As you can see if installed properly they take a very good bite. Biggest thing is to mark the pipe the proper depth so that you know it has gone into the fitting. Like most videos on UA-cam people have a tendency to watch just the first part of the video and move on to the next video to find an answer, but the end of this video has proven to me that if properly installed they would not pop off under normal circumstance. I have used Sharkbite fittings for repairs around my shop and home since stumbling upon them at Home Depot a few years ago and have never ever had any problems with them. They cost more than sweat fittings, but are so very simple to install. Or remove if need be. Im in the prep stage of rerouting my water lines at home due to slab leak. Your review gives me confidence in my decision to go with Sharkbite products.

Hello Barbara, You're welcome! Yeah...shut offs are a great place to start. If you are going to use Sharkbite; be sure to mark the pipe about 7/8ths of an inch on 1/2" as you want to make sure the pipe goes in the fitting the proper distance. 3/4 pipe goes in 1 and 1/8 of an inch. Hello daddy9minnich777; Thanks very much for the kind words! They do make flex supplies just for that type of installation. They are 12 and 18 inches in length I believe. They also come with or without a valve installed on the flex. No teflon is required for the application to the tank nipples. It has a garden house washer on the female end that screws directly on the thread. On the other end is a sharkbite fitting that comes in 1/2 or 3/4 depending on the pipe feeding the tank. Hello GalaXy808; If I was tackling that job myself; I would solder a 2" ball valve in the line to replace the gate. This is on domestic water of course. I only install ball valves on domestic water system. A gate valve should never be used. In certain places where the water cannot be turned off completely; a sharkbite works like a top. Hello Keith; They are very impressive! The test at the end of this video certainly proves that they take a serious bite. I also used 2 --1 1/4 couplings and attached 2 motors for another test and they didn't budge. The biggest thing is to make sure they go on all the way. That is why I recommend placing a mark on the pipe before making the connection. I have used them in a number of places where water was an issue as big as 2" in size. Earlier this week I pulled into my local plumbing supply house and a Shark Bite truck was in parked in front of it. As I walked in to the store, I was asked if I knew anything about Shank Bite.... Before the factory salesman had a chance to finish his sentence.... Hello Joe; I am not sure if he knows who I am, but thanks for the plug! I had doubts with them when I first started, but after doing several tests such as the one in this video, I am becoming a big fan! An older gentleman I know who has been at the trade about 10 more years then I have which puts him around 45 years at it; recently did an entire house using Sharkbite. It was what the customer requested. He said it was the quickest installation he ever did. The fittings are a little pricey, but time is about 1/20th compared to copper. Simply cut and push. They are the perfect fitting for a quick fix! Been there with work comes first! All tradesman seem to put there own place on the shelf. Hanging off the 1/2" pipe with that much wait on them is simply amazing! The biggest thing is to make sure the fitting is on all the way. A simple mark on the pipe is the best way to go. I thought it really shows how well sharkbite fittings bite into the pipe. Using more then one in the test and different types of pipe makes me much more confident in them. I have read a number of bashers who have stated that they heard of a fitting that has blown off of a pipe, but as you can see if the fitting is correctly installed, the chances of it blowing off are slim to none. I believe I had 275 in weight on the end if I recall correctly. I am becoming a bigger fan of these then I was when I was introduced to them a number of years ago. Ideal for a quick fix. I'm not a plumber but these sharkbites are awesome , I did a tankless water heater install and a outdoor water valve and didn't leak a drop! I'm a local 3 electrician work in NYC , I asked a couple of fitters there opinion on sharkbite connectors they told me there going to take over, buildings don't want the gas in there buildings and a possible chance of a fire , especially hotels when they renovate and they have occupied floors.

Hello Al: I have enjoyed your plumbing videos and they are tremendous help for us DIYers. Thank you for taking the time and putting a great effort. I am in the process of redoing my shower stall which includes installing a new diverter valve, a thermostatic valve ,one fixed and one handheld shower heads. All the existing pipe is copper. Once I finish the plumbing works, walls will be tiled and plumbing will not be able to be accessed without major re-work (wall demolish). What would you recommend: Old fashion soldering or using "sharkbite" fittings. Sharkbite seems so easy to utilize but I am concerned of a potential of leak in the future due to o-rings. Hello Randy; When Sharkbite first came out; I was a little hesitant. After performing many tests with them; I am becoming a fan of them and have put a lot of trust in the product. I was the same way when I was introduced to pex, but have become a huge fan. The biggest thing about pex is to keep it out of direct sunlight or flourescent lights as the rays will break the pipe down. Saw it first hand a few times now. I HAVE HAD good luck with shark bite fittings... how ever one draw back I have seen is when they are used on a back flow device (for lawn sprinkler system) if you use two ( one on inlet and 1 one out let pipe)then the back flow device can move all over the place... but they get the job done
Hello spelunkerd; The fittings do take a serious bite for sure. I believe that the plastic pipe (pex ) will be around for many years to come and will only get better. It has been used for more then 3 decades in North America in heating systems. It was invented in the 50's and improved upon in the 60's. Yikes Al ! a 2 inch shark bite ! I was expecting the vertical test but not a trapeze act , impressive Al ! My water pressure pump is still holding 90 PSI with these ( been 1 year or so ) not problem .An sure did get the shark bite other tools. JD

