Parallel compression is a tried and true technique for giving our rock drums impact and character, but does the same apply for program drums like loops and samples? In this video I demonstrate three techniques for kicking life into your drums! This works for Hip Hop, Pop, Afro, Reggaeton, and any genre where our drums are primarily programed. Bonus tip at the end!
I had that API 2500 Compressor in my Pro Tools plug in folder for a long time but never used it. I stuck with the stock PT compressor.
Then I put the API on some drums because I wasn’t happy with the stock compressor I was using and the sound became so alive that I started using the API more often.
Hey Matthew, that shirt you’re wearing might “T” some folks off !!! See what I did there ?!?! 😃
Your tutorial videos are the best !!! 👍🏾
There is one more parallel reality related to the topic but I’m not into revealing it really! 😂
Anyway…now I will watch the video because one can always learned something from you no matter on which level I am! 🤓
Thanks for another cool video. I did something very like this technique in a recent mix I did and was delighted with how it worked out. I'd felt that the last section of the track was OK but lacking and by adding in a little bit of distortion on the drums, not enough too really hear but definitely feel it kept the interest going in that section of the track whereas without it it just felt flat and samey. It is fascinating how small differences can change the feel and bring life to a track.
This one is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The SSL X Valve compressor is really nice for parallel compression too. I use parallel on kicks and snares that have very little attack to give it punch
Love the shirt!
It is Shirt!
Standing ovation sir!
Thankya
Sta level promo game strong 💪🏻
Great, musical options here.
Love parallel. Its fashionable nowadays but allows for a lot of creativity though. However in this particular example, I think you probably could have just used either an in line transient designer (or parallel) for similar effect
Btw would you make a review of Arturia plugins? FX bundle I mean... eqs and compressors are on my mind.
I have their Plate reverb which is decent. Id need more experience w their stuff.
@@WeissAdvice Very nice reverb .. Im used to uad emt plate but somehow I like that Arturia better.
Im generally used to UAD plugins...LA2A and 1176 are seriously my fava but I wat to use some emulation of famous DBX compressor and maybe some other features that Arturia plugins have...I could not get used to Arturia1176 really. Arturia Neve compressor is cool, STA - no idea how to treat it...maybe as alternative to LA2A. Generally I HAVE NO experience with analog equipment other then guitar pedals...so it would be cool to hear pro's perspective on Arturia plugins!
Anyone notice that some of these analog compressor emulations can shift the phase in weird ways?
I think what I struggle with is understanding when parallel processing is needed or not. I feel like it sounds good on everything lol but I know it's not needed on everything. Or is it?! lol
“Needed” is always a little precarious. There are some mixers who really juice their compressors and do a lot of parallel work, there are some mixers who barely do it at all. I tend to use it when I feel I need to kick a little life into something. Maybe your style is to do a lot of parallel processing - nothing wrong with that at all!
@@WeissAdvice Love this view. I have been mixing professionally for a bit now and I never really got into parallel processing until I met Dynone3 about a year or two ago. Hence why when you made this video I knew I had to come get your view on it. I appreciate the response. Would you ever be open to making a video or explaining in depth how you would collect royalties / master rights (a point) for being a mix engineer? I don't know what contracts to really aim for this and I have been mainly compensated for the projects up front but nothing ever on the backend so far. Now that I am working with some bigger artists, I would love to gain some more insight on this if you have any on a more detailed level. What contracts to apply, how to approach the client, what should be in the contract maybe? I know you aren't a lawyer lol but any guidance you'd have, it would be much appreciated. If not a video, even a call would be welcome if you offer that kind of thing.
