Thank you to the restorer for saving crucial Pontiac history and reuniting a living legend with a car even he was searching. Can't make that up. Classy.
7 years after this posting, still a very interesting story between man and machine. Back in the day, Pontiac had some awesome people in their division. The history of Pontiac starting back with Oakland, is so interesting.
I guess time alone prohibits engineers at Pontiac to post comments or engineers associated with so many other muscle cars of that era /. would add another dimension to a dialog
My dad sold Pontiacs in '63. Picked me up at school one day in a Tempest - brand new right off the truck! He owned '62 Bonneville at the time. I didn't recognize him sitting there in the Tempest even as he tooted the horn.. I finally heard his voice...we laughed.. I jumped in and he started giving me the sales pitch about Pontiac's newest "little" car. Salesman to the end...
@@V8TV man...what a time that was in the automotive industry. I think we're seeing the end of it as Electric starts to transition and take over. That being said, we're going out in a blaze! 🤟 "there's nooo substitute for horsepower.
What a superb car story. .Back in the day I had a subscription to Hot Rod magazine...Sure this car and Stan were in those pages...Now reborn. Stan did say how clean the restore was.
This the Best Episode of "Muscle Car of The Week" I have seen. The explanations about the specifications that Mr. Anlocer shared, are Second to None of all I have seen in the UA-cam "MCW". There is nothing like "FIRST HAND STORIES" THANK YOU.
I had one of these. But it had the 2 speed automatic in the rear with a half a V-8 and 4 barrel carb. the torque converter was on the engine and it had a covered drive shaft that bolted the engine to the trains axle rear end. the half a V-8 had the left side cylinders cut off and one barrel per cylinder!
Kid at school had one with the rope drive and I seem to remember a dashboard shift lever. Pontiac wasnt afraid to try new stuff gotta give them that nice car.
Is that the one that was on Ebay a while back? Bidding had gone up to $600 until an astute viewer noticed it was an original '63 Tempest Super Duty and the bidding went through the roof.
GREAT car and an awesome story teller. I would love to sit and talk 1 on 1 w/Stan. What i find interesting is the car in the background at the 2:50 mark. It appears to be a 66 Dodge Charger, but it looks burnt and has a trophy on it. Must be some crazy rare car the have that besides all the beauties in this collection. Glen
+glen cyr I believe that's a burned Hemi Charger that was sold on ebay a year and change ago. Not too surprising it came to this collection, these brothers are diverse in their tastes for sure.
Whatever happened to Tim Benko and the Bill Knafel Anderson Pontiac "Running Bear" driven by Arlen Vanke? I was around 12 years old when Tim found that car here in my town of Elyria, Ohio. He was plowing snow at a local trailer park and seen the Tempest.. upon further inspection he seen the access panel in the trunk for the original quickchange rearend.. all the original aluminum body panels were present except for the hood.. and it had no engine or trans. Just like the white tempest in this video, the original rearend was swapped out for a larger third member style pontiac rearend from a different model. He seen it had heater and radio deletes in it and he just KNEW that car was something special. He offered the owner $2500 and they accepted his offer!! I seen that car at Tim's shop (because my dad was friends with Tim.. and my dad raced 409 Chevy's) many times over the followiing few years as he finished the restoration. Now its been about 20 years since ive seen Tim and/or the car. Periodically ill check online for new posts/details on the car but all I ever find is the one single video of the car in 2006 at Norwalk when Arlen seen the car for the first time since 63. Would love to know the current status of Running Bear if anyone has any updated information. Thank!
Too bad they didn’t include the story of how it was found, how it was listed and what it sold for it’s a great story unto itself. But it’s amazing seeing S Driver and car reunited w the car. That’s what it’s about right there.
The prestige of your collection is greatly enhanced by this car. Despite the “world’s fastest Pontiac” speed claim, it’s about 30 mph short of its factory-prepped ancestor which, on the banked oval of Daytona, humiliated Ferraris and race-prepped Corvettes. The Super Duty paved the way for the muscle car generation that followed, and in addition was successful in both stock car and drag racing. And, it validated the visionary credentials of the man who created it from a modest economy car: John DeLorean.
Nice video and story. I remember watching The Stan LOng and Royal Pontiac race cars at "Sibley and Dix" (Detroit Dragway) back in the 60's. Great stuff with all the factory backed Super Stocks.
Arnie the farmer beswick got one of these cars in the nines back in early 65 I believe no nitrious either! He was the first in the nines not a Chevy no mopar no ford a lowly Pontiac my friend!
I had a '67 Tempest with the not well known, but mentioned here, 326 HO...beyond a hotter cam and 4 barrel dual exhaust they also had slightly higher compression. I forget the factory HP rating...I want to say 245 but they were pretty darn fast. I beat a couple camaros and even a '68 Bullitt Highland Green Mustang GT with a 390.
SO, COOL THOSE TWO WHERE HOOKED BK UP AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS !! HOW MANY TIMES DOES THAT HAPPEN. . I PERSONALLY WOULD BE HAPPY TO BE REUNITED WITH MY TOTALLY ORIGINAL 1968 RALLY SPORT Z/28 BRITISH RACING GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPES , 302 CUBIC INCH 290 HP. . It is such an impeccable restoration, the only bummer is they missed the mark by putting autometer gauges in it instead of sourcing some vintage period correct gauges that were used in the car, the amount of money paid for the car & then the cost of restoration, it could have easily been done.......attention to detail
I had a schoolmate that had oneof these that had a 26 V/8 in it. They came with a trans axle. He blew four of those out so Pontiac .cut the tranny housing out for his and installed a four speed tranny in it. It went like hell but then he got drunk one night and totalled the car.
My only complaint about this episode is that it is to short....need more ASAP!!! Love seeing Stan reunited with this car!!
If that's my wife, I can't believe that
Thanks for sharing this video. It is really great to see someone reunited with their car many years later. I would love to do this for my dad.