Hey Robert; I have been reading a number of articles from people who have heard about the fittings blowing off. I thought I would show just what kind of a bite the fittings do make. I new they would dig into pex pipe well, but was very surprised by the hold on the copper as well! I believe that if they are installed properly there is no worries of them blowing off! I don't like them in terms of permanent repairs/installs but I can tell you they will hold a lot of pressure! About 5 years ago, Someone who isn't me once accidentally cut into a high pressure oxygen pipe (with a tubing cutter thank god) that was live. He slammed a sharkbite valve on there and shut it off. To this day, it is still holding as far as I know. I don't know how much pressure was on that pipe but it was a lot.
Hello 71dembones, They do take a great bite! If you saw the end of the video; there was about 275 pounds hanging on the end of those pieces of pipe joined together by sharkbite couplings. The more weight that was added; the deeper the bite. I was sort of thinking that it may have slid off on the copper, but dug in that much more. I thought it was an impressive test. Biggest thing is the installation. I always mark the pipe pipe the depth that it is going into the fitting. sometimes at the half way point, it feels like the fitting is on, but isn't. I believe this would be the only reason for them to ever pop off. As far as how long they are going to last; only time will tell, but they are well built. Thanks for commenting and enjoy your week! After watching this video I realized that the weight of these fittings will make them great for scraping. I sometimes buy the whole stores inventory of these fittings just so people can’t use them. Then I scrap them because they are hot garbage. You’re welcome!

I know some people consider these fittings garbage, but for a homeowner who needs to make a repair and can't afford a plumber can get the job done with them. Hello jeff, I thought if I am going to use these I should prove to myself that they are a descent product. I was very reluctant to use them at first. Wouldn't go near them. I read on a plumbing forum where they popped off in a few places so I thought I would see how they worked. I have cut them open, hung from them and studied them pretty good I would say. After doing the test at the end of the video I found the stainless teeth only dug in deeper as more pressure was applied. One thing I tell everyone is to mark the pipe to make sure it goes in the fitting the proper distance. There is a point at times where the fitting feels like is is on but is really not and that is about half way. This probably why people said they popped off and would never go near them; not knowing that the real reason was because it was improperly installed. In New York City we use compression fittings it's about the same price compression fittings are legal in New York City usually the plumbing code is pretty good in New York City
Hello jeff, I have used them myself with a propress. You are right as far as price goes. Sharkbite aren't cheap by any means. The Propress is exceptionally fast and ideal for water situations similar to the Sharkbite. I have used SB as big as 2 inch in size. They do work very well. Great for someone who wants to do a quick fix. A friend of mine who has been in the trade for nearly fifty years did an entire home with Sharkbite and has had no issues. The Homeowner actually wanted it which was different. The juror is still out on how long they will last, but they have been around for a number of decades with good success. Hello YourHuntingBuddy; They do not make a sharkbite fitting that will fit over brass pipe, but they do make male and female adaptors that thread onto brass and you can just push the copper or pex into the fitting. The biggest thing to remember when installing these fittings is to place a mark on the pipe to ensure it has gone into the fittings the full and proper distance. 1/2" pipe goes in 7/8ths of an inch. 3/4" pipe goes in 1 and 1/8th of an inch. Also check for burrs on the pipe. If any are present file them off before installing the fitting. This will prevent the o-ring from getting any kind of a cut or scratch in it. Hope this helps! First off, love the videos, been learning a lot and I have watched a dozen so far. The thing about the shark bites that worries me is the longevity of the O-ring that seals inside the shark bite fitting. As an auto technician, I've seen plenty of O-rings in A/C and cooling systems start to fail at the 8 to 10 year mark. They are usually cracked, dried out and/or flat. Albeit the temperature ranges are a lot wider in an auto application. Your thoughts? Thanks!

