Made a homemade axel seal tool for a ford focus. 2" emt coupling 1" and 1/2 lenth 10 " pipe and 1" 1/2 × 2" reducer 1" 1/2 end cap and duct tape the 2" emt coupling to the reducer and take one of the locking ring off and drive that oil seal in the tight hole.
@wdsanchez5 I have a video posted with an updated version of the tool to press the output shaft seal into the transmission housing more simple than the previous version I posted. 1" 1/2" ×12 long nipple galvanized pipe and 1"1/2"x 2" reducer galvanized and one 2" emt male. Look at the video I posted on the Ford focus
I struggled with installing the seals and tried a few homemade or found objects, but finally gave up went to the Depot and grabbed the coupling for less than $3. I had milled the end of a 4" x 4" to fit the seal but it was too chunky to drive it all the way home, but it was perfect to stick the coupling right on the end. A good tap held it there on the wood block and gave me something to whack with my mallet. Finished the driver's side and did the passenger side in about the time it took to type this, by flashlight in the dark. Best tool for the job by far. I should have done this right at the start. It's exactly 55mm and you couldn't design a better tool for the job than this coupling. I had my control arms off because when one 24 year old axle broke I decided to get a whole front end kit because it was so cheap at Rock Auto. Removing everything was not fun, I had to drill out everything on the drivers side control arm/ball joint to knuckle, Impact wouldn't break or even turn the upper bolts once I got them to move, but it's all gravy now, those seals were the last thing that was holding things up. Good one man!
@Scheme2sheisty in the comments there is someone who 3D printed this, that's the way to do this. But got it from Freedom Racing, Ebay has them at times.
The physical seal on the 2003 was the same on mine. There is a small bump out on the passenger side that interferes with the full circle seal installer on the Automatic anyway. I actually passed my seal installer on to @focusedhands, I really was not going to use it anymore. Check out his page for some stuff on the Focus. I think this will link to his page. ua-cam.com/channels/H04_YVJxOln-GaHtmMcaww.html
The ones I see would have a hard time only due to this has a cage around the inner race. Don't see how to add pictures in this reply. But that looks opposite of what I think would work. It needs to be more of a bowl that hits the outer part of the seal. The HF front wheel drive bearing installer and remover looks to have some rings that might work. It's only $100, you get alot more for your money. I was doing this on the cold garage floor so it's absolutely possible that in better working conditions there is a lot easier and less expensive solution to this one. I hate tossing $ out the window, kinda just ran out of ideas and just went with the high end tool.
RockAuto lists the Manual Trans seal as a Timken 224020 and the photo they show does not have a cage around it like the Auto Trans seal. If you look it up it's under Driveline then Differential seal, they are both shown and you can see the difference. I think a standard much less expensive or a homemade set up could work for the manual Trans. I always try to buy an extra seal or 2, if they are cheap enough. Good luck with your fix.
@@timd32 I was referring to the TOOL that your using not the SEAL itself, I was wondering if that TOOL your using works for the seal on a manual transmission...
@@atlred if you have the seal can you measure the inside hole and the outside Rim of the thick part of the seal and see if that MT seal is flat metal across the face? I will measure the inside and outside of the tool. I actually gave away my set up to @focusedhands since I was not going to use it, not sure that will tag him, see his comments a little farther down the list. He has done this on a MT, I've only done AT. My vote is yes try it if you have the tool, but do not buy this for just that seal is my thinking. It's way expensive for that style seal. 2 things, the normal universal seal installers will probably work for the MT seal, and most big box auto parts stores have free loaners so you can bring the seal in and place it on the tool in the autoparts store. Post up some measurements of the seal and I can do that later this afternoon after work.
I scored an extra one along the way, if you flip me an address will be happy to pass on the driver part jdctechnicalservice at gmail, all you would need is the handle. Looks like a C-4171A or a C4171-3 would work. Have not purchased from here but has a good price. www.tillmantools.com/miller-mopar-tools-c-4171a-universal-driver-hand-p/MSTC-4171A.htm If not check out Freedom Racing, they are pricey but it worked when I needed it.
I just did this job and didn't have the right tool to install - if you have a 3d printer I designed a tool that will make this job 100000X easier - it's on printables "2004-2011 Ford Focus Output Shaft Seal Installer - CV Axle"
Very cool. I don't have a printer( though this seemed like a good enough reason to get one) but I just sent the .stl over to my library to print. I started with passenger side, but I guess I'll tear into drivers side so I can use the full print on that, then if I have to I'll remove some material for the passenger side. Just looks like about 10-15% of the circle is cut straight off with nothing supporting the seal. I got the old one out, but didn't see why this is necessary, I'll have to take a closer look, it may help me retool for passenger side. Thanks a lot. Not really a tool I want to buy for a 24 year old car
Done! The print, not the seal, $0.95. I should have had them make 2. Thanks again, it would have taken me a min I'm sure if I'd decided to buy a printer and do it myself. Kinda hard to beat my library, only pay for filament.
Sorry missed this comment in my email. I have not done that prior but freedom does rentals. Also local autoparts places do free loaners if you can find like the handle local and just rent the driver. www.freedomracing.com/rental-program

When you remove the axle seal, is there supposed to be trans fluid dripping? Or not?
Yes, there usually will be some fluid that comes out.