A mini gto ...love the 63 tempest!
It's great to see the connection between the man and the car. I will always be a Pontiac fan.
Always. I'll die as Pontiac enthusiast.
What a fantastic machine! Would be a blast to drive. Enjoyed this video very much.
Great story with a personal touch, love Muscle car of the week!!

I think Pontiac has one of the most unique history among GM and very sadly but not surprisingly they where put to sleep a few years ago.

I really enjoyed this video and reunion story. Stan remembered that car like it was yesterday. Very cool!
Classic car and classic Stan Antlocer.
Beautiful car- the hand lettering is so nice. Great show guys 👍👍👍
Impeccable restoration..... 8:11 Bliss

Great video. It's nice to see the original owner with the car. Lot of memories there.
It was great to see the original racer. You guys should do more of that.

The 63 Tempest 421 SD is the baddest Pontiac ever made. No question about it
Great video.Thanks
That is a sweet Tempest Gotta love the old Pontiac
Awesome story 👏
That's awesome
Very Nice and Thumbs Up ! Liked your video.
A fabulous car!!
Been cool if they gave him the keys to keep. Great story.
Good one
amazing piece of history
Great Stuff

I saw this car sell at Russo 7 Steel several years ago
For me, it's 61 through 72 Pontiacs..
Wow...when that engine turns over...
In the mid 70s, I owned a 64 tempest with 389 and three speed on the tree. Sure wish I had it back. I don't know if it was stock, but I sure liked it.
tom jarvis, original tempest had a 326 V8 engine option and A/T transaxle in the rear. 389 was not an engine option nor a manual transmission.
The car had the aerodynamics of a brick. Today, the car would likely be in the low 10's.
The 326 ci was really a under bored and under stroked 389 big block. The 389 and 326 weighed about the same and can be easily swapped.
Pontiac never had a big block!
I had a '67 Tempest with the not well known, but mentioned here, 326 HO...beyond a hotter cam and 4 barrel dual exhaust they also had slightly higher compression. Steve Fowler, only two "Bullitt" Mustang were ever built in 1968. Both had 400+ HP 390 engines in them. No way that you ever beat either of them.

0 - 123 mph in 11 seconds ahhhhh = Missile::::::::::::::::
I had a "63"auto. Full house 389, 2-4's, rollers and all. Great car for the street, but low gears were way to expensive for an every day driver.
Bobby Wilson, no 389 engine with dual quads from the factory in 1963. Only dual quad engine was the 421 SD in 1963.
I had a schoolmate that had oneof these that had a 26 V/8 in it. They came with a trans axle. He blew four of those out so Pontiac .cut the tranny housing out for his and installed a four speed tranny in it. It went like hell but then he got drunk one night and totalled the car.
I got a 63 tempest in need of help
Want to sell her?
Just watch the video of a car like this with a 4 cylinder from the factory in its running 12.12 in the quarter mile And its naturally aspirated
122.95? What was that? A Joe Biden gaffe? The lettering clearly says "123.95."