I have seen them in a place for 5 years now with 70 pounds pressure with no issues. I know what you are saying about the life expectancy of the o-ring. They have been around for a few decades before they made their way to North America and I figure if they have survived this long; they have something going good for them. I believe only time will be the true judge of them; but they are living up to what they say so far. They recommend them for underground as well. Hey Al, I'm very unhappy with the Sharkbite Slipball 1/2" valve (model 24735LF) that I purchased. I'm trying to add a shutoff valves in the crawlspace for my shower. I'm connecting CPVC to PEX, and the support desk told me that this valve will do the job. The long slip end is supposed to slide over the CPVC, from what I was told. However, the instructions on the packaging state that it's for copper only. I revisited the Sharkbite website and here is what it says, " The SharkBite connections allows the user to connect the ball valves to copper tubing, CPVC and PEX in seconds with relative ease." So I went ahead and tried to install one valve to the hot water line. I got a nice clean cut on the CPVC by using the "Rigid 1/2" close quarters tubing cutter." I then sanded off the sharp edge around the pipe. I used the measuring tool and marked the PEX accordingly. I got it on only by struggling to slide it over the CPVC. Because I had to struggle to slide it on, I tried getting it off with the demount clip, but to no avail. It is working, but I may take it off and replace it with another PEX valve. Do you have another recommendation? Thanks.
Hello brotherjoeradosti; It should not have been that difficult to install. One thing that could have happened to you is the cutters could have flared the end of the CPVC pipe more then it looks. This can happen with copper cutters on CPVC. They have to be dial in very slowly to prevent the pipe from flaring out. I will check into this for you and get back to you in the next few days! TheOldkid888 Hey Al, I think I found the problem. The CPVC pipe in my crawlspace had a lot of dust on it. When I put the valve on the cold water line, I cleaned the pipe off with soap and water. Then I rinsed it again with cold water before I dried it off and put the SharkBite slip ball valve on. It went on much easier. They are both working fine.

Hello Jeff, Totally agree. Installation is very important. I have mentioned many times that the pipe should be marked and pushed in the full distance. Making certain there are no burrs on the pipe is very important also. I wouldn't use them inside a wall myself. I have done a number of tests on them with great results. They do make flex supplies just for that type of installation. They are 12 and 18 inches in length I believe.
They also come with or without a valve installed on the flex. No teflon is required for the application to the tank nipples.
It has a garden house washer on the female end that screws directly on the thread.
On the other end is a sharkbite fitting that comes in 1/2 or 3/4 depending on the pipe feeding the tank.
I am seeing several of these fittings being used and they work very well from what I am finding.

If I was tackling that job myself; I would solder a 2" ball valve in the line to replace the gate. This is on domestic water of course. I only install ball valves on domestic water system.
A gate valve should never be used.
In certain places where the water cannot be turned off completely; a sharkbite works like a top. A little pricey, but they do work very well.

They are very impressive! The test at the end of this video certainly proves that they take a serious bite.
I also used 2 --1 1/4 couplings and attached 2 motors for another test and they didn't budge. The biggest thing is to make sure they go on all the way. That is why I recommend placing a mark on the pipe before making the connection.
I have used them in a number of places where water was an issue as big as 2" in size.
They are a little costly, but are very easy to install.

Earlier this week I pulled into my local plumbing supply house and a Shark Bite truck was in parked in front of it.
As I walked in to the store, I was asked if I knew anything about Shank Bite....

I had doubts with them when I first started, but after doing several tests such as the one in this video, I am becoming a big fan!
An older gentleman I know who has been at the trade about 10 more years then I have which puts him around 45 years at it; recently did an entire house using Sharkbite. It was what the customer requested. He said it was the quickest
installation he ever did. The fittings are a little pricey, but time is about 1/20th compared to copper. Simply cut and push.
They are the perfect fitting for a quick fix!
Been there with work comes first! All tradesman seem to put there own place on the shelf.

I was skeptical about them myself, but I have done a number of tests on them now and have a great deal of confidence in them. Hanging off the 1/2" pipe with that much wait on them is simply amazing! The biggest thing is to make sure the fitting is on all the way. A simple mark on the pipe is the best way to go.

The video is a little long and I am not sure if many people actually watch the entire video, but the weight test is pretty neat. I thought it really shows how well sharkbite fittings bite into the pipe. Using more then one in the test and different types of pipe makes me much more confident in them.
I have read a number of bashers who have stated that they heard of a fitting that has blown off of a pipe, but as you can see if the fitting is correctly installed, the chances of it blowing off are slim to none. I believe I had 275 in weight on the end if I recall correctly.
I am becoming a bigger fan of these then I was when I was introduced to them a number of years ago. Ideal for a quick fix.

