How The U.S. Fell Dangerously Behind In Coronavirus Testing

- The deadly coronavirus pandemic has stopped the world in its tracks, and exposed a weak spot in the United States’ preparedness for a public health emergency. Experts say aggressive diagnostic testing is essential in order to learn where and how an epidemic spreads. But in the critical first weeks of the outbreak in the U.S., one problem after another prevented doctors, clinics, and labs around the country from testing enough people. Patients in America were being sent home as hospitals rationed their test supply, while other countries like South Korea found a way to test hundreds of thousands of people quickly. Now, the U.S. is months behind in understanding the true scope of the virus. Testing capacity is finally ramping up, but is it too late?

"our healthcare system is the best in the world"?!
According to who? No educated person has ever made that claim. The US has a few of the best hospitals, but it also has most of the worst. The US has the lowest access to healthcare of any 1st world nation. And one of the lowest life-spans because of it.
Nobody is surprised that the US health system is falling apart before the epidemic even gets close to full-swing.
Even Italy is going to laugh at the US ineffectiveness when this is over. Does anyone believe that poor Americans will stop going to work, and give all their money to a doctor, who can't help them anyway?
No chance.
Exactly, we just keep telling ourselves, we have the best, these things don’t happen here in America. Until we have to put our money where our mouth is.

Nothing To See Here this is extremely bias and misleading, the US has a much higher population than any other country with socialized health care so on per capita rate individuals in the US live longer. I live in Canada and the health care is absolutely a mess. Simple things can take up to 3-24 hours just to get looked at due to the government being in charge of health care. With the amount of income tax and federal tax that I’m being taxed in Canada I can receive care that is much better in the US for even cheaper. The idea of socialized health care is a joke. The U.S privatized system makes it that you can get in and out quick while receiving great care. The health care is not falling apart in America and by saying it without providing evidence is absolutely misleading and ignorant.

Why would anyone believe the US has the best healthcare system in the world? (1:03) Sure, the US has some of the best medical care available (at a high cost), but the system is trash. It's the most expensive in the world yet it's also the worst performer on most measures compared with other wealthy (and some non-wealthy) countries.
Maybe by GDP measurement, it's the highest so they think it's the best.
The US has the best healthcare system when it comes to rich people.
US has the best military defence force, however......
We have some of the best hospitals and treatment centers in the world (Houstonian here). But saying we have the best health care system is wrong...or at least very misleading.
According to the WHO (World Health Organization) they ranked the US Health Care at 22nd in the world. And yet Americans pay more for their health expenditures per capita than any other country in the world. So they pay the *most* and don't get the best. What's the explanation for this? Well, I'd say the insurance companies eat up a considerable amount of that money. For those insurance companies the worth of their stock is worth more than the health and lives of those who pay for medical insurance.
Get suckered by the middleman. And now it's all too clear what that has led to.
The German test kit was released on january 17. By feb 4, when CDC released its own, faulty, test, WHO already shipped 250.000 reliable test kits worldwide.
Honestly, I have no idea why they didn't simply use the German ones which were already known to be working. Or why they didn't involve as many labs as possible like Germany did.

We are STILL behind in testing!!! I've been sick and self-isolated for over two weeks, was told I didn't qualify for testing all during the first week despite age, symptoms and travel, finally got tested on Thursday, March 20th and STILL waiting for results 9 days later. They're not even testing healthcare workers now???? Not only are not enough people getting tested it's taking too long to get results so the accurate numbers will never be known. The numbers of positive cases right now needs to be at least tripled. Those numbers are vital for understanding how this pandemic has progressed and also for preparations for the future. What a travesty this mess is. I'm honestly embarrassed for America.
Christina, getting a test wont make you better, yes more tests are needed but the reason the ones currently available go to those in bad condition is because in the event that this isnt covid 19, then different care is needed.
@@frankyisadikted that is how Sweden is handling testing, but more so to free-up resources going to high risk. 1,000's of people have been tested for the virus but Swedish authorities are now moving away from testing every suspected case and instead focusing on protecting those people in vulnerable groups, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. That means anyone with any symptoms of the coronavirus (including a fever, cough or sore throat) is advised to stay at home and limit all social contact until they have been symptom-free for at least two to three days. If they are healthy they may well not be tested for the virus so that resources can be used for high priority cases.
The FDA failed to develop an effective testkit the first time. That alone was a minor catastrophe. Then the FDA and CDC were found to be incapable of high speed production and distribution of testkits, to be followed by rapid analysis to produce results. The good news is that private businesses had picked up the slack, and but needed regulatory approvals and funding to proceed which they are now doing. Mass manufacturing takes time, but it is happening on many fronts.
The other one half of the problem is that while the federal government was prepared with stockpiles in compliance with funded, 2017 federal Pandemic Preparedness legislation, many states, local city governments, and hospitals were not compliant. Governors and mayors like those for NYC and New Orleans have to learn to be compliant in their preparations, and shut down as soon as a president begins doing things like closing all flights from China and initiating quarantines for the first time in fifty years as announced on Jan. 29.

