I turned this game on with low expectations, it got lauded by reviewers sure, but a lot of games do these days and it doesn't necessarily mean anything. In the first scene of him waking up in his hotel room I had already laughed out loud multiple times and felt a certain existential sadness also, the game was not even five minutes in. 12 hours later my wife woke up and I was still playing this absolute gem. I absolutely binged this game I finished it in less than two days and cant wait to play this again.

In the official OST, this track isn't included, but a remixed version of it is, entitled "Instrument of Surrender". This music, with it mournful sound, evokes the moment the revolution was crushed, and how that moment haunts Revachol even now.

    • @snape82
      @snape82 4 роки тому +56

@@nocthurn You may know this already but can be for the benefit of others. The original version of Red Rock Riviera was from British Sea Power's soundtrack to the BBC/Arts Council film "From the Sea to the Land Beyond". ua-cam.com/video/8MqMYVCJZaA/v-deo.html
. The title of the film probably borrows from the title of their own song "The Land Beyond" from their second album, Open Season.
This itself was a re-developed version of "Cleaning out the Rooms" from their album "Valhalla Dancehall".
      ua-cam.com/video/9Psy00POSQI/v-deo.html
Also Tommy Le Homme (character outside Whirling-in-Rags) sings "I'm a gander and a hunter and a gatherer. Feel like a traveller...from another planet", which is from their song "Want to be Free" from their last album "Let the Dancers Inherit the Party" released in 2017. I know there is also a reference to "A Light Above Descending", a track from their "Machineries of Joy" album from 2013. That and there's mentions of Skuas and they have a track called "The Great Skua". Beyond that there could be much more!
I'm not even the biggest BSP fan but I've loved them since 2008 and I've seen them live twice supporting Manic Street Preachers (my real favourite band
) in Glasgow and Carlisle around 2010. I only found out they did the soundtrack to the game a few days ago so I'm just getting my teeth into the game myself. I got into the band through the rhetoric around their album "Do You Like Rock Music?" from 2008. There was an interview in which they talked about what they meant by rock music which I can't find now but I have found a comparable one with Yan in which he says "They are both life-enhancing experiences, things that makes you feel more alive. Seeing a really good performer is like having a good game of dominoes or climbing a mountain and seeing an amazing view." www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/british-sea-power-meeting-the-band-is-an-educational-experience-768152.html. The one I read at the time was more about having the hairs standing on your neck, though the word exhilaration also comes to mind.

This game does test your character, if you play it sincerely. I didn't expect half the scenarios and found myaelf scratching my head asking how i *would* respond. Most often an answer satisfyingly close to my own feelings was within reach. I learned that in the world of martinaise, i am a totally neutral moralist, and with every jab at moralism being a do-nothing "status quo" ideal, i gave a chuckle halfway between sincere amusement and lighthearted guilt. It really does give you an opportunity to look at yourself squarely through a very abstract lens.

I think this single song encapsulates this game the best. It's haunting, it's strange, almost unexpected, yet as you explore and understand, you learn that no theme could fit Revachol and Martinaise. It's by no means my favorite song- ironically, I would say it's the track that plays in the abandoned businesses, because it gives me a more tangible footing.
This song is mournful, it's ethereal, it's beautiful, but there's no feeling of grounding, no closure, the perfect theme for a city that refuses to let go of the past, no matter how painful it is. A city that mourns a future that it no longer has any right to.

THIS! This right here is why I adore video game soundtracks, especially Disco Elysium's. There's often a disconnect between the lyrics of a song and the reality of the listener. For me, regular lyrical music doesn't do it, which is why these lyricless OSTs work so well. I don't need a singer to tell me how they feel or how to feel, because the song itself is tied to the game, and therefore the player's, experience. This, in my experience, has been far more powerful at making me feel ANYTHING through musical audio.

Puked trying to look at a corpse and then got so frustrated trying to interpret a series of footprints that I told my partner to fuck himself and went to live under a bridge, throwing extrements at passers-by, declaring it a deep dive into social realism. I love this game.

For me, this part of the OST perfectly captures the sound of when the sea and the sky are the same muted color. Anybody who’s been on the water in drab weather knows what I mean - the chill in the air sometimes accompanied by a dew / mist; the isolation of looking around and everything being a shade of grey. That’s this song.

Few games and soundtracks give me that "the best friends I've ever had dont even exist," feeling. This was one of them. Between kim, hardy and all of his aggression, klassje and her constant misdirects, and most of all- idiot doom spiral, i would say its the only game wherein I've made several friends.

I disagree, and I'd even argue this game disagrees too. Because despite how much of a fuckup, messy-minded individual the protagonist is, he moves on. He lives. The same for the other characters. They are broken, but moving. Because life is for the living.

I wish I played Disco earlier. It only took me a few months to get to it, but that felt like months wasted. I wish I had a trusted reviewer that I could hear "This game has actually good writing" and believe them. I just hear it so damn much, then I play and it's yet another young adult novel turned into a game that I'm supposed to care about. I miss TotalBiscuit. I wish he could have seen Disco.

I hear the horn call to action the day the cohilition landed over Revochol. The commisars rousing the militia to action as the bourgeois airships blotted out the skies. The horn blasts with such desperation and fury and hope and terror that even long after the last soldier fell to his final resting place- its call echoes off the bullet riddled walls.
The combined hope of the defenders mingle with their horrific ends and the city falls into a meloncholic, monotonous status quo. The airships are gone. The monarch is dead. The communists lay in their graves. But still the city remains shattered and absued by the merciless gears of the capital machine. Good morning, detective. You moral intern lacky. Its time to get up and pester the people your masters stole the futures of.

oh so this is why I was confused by the music in my 2nd playthrough when I stepped out from Whirling in Rags. The music is actually different to this piece that was there on release. I knew something was off even though the Instrument of surrender is beautiful in its own way its little different to this.