I'm not a plumber but these sharkbites are awesome , I did a tankless water heater install and a outdoor water valve and didn't leak a drop! I'm a local 3 electrician work in NYC , I asked a couple of fitters there opinion on sharkbite connectors they told me there going to take over, buildings don't want the gas in there buildings and a possible chance of a fire , especially hotels when they renovate and they have occupied floors.

It was something like pex when it first came out; I was a little hesitant, but it proved itself to me very quickly.
They have been around for a few decades now and have proved themselves as well.

I am in the process of redoing my shower stall which includes installing a new diverter valve, a thermostatic valve ,one fixed and one handheld shower heads. All the existing pipe is copper. Once I finish the plumbing works, walls will be tiled and plumbing will not be able to be accessed without major re-work (wall demolish).
What would you recommend: Old fashion soldering or using "sharkbite" fittings.
Sharkbite seems so easy to utilize but I am concerned of a potential of leak in the future due to o-rings.

When Sharkbite first came out; I was a little hesitant. After performing many tests with them; I am becoming a fan of them and have put a lot of trust in the product.
I was the same way when I was introduced to pex, but have become a huge fan. The biggest thing about pex is to keep it out of direct sunlight or flourescent lights as the rays will break the pipe down. Saw it first hand a few times now.

I HAVE HAD good luck with shark bite fittings... how ever one draw back I have seen is when they are used on a back flow device (for lawn sprinkler system) if you use two ( one on inlet and 1 one out let pipe)then the back flow device can move all over the place... but they get the job done

The fittings do take a serious bite for sure. I believe that the plastic pipe (pex ) will be around for many years to come and will only get better. It has been used for more then 3 decades in North America in heating systems.
It was invented in the 50's and improved upon in the 60's. I have been using it on waterlines for quite a period of time, although hesitant at first; wouldn't give it up now. Zero problems so far!

I don't have any doubt that these fittings work well initially. But in a generation, when the plastic becomes brittle, I wonder how popular plastic pipe will be.

I have been reading a number of articles from people who have heard about the fittings blowing off. I thought I would show just what kind of a bite the fittings do make. I new they would dig into pex pipe well, but was very surprised by the hold on the copper as well! I believe that if they are installed properly there is no worries of them blowing off! As you can see the 1/2" can withstand a large amount of weight!

I don't like them in terms of permanent repairs/installs but I can tell you they will hold a lot of pressure! About 5 years ago, Someone who isn't me once accidentally cut into a high pressure oxygen pipe (with a tubing cutter thank god) that was live. He slammed a sharkbite valve on there and shut it off. To this day, it is still holding as far as I know. I don't know how much pressure was on that pipe but it was a lot.

They do take a great bite! If you saw the end of the video; there was about 275 pounds hanging on the end of those pieces of pipe joined together by sharkbite couplings. The more weight that was added; the deeper the bite. I was sort of thinking that it may have slid off on the copper, but dug in that much more. I thought it was an impressive test.
Biggest thing is the installation. I always mark the pipe pipe the depth that it is going into the fitting. sometimes at the half way point, it feels like the fitting is on, but isn't. I believe this would be the only reason for them to ever pop off.
As far as how long they are going to last; only time will tell, but they are well built.

After watching this video I realized that the weight of these fittings will make them great for scraping. I sometimes buy the whole stores inventory of these fittings just so people can’t use them. Then I scrap them because they are hot garbage. You’re welcome!

I know some people consider these fittings garbage, but for a homeowner who needs to make a repair and can't afford a plumber can get the job done with them.

I thought if I am going to use these I should prove to myself that they are a descent product. I was very reluctant to use them at first. Wouldn't go near them. I read on a plumbing forum where they popped off in a few places so I thought I would see how they worked.
I have cut them open, hung from them and studied them pretty good I would say.
After doing the test at the end of the video I found the stainless teeth only dug in deeper as more pressure was applied.
One thing I tell everyone is to mark the pipe to make sure it goes in the fitting the proper distance. There is a point at times where the fitting feels like is is on but is really not and that is about half way. This probably why people said they popped off and would never go near them; not knowing that the real reason was because it was improperly installed. That little mark on the pipe makes all the difference in the world.
My father was a plumber as well.

In New York City we use compression fittings it's about the same price compression fittings are legal in New York City usually the plumbing code is pretty good in New York City

I have used them myself with a propress. You are right as far as price goes. Sharkbite aren't cheap by any means. The Propress is exceptionally fast and ideal for water situations similar to the Sharkbite. I have used SB as big as 2 inch in size. They do work very well. Great for someone who wants to do a quick fix. A friend of mine who has been in the trade for nearly fifty years did an entire home with
Sharkbite and has had no issues. The Homeowner actually wanted it which was different. The juror is still out on how long they will last, but they have been around for a number of decades with good success. Hopefully it will continue.