2thomas k The CDC screw up was so basic in terms of technical problems, it only shows how severe the lack of professional staffing is in Trump’s government agencies. The faulty test problem should have been detected at the CDC lab before it was released. We have systemic federal government failure and erosion of expertise by Trump’s own design. And the nation will pay a heavy price in death toll and economic carnage. “Draining the swamp” aka vacancies and cuts to agencies will cost us trillions of dollars in destroyed economy.

When they say airborne that's a very narrow definition, the flu isn't airborne either by the same definition but it definitely spreads through the air when people cough.

US healthcare in terms of infrastructure gets a D.
A bit too generous on the grading.
yet 90% of medicine and equipment that is used in Canada and Europe is American made. Can you explain to me why the same pills you can get in my country in Europe costs a fraction of the price that it does in America? I can but I want to hear your explanation.
@@orionide4032 The reason why pills or equipment in countries with socialised medicine cost less has nothing to do with the USA and everything to do with economies of scale. When countries buy medicine they have a higher purchasing power and leverage when making deals than an individual. Since the USA has no nationwide universal healthcare system, the individuals pay much more because they dont have any option. Thats the reason and its likely whatever your are thinking has little to with it as the USA is not the only one who creates medicine or medical equipment.
No ones Healthcare system can deal with this sort of thing.
based on what actually. that's a pretty empty statement which makes me think you have NO idea of what you are even talking about or grading?
I’m going to sleep wake me up when this is over.
Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea has the best healthcare systems in the world.. in Europe, Germany
sadly but they are much smaller countries than us, so they should have better control over their health care system. Still, we can't ignore the fact that our taxes being paid mostly for military instead of our most fundamental lives
The way these countries have handled this pandemic should be a lesson for all countries. Unfortunately, many people will suffer at the hands of their careless governments.
Oti Jeremiah No, Cuba’s health care isn’t as sophisticated as South Korea and Singapore and the affects aren’t as massive.
Smaller countries who spend less of defense are always going to have more money for healthcare. We cant leave the world without our military influence otherwise China and Russia will take that void and amass more power.

321heso that’s how the world works kid. If you have money you have priority
I’m rich and sick, just traveled, had a fever and still couldn’t get a test. So......that’s literally not how it works.
And the Massachusetts Transportation Authority (MBTA) still has operators and train conductors working.
There are around 100,000 test kits available per day. This would need thousands of nurses with ppe every day. Billions in expenses every week. And at that rate it would still take 9 years to test everyone. Where would you like to start?
Not really. Nurses don’t do any testing, the specialized instruments handle the testing. You need lab staff to test, true, but you’re limited in the number samples per kit AND number of kits available to test on. It won’t take YEARS to test even a whole state, perhaps a few weeks if there’s enough kits to run through the instruments.
The problem is that there’s not enough kits.
”best health care in the world” ?
if you're* rich, it's pretty amazing.
it's sad but most conservatives believe that. They live in a bubble where they don't hear about people regularly refusing medical services and opting to face certain death or permanent crippling... rather then face awful treatment that will hardly do anything, bankrupt their families, put them into inescapable debt and ruin their lives. Like the woman who recently got her leg torn to pieces under a train and refused even an ambulance.... or the countless women who give natural birth because they can't afford the tens of thousands to do it in hospitals.

