Massive Attack for me the best “Trip Hop” band. A great band to check out, each song equally bringing this intensity and ingenuity. Great Reaction.

The beats to me sounds like Nine Inch Nails with a rapper featured in it, and how they let the let atmosphere do the talking then the rapper, that's pretty innovative and rare to have independent producers to think of some unique.

Don't you dare say that one of the best analogue breakbeat tracks to ever make it on a record is something sampled from a random dance track. It was a club hit in some circles (some of the rave scene), though Europe was going trough a house phase by this time. Also, the UK music was darker and grittier (the prodigy, massive attack, portishead) than what was going on in the US (the chemical brothers, the chrystal method, moby), which you somehow interpret as "pretty experimental". There's no electronic music without "pretty experimental", though.

I absolutely love this song. But dud,e the song with the fight scenes. Thats how it was meant to be. Blade vs nomak. Two of a kind.

Song came out in 2002, so not exactly "old school".

anything can sound oldschool despite the release/producing time. in fact, it definitely sounds oldschoolish, the 808s got some old sampler colors on em which is considered an oldschool vibe and a lot of producers try to emulate/get their hands on something like sp-1200 to add that color to the sound(s)

You're focusing on Mos Def, but said nothing about the British Band Massive Attack. Listen to their music - they do a lot of collaborations with many different artists (including a few movie soundtracks).