They do not make a sharkbite fitting that will fit over brass pipe, but they do make male and female adaptors that thread onto brass and you can just push the copper or pex into the fitting. They work very well!

The biggest thing to remember when installing these fittings is to place a mark on the pipe to ensure it has gone into the fittings the full and proper distance. 1/2" pipe goes in 7/8ths of an inch. 3/4" pipe goes in 1 and 1/8th of an inch.
Also check for burrs on the pipe. If any are present file them off before installing the fitting. This will prevent the o-ring from getting any kind of a cut or scratch in it.

First off, love the videos, been learning a lot and I have watched a dozen so far. The thing about the shark bites that worries me is the longevity of the O-ring that seals inside the shark bite fitting. As an auto technician, I've seen plenty of O-rings in A/C and cooling systems start to fail at the 8 to 10 year mark. They are usually cracked, dried out and/or flat. Albeit the temperature ranges are a lot wider in an auto application. Your thoughts? Thanks!

I believe these are an excellent product as far as a quick fix goes. I have seen them in a place for 5 years now with 70 pounds pressure with no issues. I know what you are saying about the life expectancy of the o-ring. They have been around for a few decades before they made their way to North America and I figure if they have survived this long; they have something going good for them.
I believe only time will be the true judge of them; but they are living up to what they say so far.
They recommend them for underground as well. I would not be a fan of that myself, but I was not a fan of pex when it first arrived either. Now it is the go to thing.

I think the wide range in temperature would be an issue. They are an excellent product that I have done several tests on. I have installed a number of different size fittings and am more then pleased with the results.
Just don't think they would cut the automobile world yet.

That is exactly right! If you do not have enough pipe to go into the fitting the proper distance; then you must look at a different approach by using another few fittings to get the job done.
The pipe MUST go into the fitting the proper depth. If it has to go in 11/4"; then 3/4" is not deep enough. You do NOT want a fitting blowing off when you are not home.

Hey Al, I'm very unhappy with the Sharkbite Slipball 1/2" valve (model 24735LF) that I purchased. I'm trying to add a shutoff valves in the crawlspace for my shower. I'm connecting CPVC to PEX, and the support desk told me that this valve will do the job. The long slip end is supposed to slide over the CPVC, from what I was told. However, the instructions on the packaging state that it's for copper only. I revisited the Sharkbite website and here is what it says, " The SharkBite connections allows the user to connect the ball valves to copper tubing, CPVC and PEX in seconds with relative ease." So I went ahead and tried to install one valve to the hot water line. I got a nice clean cut on the CPVC by using the "Rigid 1/2" close quarters tubing cutter." I then sanded off the sharp edge around the pipe. I used the measuring tool and marked the PEX accordingly. I got it on only by struggling to slide it over the CPVC. Because I had to struggle to slide it on, I tried getting it off with the demount clip, but to no avail. It is working, but I may take it off and replace it with another PEX valve. Do you have another recommendation? Thanks.

It should not have been that difficult to install. One thing that could have happened to you is the cutters could have flared the end of the CPVC pipe more then it looks. This can happen with copper cutters on CPVC. They have to be dial in very slowly to prevent the pipe from flaring out.

TheOldkid888 Hey Al, I think I found the problem. The CPVC pipe in my crawlspace had a lot of dust on it. When I put the valve on the cold water line, I cleaned the pipe off with soap and water. Then I rinsed it again with cold water before I dried it off and put the SharkBite slip ball valve on. It went on much easier. They are both working fine.
How will these fittings hold up underground? Do you use different fittings for underground water supply?

You should have no issues using that valve for the job!
No worries of freezing that's for sure.
Big thing to rmemeber is to mark the pipe the distance that the fitting will slide on.
1/2" goes on 7/8ths of an inch.
3/4 goes on 1-1/8th of an inch.
I use a marker for this myself.

If you come across a situation where constant water flow is an issue and you can't get a fitting soldered do to the water; they are great for that kind of scenario. I have come across a few of these in the past as you may have yourself!

If you use the name brand Sharkbite and most importantly install them correctly they are not all that bad. I still wouldn't use them in a wall.

Totally agree. Installation is very important. I have mentioned many times that the pipe should be marked and pushed in the full distance. Making certain there are no burrs on the pipe is very important also.

There not good, in the long run you will regret it. Seals in the valve deteriorate especially if you have hard water.