We've totally dropped the ball on this. We need to take a cue from S. Korea and other Asian countries and test aggressively. Their 2 hour or less tests, and testing everyone that they even suspected of being sick (instead of discouraging ppl from getting tested) is why they were able to get ahead of this. They didn't even have to go on total lockdown like other countries, even their malls were open. I haven't had any national pride for years, but this drives home how inferior this country has become.
To everyone saying that the US is too big unlike South Korea, remember you are a federal government. States and cities could’ve taken initiative and prepared.
In the other countries, city mayors have different strategies. I read that Iloilo City in the Philippines, the mayor ordered testing kits from South Korea, university chemists made and donated alcohol to hospitals, and local businesses donated food and PPEs. You gotta look after your own turf at least.
Exactly, the USA had time to prepare for the testing part at least. If South Korea was able to create and distribute tests when there was very little cases, USA has no excuse because they ARE richer and definitely able to.
Unfortunately states and cities don’t have that kind of power or flexibility in the US. (Not that I disagree with your point).
yes, i hate when people try to use the size of our country as justification to not try things that work elsewhere. state governors really have the most power, they can even choose to defy the federal laws ie with medical marijuana. city mayors can be overridden by them like in mississippi so the governors are really the key and who we probably need to be looking to and putting blame on. our president is just fluff as far as many things are concerned and most of our laws vary from state to state. things from as small as whether or not you can switch lanes in an intersection to as large as death penalties.
if each state governor did what needed to be done, we could fare a lot better. my state is not testing anyone who is not sick enough to be hospitalized, which sort of sounds like the entire point of testing has gone over everyone's heads.
and also they have like thousand of congressman in HoS
the most hopeful and simple thought, "We are humans. We got this far in this funny world."
Can’t have confirmed cases if you don’t test.
I suspect how much it costs will determine who will get tested. So much for American ingenuity being accessible to all Americans.

The biggest problem for us here in the US is as he said breaking the behavior asking people to break from the everyday normal tasks to self isolate just for a while they could not hear of it regardless of warning but then having government officials also publicly not taking this serious was a big set back for people for then they lived on with no concern and this got to spread more than it should have and now here we are ....
The good news is is when the pandemic is over we can warehouse the testing devices together along with the ventilators that will arrive too late.
What makes you think it will ever be over , cause Trump said so ? Don't you see that there will be a similar virus mutation whenever nature gets around to it ?
This went out the window in January. Out of so many things to do, blocking travel from China was the only thing our Administration got right. That's an "F" for Fail.
Blocking travel was a good first step. But they should have either used the German’s test that they developed (which turned out to better than WHO’s test that was later developed) or prepared some other way for testing as well.
Blocking travel from China probably came from hatred rather than public health concerns since this administration’s intention has been sketchy this whole time
...I object to this whole comment and the answering comments ...no one expected this virus to be so violent .
1. The CDC sent out faulty test kits
2. The CDC refused testing in 47 states in February

Erin Shrader people would get mad whatever politicians say
Plus, most of those egotistical politicians are also on the payrolls of rich assholes.
The ironic part is that they gave Obama a hard time during the Ebola virus when he allowed 1 US citizen back into the country. There were around 10-20 cases and only 2 people died which is unfortunate but you can see the hypocrisy because they are now in power and don't even care. They want people to get back to work.
And what is the main reason why it takes so long to get anything FDA approved? Lawyers and fear of lawsuits.
After this crisis is over, we need to start cleaning house starting with the CDC
Nameless Progressive Clone woah woah the earth isn’t flat btw. China didn’t want this outbreak to occur as you think it did. It hurt their economy too.
No clearing the CDC would only hurt our preparation measures. We need to restructure some parts sure but taking it away or gutting it again like Trump did will hurt us more.
@ every step you proposed devastates US economy. IF they are conducted completely, it will start a greater depression from US. Many internationl organisations are under US influence such as WHO,IMF and WB, if you destroy them all, US will have much less internationl power projection. You can not say they are pro-China when almost all of these organizations' high-officials value US interests and receive lots of sponsorship from US(US still the biggest sponsor for big organisations). Take it easy, dude, your proposal is not helpful.
