Wow, you are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you! Can you help me with a pair I have that I think are lates 60s-70's, here are the specs: Big E, #6 on inside of top button, V stitch at top button on waistband, Selvedge, no care instructions on pocket or any tag at all.
I've got a pair of 501's that I'm pretty sure are from 1973 based on the care tag info & the single stitching on the back pocket. I'm curious about the number on the back of the top button though..... mine has a 6. Any ideas on what that means?
Hey George! I actually have a video on that very subject titled: "The Secret code on the back of Levi's Buttons". But the short answer is that it's the factory code of where the jeans were made. The single digit would support your thesis on the age of your 501s. Awesome!
I was wondering something. I have a pair of 505's with the care tag ripped off. What I noticed is that it has (or had) only two silky flaps as opposed to another pair I have with a total of four flaps in two columns. Just wondering if you can tell the age of these. The number is 4102 or 1102 on the back of the button, and I also noticed on the back patch it has XX where my other modern pair doesn't. Plus these are way more comfortable, but don't know where they were made. Any idea?
I’m in Australia and recently purchased a pair of 501s that I think may be from the 90’s but not sure. Thet have a thicker care tag with red batwing but no note of where they were made just “licenced product of Levi Strauss & Co, USA”. Have not been able to find the same tag anywhere. Also back patch is high up on the belt line with a tear off.
Hey! If you'd like you can email me some photos and I'll take a look! lootfam1@gmail.com. So far sound to me like a typical 90s internationally made 501, but I'd have to see. Thanks!
Yes, they are generally formulated with a letter and a number like b/7. Letters are the first 12 months. A=jan, b=feb etc. The number is the last digit of the year. 7=1987, 1997 etc. You just have to use other details to determine the decade.
What if there isn’t a care tag at all, not even the printed version. They were not bought in the US tho, they were bought in Italy. The Levi’s have a lower case e.
Hi, I have a pair of 501s that were given to me by a friend in the early 2000s.I know that she got them 2nd hand but I don't know when. They were made in the UK, have a ton of numbers on the care label. The top button has the number 31 printed on it. I've watched a couple of your videos but still can't work out how old they are. Any ideas?
Hi, I have a pair of 501XX with a long white tag on inside hip. Trying to determine the year but can't make sense of any of the numbers from videos. Wondering if they are repros perhaps? WPL-423 but top botton stamped 554. Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
I have a couple pair that I've got questions about . Please help me! I can not wrap my brain around it all. Your videos are the only ones that make any sense to me but I still have some questions
Hi, I have a quick question for you. i bought a pr of used Levi's 501 Jeans Men's W32 L34 Button Fly Red R Tab, Small E. Most of care tag has been cut out. Number on back of button: 3757? Can't be sure because it is a little worn off. I believe that number stands for Factory Code Egypt. I feel like you would know how old these jeans are. Any help would be appreciated. TIA
@@LootFam Oh also, what was left of the care tag was thick white cloth,.not ribbon, although the inside Levis tag was satiny with only Levi's & 2 numbers above on it. And thx so much for the reply. I subbed!
I have a pair of 501 big E With a card stock label Care tag is printed on the pocket with NO hanging care tag but the number on the inner button says 556?? Please help
I just got a levis at the thrift store but I am not sure what is the age.. I can see at the back of the tab located on the left inside pocket a code says "078"
So my levis has copper rivets on the left front pocket and for the red tag it just has the r on it and the pocket says for over 123 with the washing instructions on it and right by the pocket has 2 tags on the stitching one that says levis with a bat wing and one that has numbers on it L5155 and 537303 . it's a button fly and on the first button it has 4032 and the rest don't have any numbers on it could you try to tell me the age because I know nothing about jeans and could use a little help thanks
I have addressed care tag eras in other video but the 501 tends to have it's own rules as well as care tags that it doesn't share with other models. I think it would be helpful If i did a video on just the care tags. I'll put that in the queue. Thanks! If you have a particular tag you need help with send me a pictures at lootfam1@gmail.com and I'd love to help!
Thanks for the great videos, Iam still stumped with my jeans. They are big E printed only on one side. There is not a care label at all, and the top button has the number 2 on it. I have had them for at least 35 years, and they were old when I got them, given to me by a friend. They are 501 waist 34 and length 30, and selvedge denim. I always wore them they were big and couldn’t wear them without a belt. Needless to say I now don’t need the belt anymore. I was thinking about selling them but not sure what they are worth. The prices vary so much. Thank you in advance hopefully you may have some idea what they are worth.
Hey, I love your videos and I watch each of them a couple of times, to understand every bit, because english is not my natural language. Here I didn’t get that thing with the leather back patches, could someone please help me out? Before 1935: leather, 1935-1962: card, after 1962: ? Any deeper info on that would be highly appreciated!
I think I have a pair of 501s from the 80s-90s (according to your care tag video). I love them they fit so good I have completely worn them out but nothing fits like they do. How can I find the same fit?! I don't even know if they're 501 bc they honestly don't look like other 501s :(
@@LootFam wait they also have a three digit code on the back button. Now I’m confused and they don’t look fake at all. The stamp is on the right pocket and the card tag is on the left inseam
Hey loot I have a pair of 501s with a leather patch & big E but it has like the modern amount of care tags on it, like the scrolls you were talking about. Do you think it’s a line from the new vintage reproduction? Also it had 4 numbers on the front top button. Thanks again!
They did! Generally, it's probably gonna be part of the Levi's economy comfort line that was sold in Kmart and Walmart from the late 80s into the late 90s. Not generally desirable. If you wanna confirm you can shoot me some photos to lootfam1@gmail.com. Thanks!
If it has a tag it's post 1969 I believe. Prior to 1969 wash instructions were printed on the pocket bag inside the jeans. So, based only on the info you provided, I'd guess they are 501s from 1969-1977. The numbers on the back of the top button can often get worn away from being rubbed. Shoot me some pics of the jeans at lootfam1@gmail.com. I'm curious!
The marks on the backs of the button are factory codes, at least for most of the stamps. Using that code you can determine the factory and if you know the production history of that factory you can get a general idea of age. Past the late 60s this method isn’t the most efficient way to tell age. Before that time period it may be very helpful.

Generally, the more tags the younger the pair. Xx also meant shrink to fit and would have ended out in the early 00s.
