of, if A) data is uploaded in full quality and B) you set your viewer manually to best quality. But let's be honest, for a video like this, sending in a little-to-non-compressed video clip on a project status update is perhaps an overkill :D Or perhaps this is simply the case of the original film being.. blurry. Maybe the camera operator didn't do a better job than that of focusing that particular scene ;)
Well you can't it right after the fact. Like you said, if this is the only opportunity for the foreseeable to put as much love into DS9 as possible, the logical and commendable decision is to do it right.
I don't mind waiting. I personally don't care much about HD. Been watching my DVDs for the past 15+ years without it. But I do care about the opportunity that has been presented here to upgrade DS9 for future releases. Re-scan as much DS9 film into HD as you can, Ira. I look forward to the day that I can watch the whole series, in remastered glory. CBS Television, take note!
I'm happy to wait, since I was never in any rush to see the result. I just want it to be good! But although I realize it was done for comedic effect (I found it hilarious) there was no need to so obviously mess with the video comparison. We all know the SD/DVD quality and how it looks. That's not it :) For anyone interested, here's a direct comparison: drive.google.com/open?id=1l6TT2trNm0E40NDlSja4823FrKhFeWtw Personally I think it would be a shame to crop out all the 4:3 image data in favor of showing the width and cropping to 16:9. I understand this is a style choice, but seeing as we're all used to the 4:3 ratio, we would actually be losing as much as we're gaining. Perhaps just keep it in full and uncropped 3:2 and let us see everything?
Any chance of you putting in new material than what was shown at the screening? Perhaps another interview or two. *cough* Avery Brooks *cough* or perhaps more behind the scenes / never before scene footage of the show being made?

I understand this is a style choice, but seeing as we're all used to the 4:3 ratio, we would actually be losing as much as we're gaining. Perhaps just keep it in full and uncropped 3:2 and let us see everything?
Well worth the wait for real trek.
Here's a new target date to aim for: June 2, 2019, the 20th anniversary of DS9's finale. It's worth the wait!
I waited this long.. I can wait a bit longer for DS9 in HD... even if it's only a few select clips
Whatever happen to ds9 movies?
Jose Ventura as much chance of Enterprise getting a movie!
Any chance of you putting in new material than what was shown at the screening? Perhaps another interview or two. *cough* Avery Brooks *cough* or perhaps more behind the scenes / never before scene footage of the show being made?
Not even a tentative date? Come on guys. Wasn't it last month they said it's about to be released? Maybe March?
