Definitely. When I saw that emotion I realised it's exactly what separates him from all those who don't make it. That's the drive right there he used to succeed. Failure wasn't an option. I realise as I get older that what separates those who reach truly great heights in any game, sport, occupation simply dedicate everything to that cause or goal, they simply don't take no for an answer. It's the same thing that makes highly successful business people and entrepreneurs, many have had many failures before they made it big, they just have such grit and determination and are relentless in the pursuit of their goals.

Excellent video and interview. I’ve always liked Andrew. I remember years ago when I watched him featured in, From Busto To Robusto, which was a little documentary about his poker lifestyle. He’s certainly grown inside and out since then. When he choked up a little during this interview I got a little chill because I feel the same way as he felt back then and I’m sure the majority of other poker players understand that emotion too. Much respect to Robl

I remember watching a short interview with Robl where he shared a story about how his Dad called him up, made him come home from the casino, and brought him to his school's guidance counsellor to explain why he's dropping out of college. When Robl said "I'm dropping out to become a professional poker player," the counsellor said "I'm so sorry" to Robl's father. Great to see him shove that apology in their face.

Far from perfect, but WAY better than most interviewers out there who are absolutely garbage and talk over their subjects. Lee Davy is one of the few interviewers that aren't garbage and if he works on his craft he could be top notch. The most obvious area where he could improve is making his questions more concise and articulating them succinctly first time, instead of saying something and then having to waste time qualifying it or contextualizing what he just said. Overall he's a good dude though, we need more of him. He's a breath of fresh air in a world of interviewers who are dog shit on toast. Lee gets things out of his subjects that the vast majority of interviewers today would never even get close too. Lee should watch Dick Cavatt. I think he could learn a thing or two from such a master.

Very interesting to really get to hear about people many of us just see at a poker table. Your anecdote about your change of direction in life brilliantly allowed Andrew to speak about something naturally and you always let your interviewees speak for themselves. Andrew seems a very grounded interesting person and this series is a real delight at showing us the human aspect. Thanks to you all. ☺

I'm just past the "doubting" part and i just have to say how much i respect the openness. And the sentiments hit home for me as well (some of the same struggles). Taking an unconventional path in life with nobody really believing or understanding you is extremely hard, especially if it is a 180 degrees in the opposite direction of your family, friends, and peers. I actually feel the doubt comes full circle and you end up deeply questioning yourself. Reminds me of a great quote: "“I am not who you think I am; I am not who I think I am; I am who I think you think I am".
What it means is we often live in a perception of a perception of ourselves. The pressures surrounding that more often than not keep people from being the person they could be and from living the best version of themselves. Much respect for Robl fighting through that and being open about it.
First heard that quote here actually: ua-cam.com/video/2nzBWfjdHcI/v-deo.html
EDIT: Just got a little further and they both talk about the group and peoples perception. Wizards.
