    The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
    The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
    Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
    A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
    The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

    Frank Marshall is one of the most spectacular players to watch. It's very fitting that he's remembered with an attack named after him.
    He made chess games feel like duels.

I watched a handful of your videos already and I learned a lot about the game ranging from jargons to opening names to identifying blunders and many more. I really appreciate your videos and I hope you continue to inspire more individuals like me.

    I feel it's a shame that Agadmator's language when describing checkmates has become so overly-precise because of pedantic commenters.
    His use of language is brilliant, I promise you. When he says 'there are no more checks' or 'and this is checkmate' even though there technically are more delaying moves, his language is correct. It's the listener who is wrong for not understanding what the sentence means in context.
    All meaning varies with context. I wish he'd go back to speaking stylishly in these situations, as he does naturally the rest of the time.

      Agreed. I don't really mind either way honestly, but everyone knows what he means when he says these things. It's either a person joking, or (hopefully not...) people who just have to be "right" for no reason, even if it's just technically right.

    Plot twist : Sadly, Lasker won the tournment, half a point ahead of Capablanca, who was amazing in the preliminar (leader with 8 points, while Lasker was 2nd with 6.5), but was terrible in the finals (5 points in 2nd place, while Lasker had 7), for a total of Lasker with 13.5 points, in first, and Capablanca in 3rd, half a point behind. Also, Rubinstein was eliminated in the preliminar.

    • @lvrs1
      @lvrs1 5 років тому

      @Oissev Onos After knowing about the negotiations he had for the world chess championship match with Capablanca, I find him to be an extremelly unlikeable character. A true world champion puts his title on the line in such a way that both the champion and challenger are at equal terms. All those demands he made from Capablanca were ridiculous and just showed that he wanted to win at all cost, not because he was better, but because he had the title and there was no organization to force him to defend it. But still, Lasker, Fischer and Kasparov were/are all geniouses and deserve all the respect in the world for being brilliant and helping, not only but also, the development of chess, but Capablanca, Karpov and Carlsen, for example, are much more likeable and deserve all the best due to their personalities being simply great (and seeming like gentleman that would be actually fun to hang out with)

    Capablanca's look actually said "I'm gonna rip that moustache off your face"
    But since they were all gentlemen in that era, he actually added an extra point to the negotiations list.
    "I hereby accept all your unfair and absolutely ludicruous criteria and points mentioned above for the World Titleship match but would like to add one of my own.
    If I, Jose Raul Capablance, win this match against you, you shall immediately be obligated to shave that profanity currently adorning your smug face.
    Yours truly
    Josè"

    • @aetarz
      @aetarz 5 років тому +13

      Oissev Onos The reason he said they were unfair was because the demands didn’t line up with how Lasker gained his title for example with the different time control etc.

    • @Wolf_Larsen
      @Wolf_Larsen 5 років тому +9

      @Oissev Onos I hope you're trolling. Lasker's stipulations were so ridiculous that it made me lose all respect for the man.
      They can be accurately summarized by a middle finger raised in the direction of any chess loving individual.
      Let's face it: Lasker might have been a great player. A great sportsman or person he was not.

    • @michaeltellurian825
      @michaeltellurian825 5 років тому +6

      @Oissev Onos #4 Lasker wants Capablanca to give up his part (equal) ownership of their games. That's absurd. #9 is 12 moves per hour. The standard was 15. Yes, Lasker is getting old. If it favors youth, well that's life! Imagine an aging boxer demanding 2-minute rounds instead of the normal 3-minute rounds. That would be just as absurd. I want to state also that I have been a student of Lasker for many years and he is highly respected by me. Even so, these stipulations are, in my opinion, unfair and Capablanca was justified in rejecting them.

    Just studied this game, seemed like a very instructive attacking game, especially concepts like 37. d6 and the very strong (but unplayed) 30...b4. Also it's a great game by this Tal guy, not sure if you've heard of him

    At 8.49 after Capablanca played g4, why didn't Marshall Qc1 check, leaving the King only g2. Then Qc6 check leaving Capablanca having to exchange Queens? Surely he would have won the game with the position of his king and pawns. Am I missing something?

    Coach I have a question are you close friend of Capablanca because you have 85 games of Jose Raul Capablanca? You know the history in all the games? I am curious?

    twitch plays chess vs GM simon williams.
    back when twitch plays pokemon was a trend, many other channels came up with their variation of it.
    the main gist of Twitch plays was the commands and moves came from chat.
    so when Twitch plays chess came Simon Williams offered up on the challenge and took on 6000 or so viewers.

    regarding Capablanca vs. Lasker: I think Lasker's unfair demands he presented Capa are the same he suggested Schlechter! That is the reason to why Schlechter went all out even though he was leading the match by a point!!!

    • @oleanonymus3014
      @oleanonymus3014 5 років тому

      @Oissev Onos That is pure speculation. It's plausable but maybe Schlechter had to win with a two point lead to become World champion like Capa would have had to

    • @oleanonymus3014

      @Oissev Onos Ok. Then I don't why Schlechter acted the way he did even if he felt like Lasker was the stronger player heplayed better in the match
